Now that they’ve set the year’s best film for a December 10 debut, the Criterion Channel have unveiled the rest of next month’s selection. John Waters’ films are inseparable from John Waters’ presence, making fitting Criterion’s decision to pair an eight-film retrospective (Multiple Maniacs to Cecil B. Demented) with his own “Adventures in Moviegoing” wherein the director extols virtues of Bergman, Chabrol, Barbara Loden, and Samuel Fuller. His own Polyester will have a Criterion Edition alongside the Bob Dylan doc Don’t Look Back, an iconic film in its own right and, I think, fitting companion to The Unknown with Lon Chaney, also streaming on Criterion. No Country for Old Men and Election receive likewise treatment; the latter appears in “MTV Productions,” a series featuring Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, The Original Kings of Comedy, and (coming close to Freddy Got Fingered for least-expected 2024 addition) Jackass: the Movie.

With a list of new bosses to take down in Shadow of the Erdtree, learning how to defeat Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, is essential to completing the Elden Ring expansion. Frenzy was one of the many primordial forces in the base game, and the player could even choose to have it become the dominant order at the end.
Miyazaki has already stated that the events that occur in Shadow of the Erdtree will have no direct bearing on the story of the base game. Lore enthusiasts have a lot more to ponder over with the release of the expansion, and Midra has given us a better understanding of how the Flame of Frenzy operates within the world.

When putting together a list of the 25 Best Alfred Hitchcock Movies, it’s like plunging into a spectacular alternate universe of wit, verve, and style. The director of “Rear Window,” “Vertigo,” “North by Northwest,” and “Psycho” has a body of work so deep there are endless ways you can parse it: Maybe you could focus on his obsession with mothers, his approach to time, or the way food and painting pop up throughout his films.
But on a basic level, you also run into a challenge with Hitchcock you face with few other filmmakers, full-stop: The Master of Suspense is one of the rare directors to have a filmography with both the volume and the quality to credibly field a Top 25. With what other filmmakers can you do that? John Ford, certainly (Ford had the most films in our recent list of the 100 Greatest Westerns). Godard or Fassbinder perhaps? They...

The master of suspense is finally getting a 4K restoration for his final film.
Alfred Hitchcock’s “Frenzy,” which was also his sole R-rated feature, is being released at the Film Forum to celebrate its restoration. “Frenzy” stars Jon Finch, Barbara Leigh-Hunt, and Barry Foster; the feature is an adaptation of novel “Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square,” released by Arthur La Bern in 1966. “Sleuth” playwright Anthony Shaffer adapted the book for Hitchcock’s 1972 film, which was Hitchcock’s second to last feature.
“Frenzy” follows a down-on-his-luck ex-Royal Air Force officer (Finch) who is on the run amid accusations of being The Necktie Strangler after his ex-wife is found dead. “Frenzy” is billed as Hitchcock’s penultimate film, and his first feature made in London after thirty years.
The official logline teases that “Frenzy” is Hitchcock’s “return to fiendish form and his most salacious, sordid picture.”

"The Wicker Man" is the gold standard of occult horror. Police Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward), a God-fearing Englishman, arrives on the island of Summerisle to investigate the reported disappearance of a young girl. Howie soon discovers the islanders are pagans and spends the movie angrily berating them. Soon, it becomes clear the cultural differences are more sinister than the proper way to worship.
The islanders' crops are failing, so Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) has plotted a virgin sacrifice to appease their gods. No one ever said the virgin had to be a young girl; no, it's the unmarried Howie, who is burned to death in an excruciating sequence as the Summerisle villagers sing.
Despite being underserved by producer/distributor British Lion Films (to the point where Lee had to promote the film on his own time), "The Wicker Man" is now regarded as a horror classic. 2023 was the 50th anniversary of "The Wicker Man,...

1960 was a year that sent shockwaves throughout the film industry. Alfred Hitchcock, who was to direct Anna Massey twelve years later in his lurid thriller Frenzy – about a serial killer in central London – opened a movie called Psycho. Psycho was significant in several regards. Hitchcock refused to show the film to critics and barred his two leads, Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh, from doing any promotional interviews as he wanted total control over the film’s publicity and its content. This was in June of 1960. Two months earlier another celebrated filmmaker had released an equally shocking film called Peeping Tom and whose critical reception ruined both the movie and the reputation of its director, Michael Powell. Hitchcock wanted audiences to judge Psycho for themselves. Most audiences never got a chance to evaluate Peeping Tom.
Both films were about serial killers and both showed the murderer as a self-effacing,...

David Tennant and Catherine Tate express their delight at Bernard Cribbins' posthumous return for Doctor Who's 60th anniversary special. Cribbins had a significant impact on the show and his character meant a lot to many people. Cribbins had a long and impressive career, and his portrayal of Wilfred Mott was a beloved part of Doctor Who's legacy.
David Tennant and Catherine Tate pay tribute to Bernard Cribbins after his posthumous appearance in Doctor Who's 60th anniversary special, "Wild Blue Yonder." In the special, Cribbins briefly reprises his role as Wilfred Mott, the grandfather of Donna Noble (Tate) and longtime friend of the Doctor (Tennant). Sadly, Cribbins passed away on July 27, 2022, making his return as Mott his final TV appearance. He first began portraying the character in 2007 alongside Tennant's Doctor, which adds an emotional layer to their 60th anniversary reunion.

It's easy to take for granted the weirdness and shocking nature of the extraterrestrial's lifecycle in Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 horror film "Alien."
In "Alien," John Hurt plays Kane, a crew member of the futuristic space tug Nostromo who finds an outsize, leathery egg while exploring a mysterious alien vessel. The egg opens, and a strange monster -- part lobster, part bladder -- leaps out and grabs his face. He immediately goes comatose. Later, it is discovered that the monster, while still attached to his face, has inserted an unsettling biological tube down his throat. Kane's crewmates are unable to remove the monster from his face; when they pull on it, it begins to strangle Kane with its tail, and when they cut it, it bleeds acid that can eat through metal.
After a spell, the monster drops off Kane's face of its own volition and dies. What happened? It's...

James Hamilton has lived an envious life. As staff photographer at Crawdaddy, The New York Herald, Harper’s Bazaar, The Village Voice, and The New York Observer, Hamilton chronicled the faces of New York culture, from Meryl Streep and Liza Minnelli to Jean-Luc Godard and Wes Anderson. One balmy night in 1980, I witnessed Hamilton shooting the iconic photo of Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken in John Carpenter’s “Escape from New York,” standing under the Statue of Liberty.
During the pandemic Hamilton began posting his gorgeous black-and-white photographs on his Facebook page on the celebrity’s birthday. He’s now in the habit. “Every day, it seems there’s someone I’ve photographed,” he said. And he owns his own photos. After he saw the art department at Harper’s Bazaar throwing out negatives, he possessively held his work close. He would happily stay up late at night inhaling photo-chemicals...

A classic film that not only endures but continues to inspire half a century later is a true marvel. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, The Wicker Man helped popularize the folk horror genre that continues to flourish with the likes of Midsommar, The Witch, and The Ritual. Its impact extends beyond cinema, from inspiring Radiohead (“Burn the Witch”) and Iron Maiden (“The Wicker Man”) songs to being included in the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.
In the film, Sergeant Neil Howie travels from the mainland to the Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. The devout Christian is appalled to learn that the islanders practice a form of paganism characterized by blasphemous beliefs, degeneracy, doublespeak, and peculiar customs. Like The Bride of Frankenstein, the namesake doesn’t show up until the final moments of the film, but it leaves an indelible impression long after the credits roll.

Hitchcock's films are still highly regarded and influential today due to his innovative storytelling techniques and ability to create suspense across multiple genres. The 1998 remake of Psycho, despite having a promising cast and director, was widely criticized for being a soulless cash grab that added nothing to Hitchcock's original masterpiece. Remaking or adapting any of Hitchcock's films is seen as inherently risky, as the potential for a successful update is often overshadowed by the reverence and elite status of the original works.
One particularly terrible remake of an Alfred Hitchcock horror classic is all the reason why the historic filmmaker's works shouldn't be touched. Although he released his final film as a living director in 1976, Hitchcock remains a titan of film history to this day, responsible for some of the most brilliant and innovative movies of the Hollywood Golden Age era and of all time. The Warden's Law is a Legendary Hand Cannon reintroduced in season 22 of Destiny 2. This weapon archetype is fantastic in both PvP and PvE content. The Warden's Law is the first Legendary Hand Cannon to be given the new Heavy Burst subcategory in the game. The weapon fires a hard-hitting, two-round burst. This offers a fun aspect that cannot be found with other Legendary Hand Cannons.
Guardians can earn the Warden's Law from the Vanguard Nightfall playlist in Destiny 2. This also means that the Adept version of the Hand Cannon drops during the Grand Master difficulty. You can guarantee the Warden's Law as a reward from the final chest by defeating all champions in the Nightfall, earning a Platinum Rank. The main benefit to acquiring the Adept version of the Hand Cannon is that Guardians can equip Adept mods. The Warden's Law sits in the Primary slot and deals Kinetic damage.

The many subclasses in Dungeons & Dragons 5e offer a way to make a unique character beyond the choice of a base class and race, but there are subclasses many are playing incorrectly, either by misunderstanding the rules or not using the subclass optimally. Despite the edition’s long lifespan, many basic D&d 5e rules are still misinterpreted, which makes the subclasses that involve those rules harder to play. Finding the best use for a subclass often requires a bit more analysis, as well, since tactics that might seem intuitive may not be well-supported by the mechanics of the game, while other approaches synergize perfectly.
Delving deeper into the rules might make some favorite subclasses seem less appealing than they used to be, while others that seemed lackluster could become standouts. The game balance of D&d assumes gaming groups use the rules as written. While house rules can make a campaign more fun,...

The Transformers are returning to comics this fall thanks to Robert Kirkman's Skybound Entertainment and their new Energon Universe, but from advanced material for Transformers #1, it appears the new publisher of the Robots in Disguise is keeping one controversial mistake from the original cartoon: the color scheme of Decepticon Soundwave.
Transformers #1 – written by Daniel Warren Johnson – brings the Autobots and Decepticons into Skybound's Energon Universe shared continuity, alongside G.I. Joe, and Skybound originals such as Void Rivals, the debut issue of which ended with the shocking appearance of Jetfire from the Transformers universe. With the opportunity to reset the Transformers status quo, it is notable that the creative team opted not to revert Soundwave to his original colors.

Love him or hate him, what Quentin Tarantino has achieved over his more than 30 years of filmmaking is inarguably impressive. Not only is the “Reservoir Dogs” writer/director a renowned auteur — nominated three times for the Best Director Oscar with two Best Original Screenplay wins for “Pulp Fiction” and “Django Unchained” — Tarantino is also a well-versed film critic whose encyclopedic knowledge of other artists’ filmographies precedes him.
Living in Los Angeles, the “Pulp Fiction” director famously began his journey to cinematic rock star status as an employee at the Video Archives rental store in Manhattan Beach: since closed, rebuilt in Tarantino’s basement, and turned into a podcast he hosts with longtime friend and collaborator Roger Avary. It was in the bygone era of rewindable tapes that Tarantino cut his critical teeth: combing through the store’s collection, full of everything from black-and-white classics to straight-to-tv sci-fi specials.

Classic folk horror movie The Wicker Man turns fifty later this year, but today, May 1, 2023, makes for the perfect time to celebrate its momentous anniversary.
The entire premise centers around May Day festivities, after all, building its horror around the themes of rebirth, fertility, and the driving desire for an isolated community to thrive with a fruitful harvest. What’s now considered a foundational pillar of folk horror wasn’t always the case. The Wicker Man eschewed conventional horror tactics that puzzled upon initial release, mining its ultimate terror from one unforgettable ending.

Doctor Who vet Bernard Cribbins has died at the age of 93, Variety reports. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

Emin Alper’s political thriller “Burning Days” competes in Un Certain Regard section of Cannes Film Festival, where we had the opportunity to sit down and talk about his impressive film which comes three years after his multiple awarded drama “Tale of Three Sisters”, and seven years after the success of “Frenzy” in Venice.
“Burning Days” is a story about a young, scrupulous persecutor who is sent to a small rural city in Anatolia to deal with a corrupted mayor, and problems with water shortage and wrongdoings that led to the appearance of a giant sinkhole in the area. His dedication to the job, and the honest way of approaching problems meet the strong resistance of the community atatched to the mayor, and he also ends up investigating a crime committed during the night he has no recollection of, but he suspects of having witnessed.

Turkish screenwriter and director Emin Alper, whose dystopian drama (“Frenzy”) in 2015 made a splash in Venice and who more recently helmed hit TV series “Aleph” about two detectives on the trail of a dervish-turned-serial killer in Istanbul, is in Cannes for the first time with incendiary drama “Burning Days” screening in Un Certain Regard.
It’s about a young and earnest prosecutor named Emre who gets pulled into corrupt populist politics while investigating a murder and forms a bond with the owner of the local newspaper.
Alper spoke to Variety about how “Burning Days” reflects the rise of authoritarian populism and mounting homophobia, and not just in his country. Excerpts
This is pretty explosive stuff. What drew you to the subject matter?
Over the past years I’ve been surprised to see that similar things are happening around the world. We experienced Trump, for example. It was really shocking for me.

I hadn’t seen any of Adrienne Shelly’s work at the time of her death, but you couldn’t follow the film world in 2006 without hearing about what happened. News sites first latched onto the assumption of suicide only to discover what happened was murder—the culprit found, arrested, and confessed shortly afterwards. And amidst that tragic whirlwind during the final two months of that year, Shelly’s latest film as writer-director-star, Waitress, was in submission at Sundance. It would eventually bow at the festival, find distribution, become an overnight indie darling, and spawn a Broadway musical adaptation with songs by Sara Bareilles. She unfortunately never...

If 2021 has been a calvacade of bad decisions, dashed hopes, and warning signs for cinema’s strength, the Criterion Channel’s monthly programming has at least buttressed our hopes for something like a better tomorrow. Anyway. The Channel will let us ride out distended (holi)days in the family home with an extensive Alfred Hitchcock series to bring the family together—from the established Rear Window and Vertigo to the (let’s just guess) lesser-seen Downhill and Young and Innocent—Johnnie To’s Throw Down and Orson Welles’ The Magnificent Ambersons in their Criterion editions, and some streaming premieres: Ste. Anne, Lydia Lunch: The War is Never Over, and The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love.
Special notice to Yvonne Rainer’s brain-expanding Film About a Woman Who . . .—debuting in “Female Gaze: Women Directors + Women Cinematographers,” a series that does as it says on the tin—and a Joseph Cotten retro boasting Ambersons,...
