In the first scene, Mamie is putting a general's star in the shoulder strap on Ike's uniform jacket. When news of the Pearl Harbor attack comes over the radio she carries the jacket upstairs to Ike. When she enters the room the jacket is on a chair in the forefront of the picture and Mamie has a shirt in her hands, which she helps Ike put on.
By the time of the German surrender, Kay Summersby (portrayed by Lee Remick) had been promoted from U.S. Army First Lieutenant to U.S. Army Captain. This was not acknowledged in dialogue nor indicated as a visual cue by a change of rank insignia on Summersby's uniform.
When Ike goes to the teletype to read an incoming wire from General Montgomery with Monty's "eating crow" apology and Monty's promise not to try to take command or to make more demands for more troops or to shill for more credit in the newspapers. Ike's collar only has three stars on it, which by that time was incorrect, because Ike had just been raised to the 5-star rank, General-of-the-Army. This was because of re-using the footage from a previous scene at the teletype receiving news from the front.
