Mira Nair said that the scene where Gena Rowlands' character is waiting by the bridge for her boyfriend is an homage to her scene in the John Cassavetes film where she waits by the train tracks for her children.
Perhaps as an in-joke Peter Falk whistles "This Old Man" for his children. This tune is often whistled or sung by Falk's Columbo character in many episodes.
