Half-Indian and ex-Green Beret, Billy Jack (Tom Laughlin) takes the law into his own hands when the Born Losers, a vicious motorcycle gang led by Danny Carmody (Jeremy Slate), rape four young women in the coastal town of Big Rock, California and then try to intimidate them into not testifying at the indictment hearing. While three of the women decide not to testify, the fourth, Vicky Barrington (Elizabeth James), comes under Billy's protection and stands up with him against the gang.
Born Losers was filmed from a screenplay by American writer and principal actress Elizabeth James (Lloyd). The story was based on a 1964 incident where members of the Hells Angels motorcycle club were arrested for raping two teenage girls during a Labor Day weekend beach party near Monterey, California. The film was followed by four sequels: Billy Jack (1971) (1971), The Trial of Billy Jack (1974) (1974), Billy Jack Goes to Washington (1977) (1977), and The Return of Billy Jack (1986) (uncompleted).
When Billy learns that Vicky is still with the Losers in their beach house, he races over there only to find her naked, beaten, bloody, and lying on the floor. When the Losers come back, Billy is waiting. He forces them at gunpoint to line up against the wall, then orders Danny to appoint two of his mamas to take Vicky to the hospital and have the doctor call when she gets there. He gives the girls 15 minutes until he starts shooting at Losers. Danny laughs and refuses to comply, so Billy gives him to the count of three. When Danny continues to laugh and make threats, Billy shoots him right between the eyes. Child (William Wellman Jr.) then takes over leadership and orders the girls to take Vicky to the hospital. Meanwhile, the police are gathering outside the house. Billy forces the Losers outside where they are immediately apprehended by the police. Billy exits from a back door and tries to get away on a motorcycle but is shot in the back by a policeman. In the final scene, Vicky finds Billy lying by a lake and near death. She confesses her love for him, and a flight-for-life helicopter carries him off to a hospital.
