African Prince Mamuwalde (William Marshall), having been bitten and entombed by Dracula two centuries ago, is released from his coffin when two antique dealers purchase items from Dracula's castle and bring them to Los Angeles. After slaking his thirst on the hapless dealers, Blacula goes in search of his wife Luva, who has reincarnated as Tina Williams (Vonetta McGee). Meanwhile, a lot of blood-drained bodies are showing up around L.A., and city pathologist Dr Gordon Thomas (Thalmus Rasulala) suspects that it might be the work of a vampire.
Blacula is based on a screenplay co-written by Raymond Koenig and Joan Torres, both of whom also wrote the screenplay for the sequel, Scream Blacula Scream (1973) (1973).
As if in a trance, Tina is led to the basement of a chemical company where Mamuwalde has moved his coffin. The police follow her, with orders not to shoot, but one of them fires off a shot, hitting Tina. Mamuwalde kills him and, as Tina lays dying, he bites her in order to turn her. He then goes after the other policement, killing them one by one. In another part of the basement, Gordon, Michelle (Denise Nicholas) and Lt Jack Peters (Gordon Pinsent) have located Mamuwalde's coffin. They slowly lift the lid and Jack quickly plunges a stake through the heart of the body lying there, only to find that it is Tina, not Mamuwalde. Mamuwalde suddenly appears. When he sees what's been done to Tina, he kisses her hand then turns to Gordon and Jack. Gordon begins to pull out a crucifix, but Mamuwalde assures him that there's no need for it. He turns away from them and begins climbing up the stairs leading to the roof. The sun has come up, and Mamuwalde gets weaker and weaker as he mounts the stairs. Once on the roof, he collapses. By the time Gordon and Jack reach him, his body has already started to disintegrate.
