With its revolutionary mix of shocking-for-its-time violence and sociopolitical themes, George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead quickly proved to be enormously influential with filmmakers around the world, and few were able to match its power like Jorge Grau’s The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue. Mixing a strong environmental statement with unforgettably terrifying set pieces, Grau’s film stands on its own as a horror classic, and now it’s been restored to its horrifying glory by Synapse Films in an exclusive new Steelbook release!
A strange twist of fate brings two young travelers, George and Edna, to a small town where an experimental agricultural machine may be bringing the dead back to life! As zombies infest the area and attack the living, a bull-headed detective thinks the couple are Satanists responsible for the local killings. George and Edna have to fight for their lives, and prove their innocence,...

Man versus Nature, Man versus Beast, Man versus Food; all mythical in status to varying degrees and most represented on the silver screen. Of Unknown Origin (1983) tackles the middle myth with a tongue firmly planted in its giant rat infested cheek and is an obsessive tour through a domestic hellscape.
Released in November by Warner Brothers, and produced in conjunction with some of that glorious Canadian tax shelter money (you’re welcome, eh), Of Unknown Origin only made back a quarter of its $4 million budget. It didn’t wow the critics either, although Peter Weller (Robocop) was singled out for his wry performance as the put upon vermin victim.
Bart Hughes (Weller) has it all; the perfect wife (Shannon Tweed, in her feature film debut) and son, a high paying job, and a beautiful brownstone in New York. (Read: Montreal. Tax coin. Beauty.) Wife and child head off for a...

Let’s face it, most of us have a soft spot for things blowing up in movies, and for a long time movies have been happy to feed our appetite for destruction. But it wasn’t always that way.
I know it’s hard to imagine, but there was a time when explosions weren’t so common in movies. Back then, big-budget movies had dancing and singing, and everyone had a merry time. After WWII though, things started to change. In newspapers and magazines, Americans were being exposed to terrible images of war-torn Europe and Japan. This imagery was haunting, yet it sparked some imaginations. At first, Hollywood was careful not to glamorize it. They figured out a way to show massive destruction and violence while making it fun and moderately profitable instead of soul-crushing and distasteful. The 50’s became known for its low-budget cheese-fests; sci-fi B movies featuring such...

You can't choose your neighbors in an apartment complex, and sometimes you get stuck next to a noisy, mean-spirited soul who makes you want to look in the classified ads before you even finish unpacking. Alison Parker has some rowdy neighbors around her new Brooklyn apartment, but what disturbs her the most is that nobody else lives on her floor. And that's only one of many creepy elements to be found in 1977's The Sentinel, and fans of the cult classic fright film should be excited to hear that Scream Factory has announced they will release The Sentinel on Blu-ray this summer.
From Scream Factory: "We are beyond thrilled today to report that we will be bringing the 1977 cult classic chiller The Sentinel to Blu-ray for the first time in the U.S. and Canada!

They’re wobbly, dangerous, and a familiar sight in the movies. Here’s our celebration of the most memorably rickety bridges in cinema…
It's a plot device familiar from numerous films: the rickety bridge. Whether you're making a horror, disaster or action movie, a rickety or collapsing bridge is a quick, simple way of introducing added suspense. The wobbly crossing and tumbling walkway is such a familiar movie staple, in fact, that I almost wonder if the writers of Hollywood don't have some sort of patent on the device.
What follows is a selection of some of the most poorly made, disaster-prone bridges in cinematic history...
The Lost World (1925)
One of the earliest examples of a cinematic rickety bridge I've seen, this early adaptation of Conan Doyle's dinosaur-filled novel was a clear influence on the numerous monster movies that came after.

We take a look back at Leviathan, a sci-fi horror hotchpotch of Alien, The Thing and Jaws, in which Peter Weller takes on a vodka-fuelled fish monster…
As 80s B-movies go, Leviathan surely boasts one of the coolest casts of the decade. Even on paper, a film that stars RoboCop, Colonel Trautman out of the Rambo movies, one of the hapless villains out of Home Alone and its sequel, plus Ghostbusters’ Winston Zeddemore sounds great. As does its premise, which is essentially a schlocky rip-off of Alien and The Thing.
One of a flotilla of undersea sci-fi thrillers to drift out of Hollywood in the decade (see also James Cameron’s flashier The Abyss, Roger Corman’s Lord Of The Deep and Sean S Cunningham’s DeepStar Six, to name a few), Leviathan was the product of the late Florentine director George Pan Cosmatos, whose work also included train-based disaster flick The Cassandra Crossing,...

Screenwriter from a Hollywood dynasty best known for his work on James Bond
For most film buffs, the name Mankiewicz immediately recalls Joseph L, the director and screenwriter of All About Eve (1950). For others, it evokes that of his older brother, Herman J, most celebrated as the writer of the screenplay of Citizen Kane. However, Joseph L's son, Tom Mankiewicz, who has died of cancer aged 68, is cherished by James Bond fans as the screenwriter of Diamonds Are Forever (1971), Live and Let Die (1973) and The Man With the Golden Gun (1974), as well as having worked on rewrites of The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) and Moonraker (1979).
At the beginning of his career, Mankiewicz admitted that he probably got work because of his father. "You suddenly started to realise that people were asking you because it was you," he explained. Unlike his father's best films – literate, dialogue-based vehicles – when a director called...

Bond Screenwriter Mankiewicz Dies
Celebrated Hollywood screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz has died at the age of 68.
The writer, best known for his work on a string of 007 movies, passed away at his home in Los Angeles on Friday after a brief illness.
Mankiewicz began his career working in television and became known for helping create successful musical show Nancy Sinatra: Movin' with Nancy in 1967, which also starred Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Lee Hazelwood.
He went on to write for the Broadway adaptation of Georgy Girl, which was nominated for three Tony Awards after it opened in 1970, but closed after just four performances.
Mankiewicz joined the superspy franchise in 1971, co-writing the script for Diamonds Are Forever, and he went on to work on numerous Bond films including Live and Let Die, The Man With the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker.
He later moved on to another famous franchise, bringing Superman to the big screen in the Man of Steel's self-titled cinematic debut in 1978. He also helped write 1980's Superman II.
Mankiewicz's other movie credits include The Cassandra Crossing, The Eagle Has Landed, Ladyhawke and 1987's Dragnet, which he also directed, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz, best known for his work on the James Bond flicks Diamonds Are Forever, Live and Let Die, and The Man with the Golden Gun, and for the 1978 Superman, died Saturday, July 31, at his Los Angeles home. Mankiewicz, who had been suffering from cancer, was 68. In addition to his work as a screenwriter (other credits include The Sweet Ride, The Cassandra Crossing, and Ladyhawke), the Los Angeles-born (June 1, 1942) Mankiewicz directed a handful of features and television productions. Among those were Dragnet (1987), starring Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd in a poorly received rehash of the old television series; John Candy‘s 1991 comedy flop Delirious; and several episodes of the TV series Hart to Hart, which starred Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers. A 90-second promo for Jj Abrams's new collaboration with Steven Spielberg was shown before midnight screenings of Iron Man 2

A 90-second trailer for Super 8, a film written and directed by Abrams and produced by Spielberg, was shown before midnight screenings of Iron Man 2 in certain Californian cinemas.
Opening with the words, "In 1979, the Us Air Force closed a section of Area 51," it proceeds to show a pick-up truck darting at high speed through a barren highway before being clobbered into combustion by a speeding train. Amid the wreckage of the crash we hear a pounding. We are shown a...
