Originally planned as an episode of the collective movie Love and Anger (1969), it was eventually expanded to a feature length.
The film was originally the idea of director Corey Allen, who sought out Charles Manson as a script consultant. And similar to Dennis Wilson's experiences with the Manson family, Allen became troubled by Manson and his family and broke off all relations.
