CBS' "Family Affair" wasn't the biggest sitcom of its era, nor was it the most groundbreaking, but it popularized a found-family formula that would endure for decades after its original run. The series followed a lifelong bachelor, Bill (Brian Keith), whose lifestyle is interrupted by the sudden arrival of his three orphaned nieces and nephews. Clueless about parenthood yet suddenly the dad of three grieving kids, Bill recruited the help of several other characters throughout the series — most notably, his loyal British manservant, French (Sebastian Cabot).
"Family Affair" ran for five seasons on CBS beginning in 1966, and though it doesn't appear in syndication as often as other shows from its era, the series is still fondly remembered by those who saw it. Unfortunately, the show is also remembered for the unusual amount of tragedy that befell its stars. Child star Anissa Jones died of an overdose just five years after the show ended,...

Steven Spielberg horror movies don't necessarily come to mind when talking about the most prolific horror movie directors. However, the E.T. filmmaker has dabbled in such multi-genre projects in his sprawling career that his contributions to that genre cannot be denied. Just consider the tension-building he achieved with Jaws and Jurassic Park. Instead of focusing on the supernatural, Spielberg has mostly tapped into real-world fears such as a shark terrorizing a local beach or a genetic engineering project with catastrophic consequences. While Jaws turned him into a household name, even his previous work included horror TV films such as Something Evil and Duel.
Spielberg’s connection with the horror genre goes all the way back to his first professional job, which involved filming segments of the pilot episode of the horror anthology Night Gallery. The pilot proved how Spielberg has also dabbled in the fear of the supernatural. This...

Cinematographer best known for his work on Jaws, Grease and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
“I hear you’re making a movie about a fish,” the cinematographer Bill Butler said to the young director Steven Spielberg when they bumped into each other on the Universal lot in 1974. Butler, then in his early 50s, had already shot two projects for Spielberg – the TV movie Something Evil (1972) and Savage (1973), a pilot that was not taken up as a series. But it was their collaboration on the “fish movie” that cemented their reputations.
Summer was not previously regarded as an optimum time to release a big studio picture, which is why Jaws (1975), which flooded screens across the US rather than trickling out in stages, is considered the first summer blockbuster – though its finesse and skill, not to mention an intimate second half in which the cast dwindles to three men and a largely unseen shark,...

The legendary, Oscar-nominated cinematographer of Steven Spielberg’s horror classic Jaws, Bill Butler passed away Wednesday at the age of 101 years old, THR reports this morning.
The site notes, “He would have turned 102 on Friday.”
It was back in 1976 that Bill Butler was co-nominated for a “Best Cinematography” statue at that year’s Academy Awards for his work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a film released just one year after Butler served as Cinematographer on the horror classic Jaws.
“His iconic shots included the early dawn attack of the first victim that opens the film, the Vertigo-inspired dolly zoom that accompanies Chief Brody’s shock at witnessing a shark attack from the beach and the extreme close-ups of panicking swimmers,” THR explains, detailing Bill Butler’s integral role in the making of the game-changing summer blockbuster.

Oscar-nominated Cinematographer Wilmer C. Butler, whose work included a series of landmark films such as The Conversation (1974), Jaws (1975) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), has died. He was 101. The American Society of Cinematographers confirmed Butler’s passing.
Butler was the ASC’s most senior member, and he had a resume to match. He worked with directors such as Philip Kaufman, Francis Ford Coppola, William Friedkin, Richard Donner, Jack Nicholson, Sylvester Stallone, Ivan Reitman, Tobe Hooper, Joseph Sargent, Mike Nichols, John Cassavetes and Steven Spielberg.
Friedkin convinced Butler to be the cinematographer on The People vs. Paul Crump, a documentary about a prisoner slated for execution in Illinois. The project got Crump’s death sentence commuted.
He got his start in features with Philip Kaufman’s 1967 film Fearless Frank. Two years later, Friedkin introduced Butler to Francis Ford Coppola, with whom he shot The Rain People before going on to...

Emmy-winning cinematographer Bill Butler, who was Oscar nominated for shooting “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” and was also the D.P. on Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws,” died Wednesday, according to the American Society of Cinematographers. He was 101.
Spielberg remembered Butler in a statement, saying, “On ‘Jaws,’ Bill Butler was the bedrock on that rickety, rocking boat called the Orca. He was the only calm in the middle of that storm, and as we went into a battle against nature and technology that wore both of us down, the audience eventually won the war. Bill’s outlook on life was pragmatic, philosophical and so very patient, and I owe him so much for his steadfast and creative contributions to the entire look of ‘Jaws.’”
In addition to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” Butler served as d.p. on a number of other high-profile films of the 1970s, including Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation,...

Bill Butler, the self-taught, Oscar-nominated cinematographer whose work on the landmark 1975 horror film Jaws unleashed a wave of anxiety for beachgoers that lasts to this day, has died. He would have turned 102 on Friday.
Butler died Wednesday evening in Los Angeles, according to the American Society of Cinematographers. He is survived by five daughters and his wife, Iris.
During his five-decade career, Butler also shot Francis Ford Coppola’s The Rain People (1969) and The Conversation (1974); Peter Hyams’ Capricorn One (1977); Randal Kleiser’s hit musical Grease (1978); and Rocky II (1979), Rocky III (1982) and Rocky IV (1985), all written and directed by and starring Sylvester Stallone.
On another noteworthy 1975 release, Butler replaced the fired Haskell Wexler midway through production on Milos Forman‘s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Both shared an Oscar cinematography nomination for their work.
Butler also had replaced Wexler on The Conversation after creative differences forced Wexler off that production early on.

In January 1998 I attended a book signing in New York City emceed by author Russell Banks and film director Atom Egoyan. They were on hand to autograph copies of Mr. Banks’s 1991 novel, The Sweet Hereafter, which had been made into a 1997 film of the same name by Mr. Egoyan. Despite varying greatly, the novel and the film both concern the aftereffects of life in a small town in the Adirondacks when fourteen children die following an accident involving their school bus when it careens off a slippery, snow-covered road and sinks into the frozen waters of a nearby body of water. Mr. Egoyan claimed that he was inspired to make the film because, he felt, something terrible will happen to everyone at some point in his or her life, and they will need to find a way to move on.

While some directors learned their craft through thrift bare independent features, others came up through the TV divisions of studios; one such fellow, Steven Spielberg, would go on to have a fairly successful career with big screen projects. Before he would make that leap however, he started with episodic shows, and then onto TV films like Something Evil (1972), a fun ride that shows the kid knows his way around a camera. I’m glad things turned out okay for him.
Originally airing on January 21st as part of the CBS Friday Night Movies, Something Evil had the ABC Friday night juggernaut of The Odd Couple/Love, American Style to contend with, and posted Something Lesser in the ratings. Too bad, because even though Something Evil’s material, from the title on down, is paper thin, Spielberg whips up one hell of a wallpaper.

World War Z – Max Brooks
Easily one of the best zombie apocalypse tales out there mostly because of the presentation by Author Max Brooks. The novel is laid out as if it is an actual collection of interviews, journalistic reports, and historical notes. We see how people all over the globe both discovered the apocalypse in their region and then survived it. From a young Japanese teenager so detached from reality thanks to the internet that he only realizes something is wrong when his friends and family begin disappearing from the web to the military who were so technologically connected to the war against the threat that it actually brought their morale down.
Brooks brings all the interviews and news clippings together to create an incredibly believable look at how a virus threat would spread across the globe, how it would affect everyone and every region differently, and how humanity...

Next June, readers of Stephen King's Bill Hodges books will be rewarded with Scribner's hardcover release of End of Watch, the follow-up novel to Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers. Director Steven Spielberg struck ratings gold with his 1971 Movie of the Week, Duel, and the film is still regarded today as one of the best TV movies ever made. It certainly jump-started his career which until that point consisted of him being a journeyman director for TV shows like Columbo and Night Gallery. Most people would be forgiven for thinking he moved straight from Duel to Jaws while others know that his big screen debut, The Sugarland Express, predates the shark movie by a year. But relatively few seem to realize he made a second TV movie in the early ’70s — about an innocent family and a house with demonic intentions — because for some reason it’s never before been released on any home video format. Paul and Marjorie Worden (Darren McGavin and Sandy Dennis) move out of New York City with their two kids in tow and buy a home in the countryside. She...

Every year during the Halloween season, I make a point of searching out at least one horror movie that I've never seen before. This year I started going through some horror movies from the 1980s, and as you might expect, a lot of them look like ridiculous yet entertaining flicks. Since Halloween is coming up, I thought it would be fun to make a list of some of these movies that I came across that I have never heard of before and ones that maybe you haven't seen before either. I included a short synopsis, poster, and trailer for each one. Make sure you watch the trailer because some of them are sure to make you laugh. I love these kinds of films!
Alone In the Dark - 1982

Something evil lurks in the dark. That statement has never been more true than in the brand new trailer for one of PlayStation’s hottest exclusives, Bloodborne. Everything about this game lies under a thick cloak of mystery, but the trailer speaks of a hunter’s return and may hint that the game’s protagonist is a monster hunter.
This new look very much succeeds at showing off some of the hideous monsters that dwell within the nether reaches of Bloodborne. With giant crows, lycanthrope-inspired monsters, hammer-wielding humanoid beasts, and a giant creature giant more profane than anything I have ever witnessed, this game will truly pack a horrific punch.

The overlooked greats of the year 1998 come under the spotlight in our list of its 25 underappreciated movies...
Dominated as it was by the financial success of two giant killer asteroid movies, gross-out comedy hit There's Something About Mary and Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, 1998 proved to be an extraordinary year for cinema.
Okay, so history doesn't look back too fondly on Roland Emmerich's mishandled Godzilla remake, and Lethal Weapon 4 was hardly the best buddy-cop flick ever made, despite its handsome profit. But search outside the top-10 grossing films of that year, and you'll find all kinds of spectacular modern classics: Peter Weir's wonderful The Truman Show, John Frankenheimer's rock-solid thriller Ronin, and Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line.
Then there was The Big Lebowski, the Coen brothers' sublime comedy that has since become a deserved and oft-quoted cult favourite.

"Something evil lurks under Gotham City and it wears the Joker's face". Is she really The Joker's daughter, or just a sick fan? Or could this be the New 52 debut of Duela Dent, the insane young woman who has claimed to be the daughter of various super-villains in the DC Universe? We don't know when or in which series this character will appear, but it should be very interesting to find out some more about her.

Shock Interview: Derrickson & Cargill On the Creation of Sinister, Its Bogeyman and Keeping It Scary
Something evil was born when a member of the online movie criticism community and a Hollywood director collided. For once, it wasn't some all-out argument battle on Twitter or flame war on a message board; it was actually something positive and creative (shocker!). In fact, the end result of this pairing was a feature film endeavor called Sinister, the highly recommended supernatural thriller starring Ethan Hawke (opening October 12th from Summit Entertainment).
The film is the birthchild of The Exorcism of Emily Rose's director Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, the man known as "Massawyrm," a movie critic from Ain't It Cool News. Under Blumhouse Productions - the company that gave us the Paranormal Activity series and Insidious - Derrickson and Cargill collaborated on this effective slice of scare cinema which concerns a writer (Hawke) who discovers a box of Super 8 film in his basement and the creepiness that ensues.

Returning from a filmmaking hiatus after banging out three feature films, Midwest indie filmmaker Marc Selz is ready to jump back into the movie-making fray, beginning with the grand opening of his new production company Psycho Logical Pictures.
No matter how much actual production comes out of this production company, we feel Selz has already scored big-time by coming up with such a catchy, creative title for his venture. But if history is any indicator, Selz will certainly be ultra-productive as he previously completed Short Cut Road, The Rockville Slayer and Satanic Panic and had distribution on all three films simultaneously.
The official Psycho Logical Pictures website will be launching soon. Keep an eye out for more on Selz and Psycho Logical Pictures.

It's been a newsy day. We lost Tonino Guerra and Ulu Grosbard, the Hong Kong and New Directors/New Films festivals have opened, Takashi Miike has yet another film on the way and Casablanca, celebrating its 70th, is playing coast to coast. It's also been a fine day for posters, so I'm pepping up today's Briefing with a few for festivals and events happening soon or already ongoing. Kevin Tong designed the one above for the three films that Edgar Wright will be on hand to present at the opening of the Alamo Drafthouse on Slaughter Lane in Austin this weekend.

Apartment Seven (Kindle Edition) by Greg F. Gifune
(DarkFuse)
It’s Christmastime in the city, but all is not merry. Something is happening in Apartment Seven. Something evil.
Charlie Cerrone thought he had it all—a loving marriage, a good job, a nice home and financial security—until the night his wife betrayed him and his entire world came crashing down.
Angry and confused, Charlie wanders the streets of Boston after dark, dazed and searching for answers, trying to figure out why his wife has apparently taken up with another man and why she’s been frequenting a strangely ominous and otherwise abandoned building late at night in one of the worst neighborhoods in the city.
Throughout the cold winter night, Charlie descends deeper and deeper into a nightmarish journey that encompasses his past, present and future, a terrifying and surreal odyssey that leads him through the darkest alleys and...

You know how they say that money is the root of all evil? Well, let us tell you that family is not far behind. Blood is only thicker than water because of the density of the troubles caused by these bastards. Case in point: the new terror tale As Night Falls.

When you think you’re going to visit the set of a feature film you have these glorious images of massive soundstages, cameras and movie stars running around. You don’t think you’ll be driving to the middle of nowhere. In fact, on our way to the set of “Mentryville” we drove right past the Hollywood system and found ourselves smack dab in the middle of industrial Valencia, Ca. Trade iconic numbered soundstages for nameless business warehouses and you’ve got one of the sets of “Mentryville.” Today we visited one of the key locations for this sci-fi film about an out of control pharmaceutical company. Right away it’s clear, that as far as this film is concerned, less is more. Jason Dudek is directing this indepedent sci-fi film for American World Pictures about an Iraqi war veteran who returns from battle to find his life once again in chaos.

It looks like Nicolas Cage and John Travolta are going to team up for possibly not one, but two new films again for the first time since they starred together in 1997's Face/Off.
One film is called Shrapnel written by Evan Doughtery (Snow White and the Huntsman). It was on the 2008 screenwriter Black List of unproduced films. It follows a former Bosnian soldier who seeks vengeance against the American who badly wounded him by disguising a deadly war game as a friendly backwoods hunting trip.
This sounds like it would be a great movie! The film is gearing up for a June shoot date.
The second project comes from producer Chuck Roven and is called Sea Trial, from City Island writer/director Raymond De Felitta. The film is based on the eponymous novel by De Felitta's father, novelist Frank De Felitta. The book is about a couple that takes...

There is always something out there in the classic science fiction film. No one knows what is out there, or where it comes from, or what it wants, but it is out there. As a rule, it will continue to stay out there for a long time, because the film-makers understand that letting the audience think about what may be out there is a lot scarier than actually seeing what is out there. What is out there is a generic, off-the-rack alien. It may look like a new, improved version of Godzilla or like the stylish, designer monsters in Aliens, or the arachnid-like creatures in Cloverfield, or it may appear as the gigantic mutant serpent-fish in Korean horror movies, or like the Terminator, or the extraterrestrial steroid kings in Predators, or like the enormous metallic insects in Starship Troopers, but it will not be scary – not really scary – in the...
