The film's story was inspired by the real-life kidnapping of Barbara Jane Mackle in Florida in 1968.
Originally titled "The Candy Snatch"; it was changed to "The Candy Snatchers" because the first title made the film sound like a porn film.
Director Guerdon Trueblood and co-star Vince Martorano had been best friends at George Washington University in Virginia and, both being interested in the film industry, had made a bet to see which one of them would find success there first. Trueblood became an in-demand writer for TV series and movies-of-the-week, and when he got the job of directing the film "The Candy Snatchers", he asked writer Bryan Gindoff to create the character of Eddy specifically for Martorano, who was working as a commercial fisherman when he was summoned by Trueblood to star in the film.
This film was shot at various locations entirely without permits.
Despite "The Candy Snatchers" in particular garnering a cult following, Tiffany Bolling was dismissive of the film and took the role only for the money, elaborating "I was doing cocaine and I didn't really know what I was doing. I was very angry about the way that my career had gone in the industry, the opportunities that I had and had not been given. The hardest thing for me, as I look back on it, was I had done 'The New People' (1969) TV series and I had a lot of young people who really respected me and revered me as something of a hero, and then I came out with this stupid 'Candy Snatchers' movie. It was a horrendous experience."
