Despite being released before Meg of June Hill (1980) this is technically that film's sequel, since the stories in this takes place after that. The reason being that Meg of June Hill (1980) is edited from the first season of the Madicken (1979) TV series, which was the very first to be released.
After having directed The Brothers Lionheart (1977) Olle Hellbom felt very tired and decided to step down as director for the two Madicken films and just produce instead. Göran Graffman was chosen as the new director since Hellbom was impressed by his work on the TV series Den vita stenen (1973).

Finding environments to shoot in required a lot of work. In the end, production found a farm that suited Junibacken very well, but the house had to be rebuilt for several months to remove all modernities such as electricity lines and the like.
