Although the film was reported to be a disastrous box office bomb back in 1976, the box office records for the film have remained anonymous and it is unknown how much money the film made during its theatrical run.
Was Whitney Houston's favorite movie. She later would gain remake rights for the film around 2000. Her original plan was to have the late R&B artist Aaliyah star as the title character before she passed away. The film eventually was released a decade later as Sparkle (2012) starring Houston herself and Jordin Sparks.
Joel Schumacher's screenwriting debut. He would later go on to write the screenplay for The Wiz (1978) which starred Diana Ross, whose background as one of The Supremes served as inspiration for this film.
The film was theatrically released merely five years before the premiere of Dreamgirls, a Broadway Musical that was also based on Diana Ross and the Supremes.
