Sam and Janet get caught in the crossfire for once as their son Peter drops out of college to travel the world with his new acquaintance Ron, a fully paid-up member of the alternative society. Janet and her daughter Patsy, however, concoct a plan to sabotage Peter's plans. Sam, too, is almost persuaded by Ron's idealism until he is brought back to earth with a bump.

Sam catches a burglar in his house, but after being persuaded by his wife Janet to let him go after he told them a sob story about his eight children and this was his first attempt at crime, he discovers that three of his neighbours were robbed by the burglar after they let him go. Sam, left with the problem of explaining to the police - and his neighbours - why his house was the only one not burgled that night, joins up with an old friend to try and solve the case.
