The Roku Channel will be the exclusive U.S. streaming home of the X Games Aspen as well as a summertime X Games event.

The news marks the latest step in Roku’s efforts to build a portfolio of live sports rights. The company has recently streamed weekly Major League Baseball games, the NBA G League and electric racing circuit Formula E. It also has invested in live sports talk with Gmfb: Overtime and The Rich Eisen Show.

The X Games were created by ESPN in the 1990s in an effort to lure young viewers with an Olympics-like showcase for sports then known as “extreme,” including motocross, skateboarding, freestyle skiing and snowboarding. Winter and summer events became mainstays on ESPN, reliably filling out the linear schedule even if they never delivered the blockbuster ratings of more established sports. In 2022, ESPN sold the X Games to private equity firm Msp Sports Capital.

The free streaming service has locked up two X Games events in the coming year.

Netflix taking on the second season marks a rare occurrence of a YouTube-originated show moving to a streamer.

At the end of 2023, Amazon announced it would enter its AVOD era by introducing ads to Prime Video, the movie and TV streaming service that comes bundled with its $14.99/month Prime membership. Ads began running Jan. 29, 2024, with Amazon setting an internal goal to sell $1.8 billion in video marketing commitments this year.

And, according to a person familiar with the matter, the ecommerce giant is now set to surpass that goal, Deadline reports. Ad sales have reportedly been helped by Amazon hosting its first-ever upfronts presentation, putting it more squarely in competition with AVOD king YouTube and Netflix.

As the anonymous “Contestant 5” states in the heavily redacted complaint seeing a jury trial, “I expected to be challenged, but I didn’t think I would be treated like nothing — less than nothing.”

Possibly running into the millions in damages if certified, the September 16 filing in Los Angeles Superior Court alleges that MrBeast and the Jeff Bezos-created streamer “subjected the Contestants to unreasonable, unsafe, and unlawful employment conditions.” With claims of sexual harassment, failure to prevent harassment, false advertising, and failure to pay minimum wage or overtime, those conditions saw “several contestants …hospitalized,” the 54-page document alleges.
