Scream Factory's new double feature disc finishes off two different American-International horror series. The first picture is the last fright film made for the company by the directing and writing team of Gordon Hessler and Christopher Wicking. It's no gem, but it's a lot more interesting on a second viewing. The second is the company's final try to make that old joker H.P. Lovecraft into a filmic horror icon, like Edgar Allan Poe. It has a lot going for it, but also its own set of problems.

The Frankenstein Monster is arguably the greatest monster in all fiction. There have been a few genuinely excellent films made about him, but all too many of them are pretty bad. While the latest attempt in Victor Frankenstein falls flat, Cinelinx looks at the film history of Frankenstein to see which of them worked and which of them didn’t.

The Frankenstein Monster was the invention of 18 year old Mary Shelly (wife of poet Percy Shelly) who was vacationing in Switzerland with her husband, their close friend Lord Byron and John Polidori. Incessant rain left them housebound and reading ghost stories to each other. This led to a challenge from Byron, daring them all to create the scariest story ever told. Mary Shelly seemed outclassed by her literary companions until she heard legends of a crazy scientist named Conrad Dipple who performed illegal experiments using parts of dead bodies and electricity.

Summer is the time for superhero films but October is for ghosts and ghouls. Monsters were box-office gold long before superheroes thrived on screen and film buffs know it was the Universal Studios monsters that originated the concept of the shared universe.

Everybody’s doing it. Shared universes, I mean. It’s the ‘In’ thing to do these days. Disney, Fox and Warner Bros are doing it with their comic book characters. Transformers, Ghostbusters and Robin Hood are planning to do it with their franchises. And so are the revamped Universal Monsters. It already started with Dracula Untold, and others are to follow. Of course, it’s not the first time the Universal Monsters shared the screen together.

And that brings us to the point of this article. Since it’s Halloween time, we get into the spooky spirit of the season as Cinelinx looks back at the one that started it all…...

If Suarez is a vampire, which other classic horror monsters could have been hiding in full sight amongst football’s ranks over the years?

The world of football boasts a wide variety of characters whose looks, traits and performances resemble some of the classic antagonists in movie history – namely the Universal Monsters. The classic Universal Monsters date back to 1923 and the classic era went on (with the likes of Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Lon Chaney Jr and Bela Lugosi) until 1960, but there have been more additions to the monster roster since then.

Halloween is nigh, and that means horror movies aplenty, not that we need any more of an excuse to dust off the classics of our favorite genre. But Beyond Fest, an event taking place in La throughout this October, is making that experience interactive, bringing together some of the finest filmmakers, the best movies, and even infusing screenings with live music from the likes of Umberto, Goblin, and Alan Howarth.

Perhaps the day I was most looking forward to was this past Saturday’s “Full Moon” double feature, serving up perhaps the two best werewolf movies of all-time, right after one another. Kicking off the evening is 1981′s The Howling, followed by the movie that it (and every werewolf movie) is indebted to: Universal’s The Wolf Man, with Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, and Bela Lugosi. Warm starry nights in downtown Portland are filled with entertaining films, culinary treats, live music and spectacular city views, all atop the panoramic parking rooftop at the Hotel deLuxe (Sw 15th at Yamhill). The evenings begin at 8pm with local music and refreshments. Troma sounds a lot like trauma and without knowing how they came up with the name I can't but help think it's on purpose. After all they've spent more than thirty years making sure there was something to offend somebody in virtually every movie they've made. Maybe that's why Troma is still around thirty years later. They bring a smile to the face of anyone who likes seeing sacred cows splattered even if at the end you feel a little messy yourself.

Lloyd Kaufman has made a living out of being able to brand that particular sentiment even when Troma's movies have been truly awful. Actor Phil Carey has lost his battle with lung cancer. He was 83.Carey passed away at his home in New York on Friday, following a long struggle with the disease.

The star was best known for playing formidable business tycoon Asa Buchanan in the U.S. TV soap opera One Life To Live, first appearing on the show in 1980 before making his last appearance on 29 December.

He also appeared on the big screen, with roles in films such as This Woman Is Dangerous, Calamity Jane, Pushover and Monster.

He is survived by his wife and their two children as well as another three children from a previous marriage.

Carey's One Life to Live co-star Clint Ritchie passed away on 31 January following a brief illness, aged 70.
