Bill Maynard based the character of Selwyn Froggitt on a real-life friend of his, Peter Wright, who lives in Maynard's home town of Sapcote, Leicestershire.
There was a 16 month gap between the broadcast of the pilot episode and the beginning of series 1. Due to several key cast changes between then the pilot wasn't rebroadcast for continuity purposes.
