Take a look @ classic movies with 'gambling' as the main story focus including "The Big Town", "The Gambler", "California Split" and "Croupier":
One common trend with gambling in movies is that many of them (with the exception of Martin Scorsese's "Casino"), feature a peripheral mention of gambling, with sequences rarely comprehensive, doing little to impress everyday players.
"The Big Town" (1987), directed by Ben Bolt and Harold Becker, features a variation of the game known as 'heads up craps' where players make side bets between themselves instead of betting against the house.
Odds of the games were negotiated among the parties involved with the focus getting someone else to agree on 50-50 odds.
The film stars Matt Dillon as a successful craps shooter who moves to Chicago to become a professional player, when craps was popular before the rise of today's casino games played online.

Being a successful gambler, especially in poker, requires a certain amount of acting skill. Maintaining a calm and rational demeanor no matter if you are on a hot streak or a dry spell (and, of course maintaining a stonewall poker face) is key to making the hobby a lucrative one.
As hard as that is to do in real life, we admire those talented actors that are able to do it in front of a camera and film crew. Below is our list of the best casino, poker, and gambling movie actors.

In the decades since its premiere, The French Lieutenant’s Woman is now most commonly discussed for its placement in the extensive awards resume of its star Meryl Streep, since it was her follow-up to her Best Supporting Actress win for 1979’s Kramer vs. Kramer and would serve as netting her first nomination in a leading category (it’s also interesting to note Streep won the Golden Globe but ultimately, perhaps ironically, lost to Katharine Hepburn, the iconic performer who previously held the most nominations record). But at the time of its release, the final product was the result of a decade long ordeal, seeing many auteurs, actors, and screenwriters attempting to adapt the notoriously ‘unfilmable’ 1969 novel by John Fowles, an experiment in form termed “post-modern historical fiction.” Directed by Karel Reisz, the Czech-born British auteur a British New Wave progenitor of the realist strain of filmmaking, it remains one of his most prolific works.

Lots of moviegoers have soft spots for cinematic scuzz. Perhaps it's the inertia felt by some audience members when confronted by modern Hollywood and its sea of green-screen, but many are willing to overlook myriad flaws in exchange for a touch of grime. In the case of casino flicks, there seems to be a paucity of pulpy filth. Where, in the modern gambling movie, is the sweaty desperation of James Caan in The Gambler (1974) or the tobacco-drenched intensity of The Cincinnati Kid? The spotlessness of the Monte Carlo poker tournament in Casino Royale (2006) seems to have set the benchmark in recent years and there's the potential that it will be a fair while before grunge manages to find its way back into the casino picture.

Paramount Pictures has unveiled both the official one-sheet and red-band trailer for Rupert Wyatt's "The Gambler" starring a very lean Mark Wahlberg. William Monahan penned the script for the film which also stars Brie Larson and Jessica Lange.
A remake of the James Caan-led 1974 film, Wahlberg plays a college professor with a gambling addiction that leads him to lay his own life on the line as collateral against a loan from a gangster (Michael Kenneth Williams). The move brings him to the attention of a loan shark (John Goodman).
"The Gambler" will open in limited release on December 19th.

Mark Wahlberg plays a literature professor whose gambling addiction gets him way more than he bargained for when he gets mixed up with a bunch of mobsters. That's the set up for The Gambler -- a remake of the 1974 film starring James Caan -- and the first foul-mouthed trailer has arrived online just in time to remind you how much you love John Goodman when he gets his hands on a nice, juicy role. Warning: The following trailer is Nsfw and contains foul language. Directed by Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and starring Wahlberg, Goodman, Jessica Lange and Brie Larson, The Gambler looks like a shiny piece of badass -- sort of how you feel sitting in front of a bunch of casino chips, just waiting to risk 'em all because... f**k it. Last year Mark Wahlberg was on a roll. He showed he hadn’t lost any of his comedic chops from I Heart Huckabees in his comically sincere work in Pain & Gain and he delivered a refreshingly unshowy performance in Lone Survivor. What followed those two performances, which displayed what a wide-range he has, was Transformers: Age of Extinction, where Wahlberg played a Texan with a slippery Boston accent. After recently trying to revisit that film — which I gave up on 20 minutes into its 20 hour hour running time — it became noticeably clear that, strangely, Wahlberg isn’t really an action star. He undoubtably has the presence for those roles, but when you look at his track record in the genre — Max Payne, Planet of the Apes, and more — he never delivers the caliber of performances we know he’s capable of. Of course that kind of material generally doesn’t offer the juiciest of characters, but...

Doesn't it seem like Mark Wahlberg should have already made a gambling movie? He's made a smuggling movie, for Pete's sake. But no! The Gambler is the first gambling movie of Wahlberg's 20-year career as a film actor. How is that possible? Anyway, the film is a remake of a 1974 James Caan film. Wahlberg plays an English professor who, as you might expect, has a little bit of a gambling problem.

Did seeing Mark Wahlberg as a (pretty lame ass) inventor running around with robots and his over sexualized underage daughter in Transformers: Age of Extinction leave a bad taste in your mouth? You can either cleanse that palette by grabbing a bite at Wahlburgers, or you can watch this intense teaser trailer for the actor’s new film The Gambler. The red band teaser sets up a really promising, high-stakes drama. Director Rupert Wyatt looks to have done an amazing job on his first feature since walking away from the Planet of the Apes franchise he successfully rebooted with Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Mark Wahlberg has a few Nsfw words for John Goodman in Paramount’s first reveal of The Gambler, the remake of the 1974 drama that nabbed James Caan a Golden Globe nomination and jumpstarted screenwriter James Toback’s career. Given his reaction a few years back when the remake was announced, Toback might share the sentiment. This Gambler stars Wahlberg as a college professor struggling with a crippling gambling addiction, with Goodman, Brie Larson, Michael K. Williams and Jessica Lange rounding out the cast.

John Goodman has some words for Mark Wahlberg in the teaser for their upcoming film The Gambler, and since it's a red-band teaser, it's probably evident that the words aren't exactly pretty. (Get ready for a lot of "f-k yous" to be uttered.) "The wise man's life is based around 'f-k you,'" Goodman counsels. Wahlberg stars in Rupert Wyatt's remake of the 1974 James Caan movie, as an English professor, who has a taste for, well, gambling. Karel Reisz’s 1974 drama “The Gambler,” an autobiographical drama by James Toback, is a slow burn portrait of addiction. Every little bit literature professor Axel Freed (James Caan) makes on the Blackjack table, he sinks a few steps lower until he drowns in his melancholy reality. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” director Rupert Wyatt’s remake, swinging into the Oscar race at the tail end of the year, has a bit more bounce, channeling the Scorsese crime drama spirit with Mark Wahlberg as its troubled keystone. A totally different movie — and an intriguing departure (with plenty of cussin’ so you know it means business). The red-band trailer is murky the film’s connections to the original. Axel is now Jim Bennett, Los Angeles swaps in for New York, he still has a mom (Jessica Lange), but maybe John Goodman, lighting the screen on fire as a mob-ish boss,...

Then as we move into the winter, a slate of big, flashy blockbusters pile up, demanding our attention. So how do you cut through all this clamor when you're a mid-level thriller about a professor with a gambling addiction? You unleash a trailer like The Gambler's, full of camp appeal and f-bombs, lazily chucked by the always awesome John Goodman. A remake of the 1974 James Caan vehicle, The Gambler stars Mark Wahlberg, who has shaved off about 60 pounds since he played the conniving bodybuilder in Michael Bay's Pain & Gain. Hollywood’s approach to remakes is obviously leaves a lot to be desired. Studios usually remake or reboot whatever was a success decades ago, or in the case of the “Amazing Spider-Man” series, “hey, it worked before five years ago, maybe it’ll work now?” That’s the dartboard approach to moviemaking in Thistledown, and you can argue all you want, but the proof is right there up on the screen each year. What feels like a major missed opportunity? Think of every movie that was announced over the years with a super enticing set-up that didn’t pan out for whatever reason. Those are the movies Hollywood should really remake: movies with excellent scripts or ideas that weren’t properly executed for any number of reasons. There’s plenty of films out there that sounded like good ideas on paper, and perhaps with the right filmmaker they could be amazing.

Put on your headphones before checking out this trailer for "The Gambler," because it's got a red band for a reason.
This remake of the 1974 crime classic stars Mark Wahlberg as a college professor with a bad gambling habit. (Hey, you've gotta pay off those school loans somehow - those degrees don't come cheap.) In this trailer, Jim is getting a stern dressing down from a loan shark played by John Goodman. The crux of this advice is to get rich enough to be able to say "F**k you" to anyone who wants you to do something you don't want to do. Which is sort of the American dream, right?
This proves to be some shady advice from the looks of what happens to Jim throughout the trailer. Plus, he's got to keep all of this secret from his mom (Jessica Lange) and his girlfriend (Brie Larson).

We've been pretty much telling you for some time that Rupert Wyatt's remake of "The Gambler" would be one of the few premieres at this year's AFI Fest (along with J.C. Chandor's "A Most Violent Year"). Well, now it's official. The film will make its debut at the Dolby Theatre on Monday, Nov. 10, just over a month ahead of Paramount's planned Dec. 19 release. Can Mark Wahlberg crack a super competitive Best Actor lineup? It's going to be tough. Even the original film couldn't make headway with Oscar voters, settling for a Best Actor in a Drama nod for James Caan. But I also hear John Goodman -- who is bald in the film, if you can picture that (we've never quite seen him like this) -- might be someone to look out for in a nebulous Best Supporting Actor race. Previously announced, Chandor's film will open the fest...

Maybe it was all about settling on a date (or even some soul-searching at Paramount, which will be releasing a bunch of movies over a six-month stretch). The date: Dec. 16. The film is a remake of the 1974 James Caan drama with Mark Wahlberg in the lead. Wahlberg is pretty important to the studio as of late, anchoring the billion-dollar blockbuster "Transformers: Age of Extinction" and whatnot. He dropped a significant amount of weight for the role and could certainly become part of an already over-stuffed Best Actor converstion. But the way I hear it, John Goodman is someone to at least pay attention to in supporting, too. So take all that for what it's worth in early September. The film was...

The Horror, the Horror!
Why isn’t there a quality, poker-themed horror movie? The title, "Poker Night: Dead Man's Hand," is a bit campy, but so are many horror movies. Imagine eight college grads uniting on a remote island for a night of boozing and strip poker. The plot writes itself. One by one, the clothing layers are removed and one by one, the players get lured from the table and slaughtered in a most grizzly fashion.
At the end, there is only one person left, and she (it has to be a she) is forced to play our killer in a poker game to the death. All you can see is the killer’s eyes behind a Yoda mask (or any other mask that terrifies you), as he deals the cards on the blood-soaked table. The girl shivers, forced to face her fears while playing the most important game of her life.

Mark Wahlberg was spotted filming director Rupert Wyatt's The Gambler in downtown Los Angeles yesterday, February 3rd. The film is a remake of the 1974 movie starring James Caan as an English professor with a gambling addiction. In the original, Caan's character falls into debt to the mob for $40,000 but seems to relish the thrill of gambling against the long shot. As a professor of literature at a New York University, he is in over his head, until his mother gives him some money which he quickly tries to increase in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, the odds never allow him to win or fully recover, so his future is in the mob's hands. Brie Larson, Leland Orser, Jessica Lange, John Goodman, Emory Cohen and Michael Williams (also pictured) co-star in the Paramount release.

Adding John Goodman to any movie is a way to better pique our interest. So a tip of the hat to Paramount, which has added the consummate character actor who recently stole scenes in the Coen Brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis to their growing ensemble for the remake of The Gambler. Based on the 1974 crime drama that starred James Caan, Paul Sorvino and Lauren Hutton, The Gambler is being retooled for modern audiences with a cast that already includes Lone Survivor's Mark Wahlberg, Short Term 12's Brie Larson, American Horror Story's Jessica Lange, Boardwalk Empire's Michael K. Williams, and Travis Tope, who will be seen in Jason Reitman's Men, Women & Children, which is currently in production. The original was based on the true-life traumas of its screenwriter James Toback, centering on a literature professor whose addiction to gambling puts his personal relationships at risk while mixing...

After lighting up the small screen on three seasons of FX’s freaky horror anthology series American Horror Story, acclaimed actress Jessica Lange has landed a supporting role in a remake of the 1974 James Caan-starring drama The Gambler. The film, which is also set to star Mark Wahlberg and Brie Larson, centers on a NYC English professor (Wahlberg) with a severe gambling addiction who gets in deep with villainous gangsters and ends up on the run. Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) will helm the remake, working from a script by The Departed writer William Monahan.

Jessica Lange has signed on to play Mark Wahlberg's put-upon mother in The Gambler, according to Deadline. The movie, directed by Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Rupert Wyatt, is a remake of the 1974 film of the same name, which starred James Caan as a college professor with a gambling addiction so out of control that he steals money from his own mom (played by Jacqueline Brookes). This remake has been kicking around in a few different iterations for what feels like forever, but now it's really happening. Lange and Wahlberg, together at last.

The 1980s were undoubtedly the best years of Jessica Lange.s film career, with five of six Oscar nominations coming then, including her Best Supporting Actress win for 1982.s Tootsie. She has earned a rare cyclical success for her deliciously outlandish roles on FX.s American Horror Story for the last three years, garnering both an Emmy and a Golden Globe. She won.t be returning after the fourth season, allowing a lot more time to get back into features full force, and we can now expect to see her in Paramount.s upcoming remake of Karel Reisz.s 1974 hit The Gambler. This is one of those instances where you know when to hold .em. We can expect this remake to be pretty big, as Lange joins box office champion Mark Whalberg as his mother, according to Deadline. It will be directed by Rupert Wyatt, who rocked the box office...

It sounds like the makings of a bad joke. A renowned filmmaker (James Toback) and a famous actor (Alec Baldwin) walk into a film festival with an idea under their arm… In reality, it’s a film (though, it’s by all rights a documentary, just don’t tell this to the director). The HBO movie “Seduced & Abandoned” features James Toback—writer of “The Gambler” and “Bugsy” director of “Fingers,” “Two Girls & A Guy” and the doc “Tyson”—and Alec Baldwin, and follows them to the Cannes Film Festival (Baldwin’s first time ever) with the idea of pitching and selling their latest film ideas to financiers at the fest. The project they're selling is called “Last Tango In Tikrit,” a would-be erotic thriller set in the heart of the Iraq War with two politically-opposed journalists in the heat of it all (Neve Campbell, who starred in Toback’s 2004 film...
