The house location seen in this film was also later used in the television series Fantasy Island (1977).
The film contains real footage of elephants and other animals being killed.
Actor Rod Taylor did his own stunts when he rode a zebra in the movie. According to his official website, he had ''...convinced director Reza Badiyi to let him ride a wild zebra for a scene in which Trader Horn dupes a British officer and makes a getaway.'' The picture's official press book declared "...he insisted on riding a wild zebra for a scene in 'Trader Horn', and director Reza Badiyi finally allowed it. Not only did Taylor ride it successfully, but after several takes the zebra was tame!".
''All original footage for 'Trader Horn' was shot in Los Angeles'' according to the American Film Institute's AFI Catalog.
A lot of ''stock footage was used for most of the wildlife scenes'' according to the official [link=nm0001792 website. Much of the location footage had been originally photographed for other earlier MGM features such as Mogambo (1953), The Bushbaby (1969) and King Solomon's Mines (1950). As such, film from these pictures was used as inserts and stock footage for this mostly Hollywood studio shot production which was filmed entirely in California, USA. Screen credits still attributed the movie's filming locations to Congo, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania but the footage seen from these African nations was actually from these earlier and older pictures and not the current production.
