Yul Brynner and Barbara Bouchet, who play lovers in the film, did not get along. Bouchet was with Brynner in his dressing room going over lines when he took off his unwashed socks and threw them at the wardrobe lady's face. "Wash them," he told her. Boucher didn't like that at all. So when she found out he was superstitious about carnations, she anonymously sent a big bouquet of carnations to his dressing room.
