The pilot was originally intended for cinema release in the UK.
The character of Dick Turpin was a real-life highwayman (1705-1739) who became something of a folk hero in the years after his execution on the charge of 'horse theft'. His exploits became heavily romanticized in a series of Victorian era novels which portrayed him as a lovable rascal who constantly outwitted the law with heroic exploits.
Richard O'Sullivan was 35 years old when this series started. The real Dick Turpin was executed at age 33.
