Benito has officially entered the world of Gorillaz. The Puerto Rican star is featured on a new collaboration with the band called “Tormenta,” featured on the album Cracker Island that the group released Friday. As a recent Rolling Stone review put it, the song offers a deconstructed reggaeton beat “for the Mc to do backflips on.”
“Tormenta” opens with a jazzy intro and the voice of Damon Albarn as he repeats, “The sun in the storm/Someone cryin,” before Bad Bunny joins in with verses in Spanish as he asks...

Gorillaz have released their eighth album, Cracker Island. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify.
Originally announced last August alongside the release of “New Gold” — a mesmerizing single featuring Tame Impala and Bootie Brown — Cracker Island not only augments the band’s canon of inquisitive pop gems, but also shows the animated quartet collaborating with an impressive list of guests, including Bad Bunny, Stevie Nicks, Thundercat, Beck, and more. With these parts combined, the sum of the album is an exciting plunge back into the search for meaning in the modern world.
For their part, the virtual band finds itself in the perfect setting for their search. 2-D, Noodle, Russel Hobbs, and Murdoc Niccals have left their West London home base for new digs in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, where fame-lust, toxic consumerism, and the occult blend together as easily as exhaust fumes and the Angeleno air.

There are two dials at Gorillaz HQ which determine 1) how many guests will be on an album, and 2) how elaborate its broader cartoon lore will be. 2018’s The Now Now, positioned as a solo album by Damon Albarn’s “2-D” alter ego, had minimal guests and only the slightest bit of extra-textual hijinks. On the other hand, 2020’s wildly overstuffed Song Machine project, in which every track was accompanied by at least one guest and a new cartoon detailing the band’s ongoing dystopian adventures, turned both dials to 11. Every track was a single,...

"Get that damn oil off the beach." Shout Factory has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled I'm Charlie Walker, based on a true story. This hasn't hit any festivals yet, and will be playing this summer to watch. The film tells true story of how one desperate man, armed with only his charm and wits, takes on a racist San Francisco corporation in 1971. Mike Colter stars as Charlie Walker, who runs a small construction and trucking business. When two oil tankers collide off of the coast, unleashing millions of gallons of oil and spawning an immense environmental disaster, he tries his best to help clean up the coastline. The film also stars Dylan Baker, Safiya Fredericks, Mark Leslie Ford, Monica Barbaro, Steven Wiig, Emma Caulfield Ford, and Carl Lumbly. This definitely looks like a low budget film, but they made the most of it anyway and let...

Massive amounts of radioactive waste brought to the surface by oil and gas wells have overwhelmed the industry and the state and federal agencies that regulate it, according to a report released today by the prominent environmental group Natural Resources Defense Council. The waste poses “significant health threats,” including the increased risk of cancer to oil and gas workers and their families and also nearby communities.

A husky-voiced Swedish Kesha look-alike lands at Lax and walks up to the customs booth wearing a furry, multi-colored jacket that screams “look at me!” while also whispering “but not too hard.” We already suspect that she’s a porn star, or at least in Los Angeles to become one — there has to be some reason why the opening credits were soundtracked by the unmistakable sounds of performative deep-throats and flesh T-boning against bare thighs — and so we’re in on the gag when the customs agent asks if our girl is in town for business or pleasure. She waits for a beat, and then responds with the naive smile of someone who doesn’t realize she might be giving the wrong answer: “Pleasure.”

Spoiler Alert: The following article contains spoilers about Episode 3 “Now in Color” of Disney+’s WandaVision
After all the Dick Van Dyke Show and Bewitched satirical hijinks on WandaVision, the series began to deliver in a way that put fans at the edge of their seats: Wanda Maximoff delivered her twin boys, Thomas and William (Billy) at the end of episode 3.
And in Marvel lore those guys will become the Young Avengers: Wiccan and Speed. Wiccan will have the sorcery powers of his mother, and Speed, the rapid mutant talents of his late uncle, Quicksilver.
From there, the fanboy universe is prognosticating a slew of details: that big bad villain Mephisto is lurking around the corner in the WandaVision neighborhood; Easter eggs sprinkled galore throughout the series’ first three episode indicate this unseen husband being named ‘Ralph...

Bill Maher opened Friday’s Real Time with a round of applause for “a semi-peaceful transition of power.” Maher also applauded the arrival of a new administration and the comic possibilities it presents. In celebration, he spent the first 90 seconds of his monologue on Joe Biden before turning back to Donald Trump jokes. The show as a whole, however, was short on jokes and long on substance.
“It does feel like the whole Trump administration just sort of disappeared, like we lived through a fever dream,” said Vanity Fair contributing writer Peter Hamby during the mid-show roundtable. Maher agreed, comparing the current situation to the “Who Shot J.R.” episode of Dallas wherein the whole ordeal was a dream.
Guest Kamele Foster, co-host of the Fifth Column podcast, did not share those sentiments — nor did place the blame for the recent American carnage entirely at Trump’s feet.

This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Dallas and Roseanne.
When Marvel first announced that it would be creating a spinoff show for Disney+ led by MCU superheroes Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany), there was some understandable confusion from fans who weren’t quite sure how it would work. After all, WandaVision wasn’t supposed to be a prequel, and as far as we were aware post-Avengers: Infinity War, Vision was, well, very dead. Dead as a doornail. Gone before The Snap and therefore quite lost. Rip to a real one, etc.
During the closing stages of Infinity War, the Avengers – along with T’Challa and the Wakandan armies – had tried to mount a defense against the forces of Thanos while Shuri worked to extract the Mind Stone from Vision’s forehead, but she was unable to remove it before Thanos arrived.

Born in Chicago, Reilly got his start on shows like “As the World Turns” and “Dallas,” where he played talk show host and J.R. Ewing confidante Roy Ralston. Cesar Romero is the only actor to have played the Joker in a live-action movie that didn’t either win an Academy Award for becoming the Clown Prince of Crime, or already had one under their belt before they slapped on the makeup and green hair dye. Jack Nicholson had two wins from nine nominations before he threw on the purple suit for Tim Burton’s Batman, and he scored a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in the pic.
Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix, meanwhile, both scooped Oscar gold for their wildly different yet equally phenomenal work in The Dark Knight and Joker respectively, making Batman’s archenemy one of only two characters played by different actors to have both won Academy Awards after Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro’s dual turns as Vito Corleone.

There’s a lot of great new stuff coming to Netflix in January, with over 75 titles being added to the streaming giant’s library over the course of next month. Unfortunately, it’s just the way it goes, though, that we’ve got to lose some old content to get new content and a bunch of movies and TV shows will be removed from the site across January as well. Thankfully, this coming month isn’t a huge one for losses, but there’s still a decent amount that’ll be departing.
Of course, the title that most Netflix users will be missing in January actually leaves on December 31st – The Office is being removed from the service on New Year’s Eve so that it can stream exclusively on NBC’s newly activated streaming platform Peacock. The Umbrella Academy is one of Netflix’s most popular original shows, with both seasons seeing incredible viewing figures, picking up rave reviews and building a passionate fanbase. Based on a comic by Gerard Way, the series is almost a very odd take on the X-Men, depicting a family of dysfunctional superheroes trying (and failing) to stop the apocalypse.
The second season aired over the summer and Netflix confirmed a third run in November. Not only that, but famed leaker Daniel Richtman is now reporting that sources have told him that the company expects The Umbrella Academy to maintain its popularity and are actively planning a further three seasons. It’s not clear whether this takes into account the already announced third one, but it’s exciting news regardless.

According to his Twitter page, Bo McGuire has been “putting the queer in country since 1984ever.” Now, with his feature debut “Socks on Fire,” he’s putting some much overdue queer into the documentary landscape, with an anarchic, poetic and sometimes mind-blowingly surreal memoir that rakes over the coals of a very personal family feud. At its base, there is a very simple story: once his favorite relative, McGuire’s Aunt Sharon showed her true homophobic colors after the death of her mother (McGuire’s beloved Nanny) when she tried to throw her gay brother John out of the family home.
We’re used to these powerplays in glossy American dramas, all the way from “Dallas” to “Succession,” but in McGuire’s film the setting is his modest hometown of Hokes Bluff, Alabama. The casting is unusual too, with Aunt Sharon having the unusual distinction of being played by both...

Through two seasons, Netflix superhero team The Umbrella Academy hasn’t had terribly good luck in averting the apocalypse. Maybe the third time’s the charm.
Netflix has not yet confirmed the existence of The Umbrella Academy season 3 but according to a new report from Production Weekly, filming on a new season is set to begin on February 1, 2021 before wrapping up in August. That puts the third season on track for a potential mid-2022 release. In lieu of an official Netflix announcement, a Production Weekly post is the next best thing as the subscription-based trade exhaustively tracks all upcoming productions. Also included in the latest report were start dates for Loki season 2, Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8, and The Mandalorian season 3.
The Umbrella Academy season 3 was always all but a given for Netflix in the first place. According to the company’s own metrics, the darkly funny series is among the most popular shows on the service.

In February, Judith Light was in Los Angeles supporting her husband, Robert Desiderio, at a launch event for his novel “The Occurrence: A Political Thriller” when she was stopped by a woman who wanted to share how much one of Light’s roles meant to her.
“She came up to me and she said, ‘I am in a corporate job now because I watched you on “Who’s the Boss?” and I knew that women could work outside the home, and I’m teaching my daughter the same thing,’” Light recalls.

“She came up to me and she said, ‘I am in a corporate job now because I watched you on “Who’s the Boss?” and I knew that women could work outside the home, and I’m teaching my daughter the same thing,’” Light recalls.

The McConnaissance may have tapered off a little bit in recent years, but for a spell it felt like the resurgent Matthew McConaughey could do no wrong. Having spent the better part of a decade starring in a series of forgettable romantic comedies and becoming better known for taking his shirt off than his acting abilities, he made the conscious effort to tackle the most challenging roles he could find.
That resulted in an incredible hot streak of performances that saw him win widespread acclaim in the likes of The Lincoln Lawyer, Killer Joe, Mud, Magic Mike, an Academy Award winning turn in Dallas Buyers Club, The Wolf of Wall Street and Interstellar. Nobody could keep up that level of consistency forever, though, and sure enough, the critical and commercial disappointments eventually followed. In fact, this year’s The Gentlemen was the first live-action box office hit that the 50 year-old...

Just like on “Succession,” the Number One Boy got the better of Logan Roy (for now). Jeremy Strong beat his TV father Brian Cox for the Best Drama Actor Emmy on Sunday, becoming just the sixth person to topple a co-star in the category.
The “Succession” twosome were the 17th pair of co-star drama actor nominees, but winning against a co-star has proven to be difficult. The only drama actor champs who’ve managed to do it are “I Spy’s” Bill Cosby, who went 3-0 against Robert Culp from 1966-68; “St. Elsewhere’s” Ed Flanders and William Daniels, who beat each other (Flanders in 1983 and Daniels in 1985 and ’86); Dennis Franz, who trump two “NYPD Blue” partners, David Caruso (1994) and Jimmy Smits; and “This Is Us'” Sterling K. Brown, who defeated Milo Ventimiglia on their first go-around in 2017.

Exclusive: Coming off its highest-rated season in franchise history, Cmt has renewed Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team for a 15th season, premiering later this fall.
The series, which launched in 2006, continues to be a huge ratings driver for Cmt. Last summer’s Season 14 was up 23% in the P18-49 demo year-over-year in Live+3 ratings, according to Nielsen and the network.
This season will follow a group of hopefuls as they work their way through the rigorous training camp and vie for a spot on the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. In a first, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the franchise conducted world-wide auditions virtually, which the network says resulted in “one of the most diverse and talented casts to-date”, and hosted Dcc Summer Training Camp inside a “bubble,” where hopefuls lived, trained and filmed together, hoping to impress longtime coaches, Kelli Finglass and Judy Trammell.
The Dallas Cowboys will play their first home game this weekend.

This year the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony will look a little different in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting a virtual ceremony; exactly how this will be carried out will be another interesting and likely memorable part of our current times. However, there have been quite a few times the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has been challenged by an outside event affecting the ceremony, with one such event forty years ago also resulting in a largely empty auditorium – but for an entirely different reason.
An ongoing strike by members of the Screen Actors Guild resulted in a very small crowd at the 32nd gala, which was hosted by Steve Allen and Dick Clark at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on September 7, 1980. Most presenters and 51 of the 52 nominated performers opted to boycott the event, with the exception of one brave soul who chose to accept his statuette in person.

On July 31, Netflix released the anticipated second season of The Umbrella Academy. Drawing inspiration from the original comics, especially Dallas, the second season follows the Hargreeves trying to navigate their lives in the 1960s after being scattered there by Five’s time jump in the season one finale. The Umbrella Academy must unite again to stop an impending doomsday.

The following contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 2.
The ending of The Umbrella Academy season 2 upends the story’s continuity in a major way. That’s right: Jack Ruby picks up a gun to go kill Lee Harvey Oswalt.
We kid, we kid. The major development from the season 2 finale, “The End of Something”, is clearly the sudden introduction of a brand new superpowered crime-fighting team! When The Umbrella Academy arrives back at their headquarters in 2019, everything seems to be in order…until their dead father Reginald Hargreeves shows up. Not only that, but Reggie reveals something shocking. This isn’t the home of The Umbrella Academy, it’s the home of “The Sparrow Academy.”
At that moment the silhouettes of five individuals and a green cube appear on a balcony. Below them arrives the long-dead Ben Hargreeves, who is seemingly a member of this new Sparrow Academy and...

The following contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 2.
The Umbrella Academy wears its influences on its sleeve. Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s original comic and the Netflix series it was adapted into pay a great debt to properties like X-Men, Doom Patrol, and even The Royal Tenenbaums.
Now for its second season, The Umbrella Academy is even more devoted to Easter eggs, references, and many other real life and pop culture homages. This batch of episodes takes the Hargreeves family back to the early ‘60s where they encounter a whole new host of inspirations.
“There are tons,” showrunner Steve Blackman says of season 2 Easter eggs. “We specifically wanted to sit down and say, ‘Here are the Easter eggs we want to put in, let’s make a list of them.’ They’re everywhere. I think the fans will get a real kick once you start realizing what we’ve put in.

Logan Roy and his Number One Boy’s new battleground? The Emmys. Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong both nabbed Best Drama Actor nominations Tuesday for “Succession” to become the 17th pair of co-stars to be nominated together.
The two are up against Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Steve Carell (“Better Call Saul”), reigning champ Billy Porter (“Pose”) and former champ Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”).
Cox’s and Strong’s bids mark the fourth year in a row that co-stars have made the cut in this category. “This Is Us” scored nominations for Brown and Milo Ventimiglia from 2017-19, and “Westworld” fielded Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright in 2018.
Before that, “True Detective,” competing as a drama for its first season, ended a 12-year dry spell with bids for Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in 2014. “Six Feet Under” was the last show to do so prior to that in 2002 with Michael C. Hall and Peter Krause.

When “The Umbrella Academy” drops its second season on Netflix on July 31, it won’t find the Hargreeves as a united front fighting to stop the apocalypse — at least not right away. Instead, it’ll find the siblings thrown six decades back in time, separated and, in some cases, building their own lives apart from each other.
At a recent virtual junket, the cast and creator Steve Blackman previewed the second season, which was loosely inspired by the “Dallas” limited series of Gerard Way’s comic book and picks up after Five (Aidan Gallagher) throws the Hargreeves back in time to escape the apocalypse that Vanya (Ellen Page) spawned in 2019. However, Five’s attempt to save them does have its hiccups, dropping them separately in Dallas over a three-year period from 1960 to 1963. It also messes with the timeline, causing another impending doomsday and involving complications with the assassination of John F.

The world is running out of ‘60s clothing.
The Umbrella Academy costume designer Christopher Haragon shares this news as he walks through a warehouse containing capri pants, floral-print dresses, and a large muscle suit costume with the $29.99 price tag still attached. It turns out that no textile lasts forever.
“I know some people have started tearing up upholstery just to get the designs,” Haragon says.
The 1960s have never really felt that far away for pop culture. Countless movies, TV shows, and comic books have returned to the dramatically fertile ground of the turbulent decade so often that it still feels inexorably tied to the present. But time marches on—buttons fall off of shirts, tie-dye patterns fade, and moths feast on fabric. Soon enough, all the tangible sartorial ties to the ‘60s will be gone. Before they are, however, Netflix’s premier superhero series is set on putting them to good use.

Yeah, yeah, we know “Succession” has never gotten any acting nominations from an industry group, but the drama series favorite is expected to break through at the Emmys with a handful, including double bids in drama actor for Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong. If Logan Roy and his Number One Boy make the cut, they’d be the 17th duo to be shortlisted in the category.
Double drama actor nominees from the same show have been the rage in recent years with “This Is Us” snagged bids for Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia three years running (2017-19) and “Westworld” getting Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright in two years ago. So the lack of aversion is good news for “Succession,” along with the unlimited nominating slots on the ballot.

I have been very fortunate over the years to work for people who I consider to be excellent bosses – people I’ve learned from and who have helped me grow. Bosses can be some of the most nurturing individuals, but there are a few who can go over the top. Creators of series hope that theirs will be the next big “hit” and will be the show to keep us glued to our sets for years to come. However, long-running series often face the problem of the actor of a popular character wanting to leave. Do they replace that actor? Do they write the character off and if so, how? Kill them off? Have them move away? These decisions are further complicated when the actor dies, and the writers are tasked with deciding the fate of that character, while at the same time mourning a colleague and friend.

Richard Herd, an instantly recognizable character actor who recurred as Mr. Wilhelm on Seinfeld and appeared in All the President’s Men, The China Syndrome and several Star Trek projects, among many other credits, died Tuesday in Los Angeles of cancer complications. He was 87.
Herd’s death was announced by his wife, actress Patricia Crowder Herd.
Herd is probably best known to TV audiences for his role as Mr. Wilhelm on Seinfeld, George Costanza’s New York Yankees boss who in one memorable episode is recruited by a religious cult (1996’s “The Checks”) and in another (1995’s “The Hot Tub”) is convinced George is cracking under the stress of the Big Leagues. Herd appeared in 11 Seinfeld episodes during it last four seasons, including the finale.
Herd appeared as the leader of the Watergate burglars in 1976’s All the President’s Men and as the duplicitous nuclear power plant boss in 1979’s The China Syndrome.

“Real Time With Bill Maher” was off last week, and Maher returned on Friday by taking a big swing at Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. This rant, which came as part of the New Rules segment at the end of the show, was prompted by the news that Bezos is on pace to become the first-ever member of the trillionaire class.
“New rule: you can’t have so much money that my computer’s spellcheck doesn’t know what to call you. Jeff Bezos is poised to be the world’s first trillionaire, the headline says. Even my phone was like, ‘That can’t be right,'” Maher quipped. (Sidenote: the spellcheck in my web browser also doesn’t think “trillionaire” is a word.)
“We now live in an age not of innovation but of domination,” he continued. “Startups are in a 13-year slump and financing is down 22% from eight years ago because,...
