Filming took place in Spring/ Summer 1982 near the Bindon Firing Range, part of the Lulworth Ranges run by the Ministry Of Defence for training. Frustrated by several ruined takes, sound editor Ian Leiper sent an assistant over to see if they could move the exercise further away. Since this was during the Falkland Islands conflict the army were not able to accommodate a filming schedule.
Fort Zinderneuf's exterior walls were built as a three-sided set in the pit of a sand quarry near Wareham in Dorset.
