Vivien Heilbron insisted they write in the controversial and groundbreaking scene where she takes off all of her clothes and admires herself in the mirror. She said in a 2023 documentary about key women who had a role in shaping Scotland over the last 50 years that she had read the book, but when she read the script she realized if wasn't in it. She asked screenwriter Bill Craig why and he said he didn't think she would want to perform naked in front of a set full of men and the thousands of viewers. Heilbron admitted she didn't but felt the scene was too important a moment in her character's life not to do it. Director Moira Armstrong agreed when they told her. So they filmed it and it became the first nude scene broadcast on BBC Scotland.
The series was the first color drama produced by BBC Scotland.
A film adaptation of Sunset Song was produced and released in 2015.
