An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn...

If the events recounted in “Tread” had not occurred in real life, you might mistake any synopsis of its storyline for a treatment written by some grindhouse-cinema aficionado as a tribute to ‘70s rural-revenge thrillers. Indeed, Paul Solet’s remarkably absorbing and suspenseful documentary often plays like the dark flip side of that audience-stoking subgenre — think Jonathan Kaplan’s “White Line Fever” or Jonathan Demme’s “Fighting Mad” — in which working-class protagonists transform tools of their trade into blunt-instrument weapons while battling corrupt oppressors.

For roughly the first third of the movie’s running time, Marvin Heemeyer, a fiftysomething welder and muffler-shop owner in the small Colorado mountain town of Granby, certainly seems to fit the genre stereotype of a hard-working, straight-shooting guy who doesn’t become violent until he’s pushed too far. Director Jonathan Kaplan followed up his knockout Truck Turner with this slam-bang 1975 trucksploitation hit. Vietnam vet Jan-Michael Vincent takes over his late father’s Arizona hauling business and has to battle violent smugglers and corrupt officials. It’s a rubber-meets-the road, Capra-esque little-guy-vs.-the-system populist thriller, Walking Tall-style. Lots of great character actors on hand.

Chicago – In one of Jan-Michael Vincent’s most recent photos, taken in 2016 by photographer Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com, the ex-heart throb actor is revealed as a man who lived his life hard to the end. Vincent died last month in Asheville, North Carolina, on February 10th, 2019. He was 73.

Jan-Michael Vincent was born in Denver, and after high school in Washington state he bounced around with three years of college and a stint in the California National Guard. In 1966, he began to audition, and his rugged good looks landed him in a Robert Conrad film “The Bandits” (1967). After doing several TV and movie bit parts, he scored in the early 1970s with high profile roles in “Going Home” (1970), “The Mechanic” (1972) and in Walt Disney’s “The World’s Greatest Athlete” (1973) as the title character.

Former Hollywood heartthrob Jan-Michael Vincent, star the hit TV series, Airwolf, is revealed to have died last month.

Jan-Michael Vincent, former star of the smash 1980s TV series, Airwolf, has died, reportedly at the age of 73. It’s an occurrence that, in actuality, took place nearly a month ago – on February 10 – and we only just now learned.

According to Vincent’s death certificate, as obtained by THR, the actor passed away as a result of cardiac arrest at Mission Hospital's Memorial Campus in Asheville, North Carolina. His death caps off widely-reported struggles with drugs and alcohol, which led to a tumultuous personal life rife with permanent-injury-inducing accidents and shameful legal issues, notably connected to domestic violence. However, his downfall contrasts sharply with an auspicious early career.

A death certificate obtained by TMZ noted Vincent died of cardiac arrest while a patient at an Asheville hospital. His death had not been previously reported.

Vincent started his career in the late 1960s with guest roles in TV series including Dragnet, Lassie, Bonanza and Gunsmoke before his first feature film, 1971’s Going Home opposite Robert Mitchum and Brenda Vaccaro. Los Angelenos are aflutter with impending chaos. And, if you don’t live in Los Angeles, you probably don’t understand. (I live here and I’m not sure I fully understand.) But this weekend (July 15-17), the City of Los Angeles has gotten it in its mind to shut down the 405 Freeway, one of the central lifelines for the (frankly absurd) amount of traffic that hits Los Angeles on a daily basis. This means that, functionally, no one’s going anywhere this weekend and the entire West side of Los Angeles is going to be choked off by the cold, unrelenting hands of the Los Angeles Dot.

Naturally, this has become a bit of a cultural meme (surely confusing anyone who doesn’t live in Los Angeles) dubbed by internet pun genii as “Carmageddon.

The 1970s was a significant decade in the history of American cinema. The sometimes wild experimentation of the avant garde movement of the 1960s had pretty much disappeared by the mid 70s. The decade gave birth to the adult film industry (Deep Throat), the modern slasher film (the one-two punch of Halloween and Friday The 13th), and the Hollywood blockbuster (Jaws and later Star Wars). The exploitation film subgenre (blaxploitation, sexploitation, etc.) peaked and gave way to teen comedies and horror films. The Western was all but dead. However, in 1976 American International Pictures released a wonderfully offbeat and satisfying Western comedy into this rapidly changing marketplace, The Great Scout And Cathouse Thursday, which regrettably is Not available on DVD.

Since the earliest days of American cinema there has been a shadowy counterpart to the commercial mainstream: exploitation movies — pictures whose appeal lies in their sensational treatment and leering promotion of often lurid and prurient material. Lemmy describes the music that influences you the most as the stuff you listened to when you were 20 that knocked you out. For many, like me, that was Motörhead. Although I was nearer the age of 10 and my dad let me watch an episode of the chaotic comedy The Young Ones in which each week they would have a musical ‘guest’ where a band would play a song in the young ones’ house while all hell was breaking loose in cutaways.
