From Grease in a brawler to Kindergarten Cop in a classic survival horror, movies had a habit of unexpectedly popping up in 80s and 90s videogames.
There’s long been a link between movies and videogames. There were the earliest licenced games, such as Atari’s groundbreaking Star Wars cabinet or the same company’s slightly less successful E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial console tie-in.
Then there are games that take inspiration from the themes, production design or plot points of movies; Technos coin-op Renegade, when reworked for its western release, drew on the urban malaise of Walter Hill’s 1979 movie The Warriors, for example. Then there are all the games that have borrowed from the look of the Alien franchise, which are too numerous to mention.
Every so often, though, films used to make unexpected cameos in 1980s and 90s videogames. In some instances, their appearance was so brief,...

Universal has been vindicated, thanks to the witches of Oz and the tenacity of studio chief and top NBCUniversal executive Donna Langley.
Over the Nov. 22-24 weekend, director Jon M. Chu‘s Wicked opened to an estimated $114 million domestically, the biggest box office launch of all time for a Broadway adaptation in a landslide victory, considering that the previous record holder, Into the Woods, opened to $31 million, not adjusted for inflation.
Moreover, it’s the fourth-biggest domestic opening among any musical behind three marquee Disney titles.
It couldn’t be a more welcome result for Universal, which was left badly bruised when Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper’s Cats adaptation turned into a box office debacle in 2019. The movie opened to just $6.6 million before topping out at $25.2 million domestically and $75.6 million globally. Langley and her team, however, remained steadfast in sticking with making two Wicked movies (Chu’s sequel debuts a year from now).

Something Wicked this way comes in this week’s film quiz, with 30 all-new film-related questions, some of them about witchy business…
A movie version of Wicked has been a long time coming down the yellow brick road and this week’s new release still only covers the first half of the smash-hit Broadway musical. Meanwhile, this week’s film quiz is themed around witches but there are also questions about werewolf and vampire movies, slasher-movie villains, found-footage horror… heck, it’s looking more like a Halloween quiz than some of our Halloween ones.
Once you’ve completed all three rounds of movie-related questions, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. As always, this is just for fun, but please let us know how you did in the comments (scores out of 31 this week!) and give us any other lovely feedback.

In “A Week of Hollywood Legends,” Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) are bidding off property from the estate of singer and actor Olivia Newton-John, including the black leather jacket Newton-John’s Sandy rode off into the sky in with John Travolta’s Danny in Grease. A portion of the proceeds will go towards the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, which supports plant medicine research for cancer. In August 2022, Newton-John died after a decades-long battle with breast cancer at the age of 73.

Teenage dramas have existed for as long as teens have been drumming up drama in schools and colleges. In the ’60s, there were Because They’re Young and Where the Boys Are. The ‘70s had American Graffiti, Grease, and Saturday Night Fever. The genre exploded in the ‘80s with movies like Dead Poets Society, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And the ‘90s gave us The Basketball Diaries, Rushmore, 10 Things I Hate About You, and American Pie. But I think the movie that paved the way for stuff like Gossip Girl, Young Royals, 13 Reasons Why, Elite, Class, Euphoria, Maxton Hall, Hierarchy, and Untamed Royals was the cult classic, Cruel Intentions. It had adult actors playing high schoolers. It was filled to the brim with the risque stuff. And there was a lot of backstabbing and drugs involved. Since this particular subgenre of teen dramas is all the rage now,...

Timothée Chalamet said he was advised to gain weight when he was coming up as a young actor auditioning for big movies.
“If I auditioned for ‘The Maze Runner’ or ‘Divergent,’ things of that variety that were popping when I was coming up, the feedback was always, ‘Oh, you don’t have the right body,'” Chalamet said in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “I had an agent that called me and said, ‘You got to put on weight,’ basically — not aggressively, but you know.”
Chalamet related his experience of having to find his own route in Hollywood to that of Bob Dylan during his early years in Minnesota. Chalamet is playing Dylan in the upcoming music biopic “A Complete Unknown.”
“I found my way into these very personalized movies,” Chalamet said. “For [Dylan], it was folk music. He couldn’t keep a rock and roll band because...

Scarlett Johansson once set the record straight on a moment that had fans splitting up—and not necessarily in a good way. Remember that infamous red-carpet encounter with John Travolta? The one where he leaned in for what looked like an awkwardly intense greeting? People instantly raised eyebrows, calling it creepy and uncomfortable.

But Johansson, never one to shy away from clearing the air, gave her own perspective, flipping the narrative on its head. According to her, there was more to that red-carpet moment than met the eye, and she had some sharp words for all the hasty assumptions.

If anyone had to be labeled Hollywood’s golden boy in the late 70s, it was John Travolta. From early success on Welcome Back, Kotter to his star turns in Grease, Travolta’s charm, cool-collected persona, and chops in singing and dancing made him sparkle. As much as those roles played to his specific skill sets and advantages, they left him a bit typecast as the smooth-talking, dancing heartthrob – a niche he, or for that matter anyone, couldn’t keep playing forever.
It would be, perhaps, some soul-searching that would lead to a different alley in 1981. Blow Out, a gritty thriller by Brian De Palma had Travolta taking risks. Gone were the musical numbers and dance moves, replaced by an intense role as a sound engineer caught up in a murder. Travolta’s performance was strong – so strong that years later, Quentin Tarantino reached out to him with an offer...

Pete Davidson returned to “Saturday Night Live” on Nov. 2 to appear in a rollicking sketch with his good friend and host, John Mulaney.
The sketch zeroed in on a person asking to buy milk from the cashier at the Port Authority Duane Reade, which locals would consider something to avoid. The bit then erupted into a full-cast celebration parodying several showtunes and New York City-centric topics.
The musical numbers began with a “Lion King” parody about the milk from Kenan Thompson and Ego Nwodim; the shampoo being locked up in a “Sound of Music” spoof from Marcello Hernandez and Mulaney; Bowen Yang as a twisted Greyhound bus driver to the tune of “Master of the House” from “Les Miserables”; “All the twinks arriving for the Timothée Chalamet look-alike contest,” fronted by Chloe Fineman’s impression of the actor, singing a version of “Willkommen” from “Cabaret”; mayor Eric Adams’ potentially illegal associations with Turkey,...

Director Ridley Scott gives us an exclusive on three of his planned upcoming films, including his Bee Gees biopic and Gladiator III.
Gladiator II is due out this month, but as is customary with one of filmmaking’s most prolific directors, Ridley Scott is already thinking two or more movies ahead.
When we spoke to the 86 year-old auteur in September, he told us that he’s already storyboarded and partly written Gladiator III – a second sequel that will presumably be given a greenlight quite rapidly if this autumn’s sword-and-sandal epic is a hit.
In fact, Scott began thinking about – and drawing – Gladiator III during last year’s Hollywood strikes. While much of the industry shut down as actors and writers hoisted their placards, the director found a quiet spot and started inking out his ideas. “With four months down, I just sat and prepared the next fuckin’ movie,” Scott said with a shrug.

Sabrina Carpenter celebrated Halloween early Wednesday night at her concert in Dallas, donning a variety of costumes onstage, which also included one musical surprise.
During the show at the American Airlines Center, Carpenter came out dressed as Olivia Newton-John’s Sandy character from the movie Grease and performed a rendition of that late singer’s hit from the film “Hopeless Devoted to You,” a song Carpenter has covered frequently in concert, albeit not in costume.
Carpenter also dressed up as Pinocchio’s Tinkerbell as well as a Playboy bunny during the show.

Founded in the 1950s by sci-fi author L. Ron Hubbard, the religion has always inspired intrigue and skepticism in people. As per the church’s official website, Scientology addresses the spirit. The church has maintained a significant presence in Hollywood through its Celebrity Centres.
A lot of controversy and allegations surround the celebrities who align themselves with the faith, leading to many not being open about their association with the church.
However, some have no qualms in revealing themselves as Scientology parishioners. They have even tried to proselytize people by using their popularity. Here’s a list of celebrities who have been open about their links with Scientology.

In Pulp Fiction Salary Discussed: Why John Travolta Was Paid $150,000 While Bruce Willis Got $800,000 (Photo Credit – Instagram)
When Pulp Fiction dropped in 1994, it wasn’t just the plot twists that had us all abuzz—it was the crazy salary disparity. John Travolta walked away with a mere $150,000. But Bruce Willis? He got a cool $800,000.
Let’s talk about Willis. By the time he stepped into the role of Butch Coolidge, he was already Hollywood stuff. He’d scored a Golden Globe for Moonlighting and defined action heroism with Die Hard, which grossed $143M. But, plot twist: Bruce needed a comeback like a boxer needs a second wind after a series of six cinematic flops.
Enter Quentin Tarantino and Pulp Fiction. Bruce slashed his usual $10M salary to just $800k—but it did pay off! After the film blew up, he returned to the ring, earning between $20M and $25M per flick.

Mimi Hines, the Canadian comedian and stage actress who succeeded Barbra Streisand in the Broadway production of “Funny Girl,” has died. She was 91.
Hines died of natural causes on Oct. 21 in her home in Los Vegas, according to her long-time attorney, Mark Sendroff.
Hines got her Hollywood break performing on “The Tonight Show” with her late husband Phil Ford. After she made the show’s then-host Jack Paar cry with her performance of “Till There Was You,” the pair was an instant hit. Hines and Ford went on to secure bookings on several other late-night programs and nab top billings at nightclubs around the country.
In 1965, Hines took over for Streisand in the original stage production of “Funny Girl” on Broadway, which she starred in for 18 months. Following “Funny Girl,” Hines starred in national productions of “I Do! I Do!,” “Prisoner of Second Avenue,” “Sugar Babies,” “Hello, Dolly!,” “Anything Goes,...

Mimi Hines, the delightful Canadian-born actress, singer and comedian who stepped in for Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice in the original Broadway production of Funny Girl, has died. She was 91.
Hines died Monday of natural causes at her home in Las Vegas, her friend and attorney Mark Sendroff told The Hollywood Reporter.

“One doesn’t come out of the womb wanting to be a cinematographer,” says Greig Fraser, the go-to director of photography for such helmers as Garth Davis, Matt Reeves, Denis Villeneuve and more.
Fraser has swiftly become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after cinematographers after receiving critical acclaim for his work on “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Dune: Part One, “Dune: Part Two” and “The Batman.” Variety is honoring him as a Billion Dollar Cinematographer at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

John Travolta has paid tribute to ‘Pulp Fiction’ for giving him "a second chance at a high-end career" in Hollywood. The 70-year-old actor starred as gangster Vincent Vega in Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 picture and has thanked the film for being "a next-level, upper echelon opportunity" that revived his career after a lean period following his 1970s success in 'Grease' and 'Saturday Night Fever'.In a retrospective look back at the flick in celebration of its 30th anniversary, Travolta told Variety: "The last success [I’d had] before ‘Pulp Fiction’ was the ‘Look Who’s Talking’ films, so getting the ‘Pulp’ offer was certainly a next-level, upper echelon opportunity more along the lines of the Oscar nomination-type performance of ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and ‘Blow Out’ integrity."I was one of his [Tarantino’s] favorite actors growing up on ‘Welcome Back Kotter’, ‘Saturday Night Fever’, ‘Grease’ and ‘Blow Out’, and he wanted to work with me.

A new retrospective focused on Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece "Pulp Fiction" in Variety revealed the that notorious — and disgraced — producer Harvey Weinstein had a very clear idea regarding the film's casting, and he was ultimately overruled.
Journalist Todd Gilchrist spoke to a ton of people involved with the Oscar-winning film and learned, through executive producer Danny DeVito, executive producer Michael Shamberg, and producer Lawrence Bender, that Weinstein really wanted Daniel Day-Lewis to play Vincent Vega, the role that ultimately went to John Travolta. DeVito had an overall development deal at TriStar Pictures and got final cut on his projects there. Ken Page was best known as a stage actor, with Deadline referring to him as one of Broadway’s most familiar character actors, but he did earn several film credits over the decades as well, appearing in films like Torch Song Trilogy, The Kid Who Loved Christmas, I’ll Do Anything, and Dreamgirls, as well as TV shows like Gimme a Break!, Family Matters, Touched by an Angel, and more. Page also did a good amount of voice acting work – with his most popular credit coming when he provided the voice of Oogie Boogie in the Henry Selick / Tim Burton stop-motion classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. Page would go on to voice Oogie Boogie again for the Kingdom Hearts video games, the video game The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, and the ride walk-through short Haunted Mansion Holiday. Sadly, it’s being reported that Page passed away in his sleep...

You wouldn't be able to tell by watching the finished film, but John Travolta was anything but assured on the set of "Get Shorty." Travolta's character, a Miami loan shark named Chili Palmer, was unflappable, annoyed when people threatened him, and unblinking if someone drew a gun. He never turned off the charm, always merrily in control of every situation. Without raising his voice, Chili would merely say, "I'm going to tell you the way it is." Chili was an interesting contrast to the flummoxed, fudging producers of Hollywood he found himself among in "Get Shorty."
Off-camera, though, Travolta was a wreck. The "Grease" star seems to have trouble with memorizing dialogue and reading lines correctly. Indeed, an audience of billions can attest to Travolta's propensity for flubs as, in 2014, Travolta introduced singer Idina Menzel at the Academy Awards as "the wickedly talented Adele Dazeem." It’s Sunday evening in Manhattan, and someone is working late. They’re about five feet tall and perched over a heart-shaped toilet, inside the most sensual Barbie Dreamhouse you’ve ever seen. Wearing a lacy black jumpsuit that would put Sandy from Grease to shame, they’re about to sing about an ex who wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. But first, the bathroom needs some tidying up. They nonchalantly wipe down the toilet before taking a seat. “Gross,” they mutter.

Paul Schrader, at the age of 78, is getting a bit philosophical, a trifle introspective and, if the truth be told, extremely pessimistic about the future.
The legendary former film critic turned screenwriter-director — his long list of credits includes, as screenwriter, Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1976) and Raging Bull (1980) and, as writer-director, American Gigolo (1980), First Reformed (2017) and this year’s Oh, Canada — will arrive in Tuscany this week, as a special guest of the Lucca Film Festival. On Sept. 25, he will teach a master class to university students, and the day after, on Sept. 26, he will receive a lifetime achievement award. There will also be a retrospective of his greatest films.
THR Roma caught up with Schrader in New York, just before he hopped his flight for Italy. Before dishing the dirt, and talking about the trials and tribulations of John Travolta, Schrader went all metaphysical.

The utter weirdness of Alex Cox’s remarkable debut—a document of L.A.’s hardcore punk scene that’s also an ode to its car culture, a critique of the American middle class, and a kind-of sci-fi comedy about a radioactive Chevy Malibu—would seem to preclude its existence. And yet here it is. Forty years later, Repo Man is no worse for the wear. Not so much ahead of its time as outside of it, the film’s L.A. punk particularities have broadened over the years. Its ennui has endured not just as a portrait of a certain generation of angry adolescents, but as one of angry adolescence writ large. In a way, the film’s timelessness has always been assured by Cox’s restless protagonist, Emilio Estevez’s suburban punk-cum-repossession agent Otto, who’s always seemed like a bit of a nonentity.

Barry Diller Rips “Plutocrats” Who Back Donald Trump But Refuse To Talk About His “Rotten” Character
While it’s no secret which presidential candidate Barry Diller supports, the media mogul reserves particular scorn for Donald Trump’s “plutocrat” supporters.
The former Paramount and Fox chief who now chairs Iac Corp. accused an array of top financial sector figures of embracing policies on Trump’s agenda even as they refuse to acknowledge Trump’s “rotten” character.
“I want Donald Trump pushed into the dust heap of history,” Diller said Friday at the Ft Business of Entertainment Summit. Expressing hope that Kamala Harris wins by “five to seven” percentage points, he added, “My hope is it will be a repudiation of him. I think that would be extraordinarily healthy. I think that’s the only healthy outcome.”
Almost worse than Trump himself, Diller added, are the “plutocrats” who back him even as they “refuse to talk about the character of the person.” (Diller did concede that he himself...

Screamin’ Scott Simon, who spent 52 years as the pianist of the energetic rock ’n’ roll and doo-wop group Sha Na Na, died Thursday in Ojai after a long battle with sinus cancer, his daughter Nina Simon announced. He was 75.
A member of Sha Na Na from 1970 until they quit touring in 2022, Simon sometimes played the piano with his feet as he belted out such hits as Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and Danny & the Juniors’ “At the Hop.”
Simon and Sha Na Na performed in the 1978 film adaptation of Grease as “Johnny Casino and the Gamblers,” playing six doo-wop numbers in the high school dance scenes.

“Screamin’ Scott” Simon, who played piano in the early-rock revival group Sha Na Na for more than a half-century and co-wrote the song “Sandy” that John Travolta crooned in Grease, died September 5 of sinus cancer in Ojai, CA. He was 75.
His daughter Nina Simon announced the news.

The elder Simon joined Sha Na Na in 1970, the year after its founding as a 1950s/early-’60s rock ‘n’ roll and doo-wop revivalist act and its appearance at Woodstock. He remained with the group, along with original members Donny York and Jocko Marcellino, until it disbanded in 2022. He played piano — banging out energetic covers of “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “At the Hop” and others — and was known for his signature shirt whose sleeves bore piano keys, which he often pretended to play.

It was Paul Reubens’ second turn at bat.
The actor, then 35, had already rocketed to fame as Pee-wee Herman, the bicycle-obsessed man-child from 1985’s Pee-wee’s Big Adventure — the feature debut from Tim Burton, who is back in cinemas this weekend with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
For his sophomore outing, 1988’s Big Top Pee-wee, Reubens relocated his alter ego from suburbia to a pastoral setting, where Pee-wee cared for talking animals while working on cutting-edge agricultural experiments like hot dog trees.
Burton did not return to direct; instead it was Randal Kleiser behind the camera, back at Paramount for the first time since directing the studio’s 1978 smash, Grease.

Brooke Shields was elected president of Actors’ Equity in late May, and now heads the union of more than 51,000 actors and stage managers on Broadway and nationwide.
It’s the first union role for the longtime actress, who is largely known for her on-screen roles, but has also appeared five times on Broadway.
Now, a few months in, Shields spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about why she chose to add the role, an unpaid, volunteer position, into the mix of her busy life, which includes a new business, new book and acting gigs, and her priorities for her four-year term.

Scientology has an extensive list of celebrities associated with the practice. We know the usual names: Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Elisabeth Moss are current prominent members, while some, like Leah Remini, Beck and Jason Lee, have all left for various reasons. And then there are those who were never given a chance. As it turns out, the Church of Scientology had no mercy on John Stamos.
As he recalled on Matt Friend’s Friends in High Places podcast (via EW), John Stamos remembered at first being lured into Scientology by a babe long before he got his first acting gig on General Hospital. “I was in an acting class and there was this hot girl. She said, ‘You know, we’re all meeting at this address on Hollywood Boulevard, come after [class]!’ I was working at my dad’s restaurant at the time and I said, ‘Dad I gotta, I gotta go.

Spoilers for "Deadpool & Wolverine" follow.
The soundtrack to Shawn Levy's new superhero flick "Deadpool & Wolverine," the 158th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is chock-full of sarcastic needle drops and overblown musical cues, wielded specifically to amp up the movie's irony. "Deadpool & Wolverine" opens with a violent fight scene wherein Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) murders dozens of people using the adamantium bones of the deceased Logan as weapons. On the soundtrack, *Nsync's "Bye Bye Bye" plays, adding a silly, upbeat quality to the violence.
Later in the film, Deadpool and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) will get into a knock-down, stab-happy fight in a Honda minivan, spraying their own blood all over the car's interior. As they fight, one of them smacks the radio, and "You're the One That I Want" from "Grease" plays on the soundtrack. It's a jaunty, happy tune that serves as a comedic tonal juxtaposition to the slicing and dicing.

Like its predecessors, Deadpool & Wolverine recruited some heavy-hitting songs for its soundtrack, which is fitting for the reunion of Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, who was born James Howlett.
While the trailer teased Madonna’s Like a Prayer, other anthems by groups like *Nsync and AC/DC or even the Goo Goo Dolls back action-packed and heartfelt moments in the film. Avril Lavigne has a banger in there as well, and of course, some of Hugh Jackman’s past projects creep in.
Here are all the songs in Deadpool & Wolverine:

Constructing a soundtrack album is a gentle -- and perhaps lost -- art. This author is old enough to remember the 1990s heyday of movie soundtracks, when film producers would regularly license charting pop hits, obscure deep cuts, upcoming rappers, and underappreciated indie bands to construct carefully curated and meticulously produced albums that lived happily in your friends' cars all summer. There was a time when an unsuccessful film could recoup a lot of its theatrical losses with overwhelming soundtrack record sales. See: "Dead Man on Campus."
As the music industry collapsed in the early 2000s, however, soundtrack records fell out of favor. Movie songs became mere playlists, neither arranged on a CD in any cogent order nor lending themselves toward a general thematic thrust. We '90s teens can now whine (as is our wont) that soundtrack albums are, in the '20s, rarely more than "pile of neat songs.
