Los Angeles – The suave, Australian-born Rod Taylor may have been a leading man footnote in the early to mid-1960s, but he did star in a notable classic: the Alfred Hitchcock-directed “The Birds”. His chiseled good looks and sincere acting style were also memorable in a career that spanned more than 50 years. Rod Taylor passed away of a heart attack in Los Angeles on Jan. 7 2015, according to his daughter, Felicia Taylor. He was 84.
Rodney Sturt Taylor was born in Lidcombe, Australia, and was inspired to acting after seeing Sir Laurence Olivier portray Richard III. He played an American – as he would in subsequent roles – in his 1954 debut film, “King of the Coral Sea.” A failed screen test for another role got him a contract at MGM, and he made his debut as a leading man in the popular sci-fi film, “The Time Machine.” What followed was a scatter shot of lead roles,...

Australia.s independent cinemas should band together to share the costs of collecting data on their customers which will enable the indies to compete more effectively with the major chains.
That.s the key message which Movio CEO William Palmer will deliver at the Independent Cinemas Association of Australia conference being staged in Sydney on April 29 and 30.
The New Zealand-based Movio runs the data for the loyalty programs and concession sales at Village Cinemas, Event Cinemas, Hoyts, Palace, Rialto and Ace Cinemas, tracking the moviegoing habits and demographic profiles of 5.2 million people.
Palmer tells If, .I am suggesting the independents form a collective, an Icaa-type structure, to share the costs of collecting data, which also draws on social media and mobile apps, to compete with the major chains. They can commercialise the value of this data in market research and marketing campaigns..
He proposes a three-step plan. 1. Participating exhibitors agree...

It was recently made known that Criterion was working on a new Blu-ray/DVD release of Gojira (1954), but there have been some very exciting developments regarding the Us version titled Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956). A rare unedited print of the Us version has been found and should be included with Gojira on the Criterion release.
From August Ragone, via Twitch: “Yesterday, I posted the fantastic news that the Criterion Collection had slyly announced, with a simple photo, that they will be prepping a DVD/Bd release of the original Japanese version of Godzilla aka Gojira (1954), and while, it seems, that Honda’s seminal film will be getting a much-needed restoration, some have been asking if the corresponding Us version helmed by Terry O. Morse, Godzilla, King Of The Monsters! (1956), starring Raymond Burr, will be included in this release. Previous home video releases of this film — and all versions screened on television,...

The popularity of digital cinema has seen an increase in the day-to-day operational costs for independent theatres. Denis Parkes runs The Picture Show Man twin-cinema in Merimbula on the South Coast of New South Wales. In December last year, he replaced his 35mm projectors with two NEC projectors in order to make the most of the latest 3D offerings. Parks says that while the upgrade has been worth it, the associated cost of increased power consumption and maintenance has been .very, very significant.. The Picture Show Man uses two different NEC models . the 1200C and 2000C Dlp Digital Cinema Projectors. Both have 2D and 3D capabilities. The 1200C is used for the smaller cinema, which has a screen that spans nine metres, while the 2000C plays on the larger 11x18m...
