Generally film titles are considered a minor aspect of the final film, but this proves otherwise. Saul Bass, the renowned pioneer in the area of title design, gives an introduction into his work. A highly articulate man, Mr. Bass makes us see - and understand - different functions a title sequence can have for a movie. I missed some of his outstanding work though, like the ones from "Psycho" or "The man with the Golden Arm". But stills of that aren't hard to come by. See for yourself, it's good stuff. Convention shattering, too.

Saul Bass the Greatest Designer America has ever given Birth.
This is the first film and/or video ever documented on the craft of film titles. No Film Title Designer has since tried to replicate SAUL BASS' overwhelming success with this documentary.
Examples are exemplary. And certainly shows why SAUL BASS is anointed the preeminent Film Title Designer to the World.
Unfortunately Title Design as a profession is not taught in a University or College. One has to learn this craft on the job from a master.
Clearly studying Saul Bass triumphs with these live action and graphic footage. Entices the viewer to imagine himself or herself in place of the Title Designer.
The imagery is visceral which touches the emotions.
Bass on Titles is full to the Brim of stunning imagery and technique. A lesson in Title Design not afforded by another means of communication.

This short film is available on the DVD "Short 11: Ecstasy", along with a bunch of other shorts. It's very good to see if you like Saul Bass.
