For a few years in the '90s, it seemed like Helen Hunt was destined to be a mainstay on the big and small screen alike forever. The actor landed her earliest movie role in 1977, playing a teenager in the disaster movie "Rollercoaster," which featured a singularly weird plot about a man trying to bomb an amusement park ride. Hunt continued to act over the next decade, taking roles in films like "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and "Peggy Sue Got Married," plus the popular doctor drama "St. Elsewhere." But it wasn't until the '90s, when Hunt earned a trifecta of great, memorable roles, that she truly became a household name.
Hunt's big break came from "Mad About You," a 1992 sitcom in which she played one half of a New York City newlywed couple opposite Paul Reiser. Plotlines for the show mined married life for humor, but they...

Pop history is littered with prolific partnerships, but the artist-producer pairing is arguably one of the most indispensable. Not only can an intrepid knob-twirler coax the best out of an artist, the most fruitful of these collaborations are often reciprocal. Think George Martin and the Beatles; Timbaland and Missy Elliott; or Jam & Lewis and Janet Jackson. Taylor Swift and former Fun guitarist-drummer Jack Antonoff have both achieved commercial and critical success outside of their work together, but their alliance over the last several years has, more often than not, resulted in pop magic.
The duo first worked together over a decade ago, on the unassuming “Sweeter Than Fiction,” a song from the British-American film One Chance. The following year, Antonoff co-wrote and co-produced three tracks for Swift’s blockbuster album 1989, the success of which propelled him to the top of every A&r exec’s wish list, helming tracks for Pink,...

Nick Jonas is among the many artists that have had enough of fans throwing things on stage.
The singer was performing at the Jonas Brothers gig in Sacramento, California on Monday when he dodged items chucked at him as he belted out the band’s song “Rollercoaster”.
He attempted to catch them and smiled, but he was adamant that fans shouldn’t throw anything else at him.
Jonas told the crowd “stop” a few times, before he carried on singing the track.

The Jonas Brothers are hitting the stage, and much like any other musician on stage, they too don’t appreciate objects being thrown at them. Nick Jonas was recently hit by an audience member throwing an item on stage, and Nick, who wasn’t cool with it, told the audience to knock it off.
The Jonas Brothers concert was being held on September 11, in California with a viral video surfacing two days later of objects being thrown by audience members on stage, either out of anger or for giggles.
In the TikTok video, Jonas is seen jamming out to their song ‘Rollercoaster’ as what looks to be a bunch of bracelets is flung at him onstage.
After Jonas attempted to catch a few of them, he smiled, shook his head and then seriously told fans to “stop” before continuing to sing the song, as per ‘People’ magazine.

Charity Lawson has found her perfect match! On Monday’s season finale of “The Bachelorette”, the child and family therapist got engaged to Dotun Olubeko, a Brooklyn-based integrative medicine specialist.
The couple’s engagement followed a difficult week for Charity, who sent home Aaron after he surprised her in Fiji, before having a heartbreaking split with her runner-up, Joey Graziadei.
However, all that was but a distant memory when Dotun arrived at the final rose ceremony of the season.
It’s no surprise that Dotun was Charity’s final choice. When Et spoke to the Bachelorette at the “Men Tell All” taping last month, she couldn’t help but gush over her now-fiancé.
“Dotun is just someone that communicates to me when I’m with him [that] literally nothing else is going on. I think we’re just so engulfed with each other,” she said. “His conversations are something for me that’s stimulating.

The Jonas Brothers's 2023 tour, aptly titled The Tour, is one of the hottest shows this summer. During every concert, the band is revisiting almost their entire discography by performing each song off their latest album, "The Album," as well as their previous four records: "Jonas Brothers," "A Little Bit Longer," "Lines, Vines and Trying Times," and "Happiness Begins." The setlist, which is made up of close to 70 songs, also includes tracks from their solo projects, including Dnce's "Cake by the Ocean" and Nick Jonas's "Jealous."
Since this is the most ambitious tour the Jonas Brothers have ever done, long-time fans of the group definitely won't want to miss seeing Nick, Kevin, and Joe Jonas when they come to their city. If you have tickets to see the trio, remember to snap plenty of concert photos because The Tour is set out to be a once-in-a-lifetime event.

The Amazon Prime Video series “The Summer I Turned Pretty” has made a splash with its loaded soundtrack. By now it is safe to say that “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and Taylor Swift go hand in hand because author and show creator Jenny Han has made it so.
The first season had five Swift songs ranging from her “Lover” album to “Fearless (Taylor’s Version),” and the Season 1 trailer debuted “This Love (Taylor’s Version)” from the yet-to-be-released re-recorded “1989.” Season 2’s teaser was set to “August,” and then the official trailer debuted “Back to December (Taylor’s Version)” shortly before “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” was released July 7. Only time will tell if Season 2 ties Season 1 for how many Taylor Swift songs it contains.
The sequel season’s summer-y soundtrack also contains hits from repeat artists Olivia Rodrigo, Tyler the Creator, Caroline Polachek and more. A Fleetwood Mac ballad punctuates a particularly emotional scene,...

You know what’s cool? A billion dollars. Theater stocks jumped when Amazon pledged to spend that amount on movies destined for the big screen last year. Now Apple reportedly plans to take a similar chunk of its multibillion-dollar content budget and allocate it to theatrical releases.
Netflix alone, still steadfast in its commitment to treating theatrical as a sop to throw at feisty actors or fussy awards-show rulemakers, risks losing out on high-level talent and top-tier cultural impact — as well as the financial rewards from a film that moves the needle on streaming.
Two years after “Godzilla vs. Kong” proved the multiplex wouldn’t go down without a fight, an old-fashioned wide release now signals seriousness in the streaming wars. Executives at the major Hollywood studios have all pointed to strong box office as contributing to streaming views.

“One Kiss” was all it took for Dua Lipa and Calvin Harris to collaborate once more. On Thursday, the songstress and the DJ released their second joint effort, “Potion” — a sexy pop-edm banger featuring a verse from Young Thug.
“It’s an honor to work with Dua and Thug again. They’re both such dynamic artists who have contributed so much to today’s musical landscape,” Harris said in a statement.
The track opens with an electric guitar solo before diving into a disco-like beat accompanying Lipa’s signature vocals.

Seal Team‘s Max Thieriot is coming back to CBS… well, behind the camera, anyway.
The network has ordered a pilot for Cal Fire, a firefighter drama co-written and executive-produced by Thieriot, TVLine has learned. The story centers on young convict Bode Donovan, who joins a firefighting program for inmates in a bid to shorten his prison sentence. The program brings him back to his hometown in Northern California, “where he and other inmates work alongside elite firefighters to extinguish massive blazes across the region,” per the official description.

This weekend sees the release of a “follow-up” film to a delightful documentary I had the pleasure of reviewing about two months ago. Yes, you read that right. This can be called a “follow-up” rather than a sequel or even a “spin-off”. The previous feature doc in question was the adoring film “fan letter” from Edgar Wright all about the fifty-year-plus musical partnership of the Mael brothers, Ron and Russell, the duo behind the rock and roll band known as Sparks (that doc’s title was the fittingly-named The Sparks Brothers). The early part of that film told of the brothers’ love of film, as they delved into the “New Wave” classics of the 60s while in college, and made some “cinema” themselves. After their music success, they hoped to branch into the movies with proposed collaborations with (most famously) Jacques Tati and Tim Burton. To the Maels’ consternation, none of them materialized,...

True story - I'd only vaguely heard of Sparks before catching Edgar Wright's documentary, The Sparks Brothers, at Sundance (read my review). I remember seeing them in 1977's Rollercoaster on TV one afternoon and thinking they had to be a fake band, with Ron Mael's toothbrush mustache and Russell's flowing locks. But real they were, and after watching the doc I fell deep down a Sparks rabbit hole. As we've been in lockdown here in Montreal, I've…...

George Segal with Ben Gazzara and Robert Vaughn during the filming of "The Bridge at Remagen" in 1968.
By Lee Pfeiffer
Actor George Segal has passed away at age 87. Segal became a rising young star in the 1960s and went on to enjoy success in both feature films and television. He made his big screen debut in "The Young Doctors" in 1961 and within a few years had appeared in "Ship of Fools" and his first starring role in "King Rat". The 1965 adaptation of James Clavell's novel found Segal as an American prisoner in a Japanese P.O.W. camp in WWII. He uses his guile and survival skills to not only stay alive but to thrive, much to disgust of British P.O.W.s who think his actions border on collaboration with the enemy. Segal's biggest break came the following year when he was cast in Mike Nichols' screen...

Tributes and remembrances began pouring in for the Oscar-nominated George Segal after his wife, Sonia Segal, confirmed the actor’s passing Tuesday at age 87.
In addition to his long résumé, Segal has been a regular on ABC’s The Goldbergs. That show’s creator, Adam F. Goldberg, was among the first to weigh in today, posting a collage of photos: Segal playing banjo, Segal dressed as a Transformer, Segal in full Batman attire, Segal with his Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
“Today we lost a legend,” wrote Goldberg. “It was a true honor being a small part of George Segal’s amazing legacy. By pure fate, I ended up casting the perfect person to play Pops. Just like my grandfather, George was a kid at heart with a magical spark.”

, Edgar Wright’s “The Sparks Brothers” is a beat-for-beat celebration of the band’s deathless creative odyssey, an irresistible invitation to join their small but devoted cult of diehard fans, and a beautifully wrapped gift to anyone who’s ever had angst in their pants about Ron and Russell Mael before. But most of all, Wright’s documentary is a gift to the Sparks brothers themselves — something these baby boomers have wanted ever since they were film-obsessed little kids in Westside Los Angeles — and we get to see them open it right before our eyes.
Under-rated, over-looked, and hugely influential all at the same time — to paraphrase one of the many stars who Wright arranges into a veritable galaxy of talking heads — Sparks has survived more than five decades in the music business due to their almost pathological inability to stagnate or write music for anyone but each other, an...

William Link, a writer and producer known for co-creating “Columbo” and “Murder, She Wrote,” died of congestive heart failure in Los Angeles on Sunday, his niece confirmed to Variety. He was 87.
Over the course of Link’s decades-long television career, he became known for working alongside screenwriter and producer Richard Levinson. The duo collaborated on a number of projects, including both “Columbo” and “Murder, She Wrote.”
Steven Spielberg, who directed the first episode of “Columbo,” paid tribute to Link on Tuesday.
“Bill’s truly good nature always inspired me to do good work for a man who, along with Dick Levinson, was a huge part of what became my own personal film school on the Universal lot,” Spielberg said in a statement. “Bill was one of my favorite and most patient teachers and, more than anything, I learned so much from him about the true anatomy of a plot. Prolific television writer-producer William Link, co-creator of classic TV series including Columbo and Murder She Wrote among others, died Sunday, December 27 of congestive heart failure in Los Angeles, his wife, Margery Nelson, told Deadline. He was 87.
Link was born in Elkins Park, Pa, a suburb of Philadelphia, on December 15, 1933.
In a career spanning more than 60 years, Link was best known for his collaboration with the late Richard Levinson. The two – who first met at the age of 14 and began collaborating almost immediately on stories, radio scripts, and dramas – saw television’s potential to capture the current scene and contribute to the national discussion about such subjects as race relations, student unrest, and gun violence.
Co-created by Link and Levinson, Columbo, starring Peter Falk as LAPD homicide detective Columbo aired on NBC from 1971 to 1978. The character and show popularized the inverted detective story format, which begins by showing the commission of the crime and its perpetrator.

Planet Zoo is the direct semi-sequel to Planet Coaster, the modern classic that was released back in 2019. More importantly, Planet Zoo is the spiritual successor to Zoo Tycoon, and many of the Frontier Developments team who worked on both Planet games are of previous Rollercoaster and Zoo Tycoon fame. With this kind of heritage, you’d expect Zoo Tycoon to be pretty good and guess what (spoilers) it is.
Planet Zoo is actually so comprehensive and complete a zoo management game that I’m not sure there will ever be another one to follow it. Assuming that you choose the campaign mode to start you off, the game begins with three Tutorial zoo’s that feature fully operational setups demonstrating just how in depth the game can be. These zoo’s have all of the basics that you would expecting, including nicely laid out habitats, various visitor and staff facilities and a decent staff setup.

The Jonas Brothers have officially kicked off their Happiness Begins tour! On Wednesday, Kevin, Joe, and Nick hit the stage at the American Airlines Arena in Miami to perform some of their greatest hits. The night was full of surprises as the brothers sang some of their most recent singles, a few of their solo songs, and some incredibly nostalgic tracks from their very first album. Honestly, it was everything we could have hoped for.
The show also included a special appearance from Sebastián Yatra, Daddy Yankee, and Natti Natasha as they sang their new Latin song, "Runaway," for the first time live. While there are bound to be even more surprises later in the tour, we can't help but obsess over all the performance videos on social media.
Wondering what to expect when you attend your concert this Summer? We've got you covered with the official tracklist from their opening night.

The Jonas Brothers kicked off the release of their new album, Happiness Begins, with a huge bash in NYC on Thursday night. The brothers teamed up with Spotify to host the Carnival of Happiness at the Greenpoint Backlot in Brooklyn, NY, and it was just as fun as it sounds. Not only was the event filled with carnival attractions like fun rides and sweet treats, but it also included some Easter eggs from the band's songs - there was a photo op to re-create the bathtub scene from the "Sucker" music video, and all the drinks were all inspired by Jonas Brothers songs (the "Rollercoaster" was my personal fave).
Of course, the best part of the night was seeing the Jonas Brothers perform live. The group performed some of their greatest hits, including "Year 3000" and "S.O.S.," and everyone in the crowd immediately turned back into screaming teenagers. Not only were...

13 Reasons Why's second season soundtrack is an eclectic mix that mirrors the harrowing stories of the talented cast. But of course, there's one song that stands out from the rest due to its upbeat tempo and message of hope: "Rollercoaster." This song is by Bleachers, the stage name for songwriter Jack Antonoff who is also the guitarist for the pop band Fun and the former lead singer for the now-defunct indie rock group Steel Train. Antonoff has written music for Taylor Swift and Sara Bareilles, so he knows how to create catchy music with substance.
"Rollercoaster" is the second track on Strange Desire (2014) and has a punk synth sound that's reminiscent of the '80s and '90s.
