When Sam Malone showed up to visit on the original Frasier, fans got a thrill seeing old-favorite characters reunite for a one-off episode. But several sitcoms have done those types of cameos one better, casting familiar costars as entirely new characters to add a dose of barely earned nostalgia. Sometimes the ploy works and sometimes it doesn’t, as you’ll see in these five examples of classic sitcom costars who reunited on new shows.

1 Kevin James and Leah Remini

When James tried to reboot his sitcom career with Kevin Can Wait, he soon discovered he didn’t have much chemistry with his new TV wife Erinn Hayes. With little thought to public reaction, James and his producers decided “Why not have Hayes’ character die — off camera — before we start a Season Two?” That’s just what they did, enlisting James’ former TV wife, King of Queens’ Remini, to rekindle some comedy sparks.

The hit NBC sitcom, Lopez Vs Lopez, combines family comedy vibes with a touch of dramatic gravitas thanks to themes of addiction and recovery that permeate every episode. George Lopez stars as an alcoholic who is forced to move in with his estranged daughter and her fiancee, Quinten (Matt Shively), with the ensuing hijinks making for quality sitcom entertainment with an extra dose of pathos and serious moments for a somewhat more mature viewing experience.

Season 1 saw the introduction of Quinten's father, Sam, played by Stephen Tobolowsky, but for Season 3's "Lopez Vs In-Laws," Sam has backup in the form of his wife, Ruthie, played by comedy legend Vicki Lawrence. Best known for her role as Thelma Harper in the 1980s sitcom, Mama's Family, Lawrence originated that role as part of her tenure on the classic sketch comedy variety program, The Carol Burnett Show.

Apple's comedy series Palm Royale will reunite Carol Burnett with legendary comedian and her former The Carol Burnett Show and Mama's Family co-star, Vicki Lawrence, who has been cast in an undisclosed role. The two met on The Carol Burnette Show more than half a century ago and have since enjoyed a long friendship. Burnett, who plays Norma, one of the main characters in the period drama, recently spoke up about wanting Lawrence to be on the show, and asked the showrunner if they could find a role that the actor could sink her teeth into.

Al Schultz, a top CBS makeup artist for The Carol Burnett Show and several groundbreaking Norman Lear sitcoms including All in the Family and Good Times and was married to Vicki Lawrence for nearly 50 years, has died. He was 82.

His publicist said today that Schultz died June 19 at his home in Long Beach, CA, but did not give details.

Born Alvin Schultz in 1942 in Wisconsin, he moved to Los Angeles and found work in Hollywood as a camera dolly operator and grip before pivoting to become a makeup artist. He joined variety hit The Carol Burnett Show during its third season in 1969 and would work in its makeup department for more than 180 episodes through 1977.

It was there he met Lawrence, the show’s co-star and future Mama’s Family lead. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.

Earl Boen, the busy character actor best known for his stint as the criminal psychologist Peter Silberman in the Terminator film franchise, died Thursday in Hawaii, his daughter told The Hollywood Reporter. He was 81.

Ruby Harbin said her dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in November and died quietly in his sleep.

Born on Aug. 8, 1941, Boen amassed dozens of credits during his career. In 1984, he landed his most notable role as Dr. Silberman in James Cameron’s The Terminator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn. He reprised the role in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003).

One memorable scene in the first Terminator saw the character interrogate Biehn’s Kyle Reese, a freedom fighter from the future that the psychologist believed suffered from paranoid delusions. Nearly 40 years later, Biehn recalled fondly his time working with Boen on the scene.

It’s almost been one year since Betty White sadly passed away at 99. Longtime friend and “Mama’s Family” costar Vicki Lawrence, 73, remembers their great memories and the lessons Betty’s generous heart taught her through a statement to People.

Gene Perret, a three-time Emmy-winning writer on “The Carol Burnett Show” and “Three’s Company” producer, died on Nov. 15 at the age of 85 in his Westlake Village, California, home.

Perret died of liver failure, his daughter Linda said, per The Hollywood Reporter. In a separate Facebook post on Nov. 15, she wrote, “This is a post I wished I never had to write. There are so many words to describe Gene Perret — kind, talented, gracious, giving, loving, fun and not to be forgotten, funny. To many of you he was a mentor, a job he took very seriously and was very proud of, but to me he was the best Dad a girl could ask for. Today, we said good-bye to him and I’m heartbroken. I’m going to miss him but will love him forever and ever. Rip, Dad, you deserve it!”

Richard Roat, a character actor whose career stretched nearly 50 years and included a plethora of notable TV credits, has died. He was 89.

His passing, which occurred Aug. 5, was confirmed in an obituary in the Los Angeles Times. According to his IMDb page, Roat accrued 136 acting credits throughout his career, including roles on hit series such as “Seinfeld,” “Friends” and “24.” Roat also appeared in the famous episode of “The Golden Girls” as Betty White’s boyfriend who turns up dead in her bed one morning.

Bridget Hanley, star of the late ’60s TV western Here Come The Brides, died Wednesday. The 80-year-old actress had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and was living at the Motion Picture and Television Fund Wasserman Campus in Woodland Hills, according to the local paper in Edmunds, Washington, where she grew up.

Hanley played the female lead, Candy Pruitt, on ABC’s Brides from 1968-1970. Her character was the love interest of Jeremy Bolt — teen heartthrob Bobby Sherman. Bolt’s brother on the show was played by David Soul, who would soon find fame on Starsky & Hutch. The show was loosely based on Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

The actress married E. W. Swackhamer, Jr. a producer and director on Here Come the Brides, in 1969. They were together until he died in 1994.

Hanley worked throughout the ’70s and ’80s on some of the biggest shows on TV, mostly in guest-starring roles.

The Edmonds Beacon, a local paper in Washington state, said she died Wednesday of Alzheimer’s disease at the Motion Picture Country Home in Woodland Hills, CA. The paper cited a tweet from L.A.’s Theatre West that announced her death:

James Hampton, best known for his roles in “F Troop,” “Teen Wolf” and “The Longest Yard,” for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination, died Wednesday due to complications from Parkinson’s disease, his agent confirmed to Variety. He was 84.

An award-winning actor, director, writer and producer, Hampton enjoyed a career in entertainment that spanned half a century before retiring to his native Texas.

Born in Oklahoma City and raised in Dallas, he served in the Army after attending North Texas State College. Shortly after, he landed a role in the hit television series, “Gunsmoke.”

On “Gunsmoke,” he met and developed a close relationship with Burt Reynolds. The pair worked together on “The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing,” “The Longest Yard,” “W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings” and “Hustle.” Hampton also wrote and directed several episodes of Reynolds’ CBS sitcom, “Evening Shade.”

James Hampton, an actor perhaps best recognized from roles in “F Troop,” “The Longest Yard” and “Teen Wolf,” has died from complications of Parkinson’s disease, his spokesperson told TheWrap. He was 84.

Hampton, who passed away on Wednesday at his home in Texas, is survived by his wife, Mary, along with his children, James, Andrea and Frank, and his grandchildren.

Hampton was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as “Caretaker” in the original “Longest Yard.” Also from that film came a longtime friendship with co-star Burt Reynolds, which led to multiple new career opportunities, including writing, directing and producing duties on Reynolds’ “Evening Shade.” Hampton would go on to direct episodes of “Sister, Sister” and “Grace Under Fire.”

Marge Redmond, a stage and screen actress best remembered for her role as Sister Jacqueline on the 1960s sitcom “The Flying Nun,” died in February at age 95.

Her death was not made public until May, when it was announced as part of a larger in memoriam layout in the latest SAG-aftra quarterly magazine. Her cause of death has not been disclosed.

Born in 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio, Redmond began acting as a young woman in Ohio before moving on to stage roles in New York and eventually film and TV roles in Los Angeles.

Among her film roles, she appeared in “The Trouble With Angels” and the Billy Wilder film “Fortune Cookie” in 1966, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Family Plot” in 1976, and the 1993 Woody Allen film “Manhattan Murder Mystery.”

Fred Willard, best known for his roles in Best in Show, This Is Spinal Tap, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Modern Family, died of natural causes at the age of 86, according to Variety.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news my father passed away very peacefully last night at the fantastic age of 86 years old,” his daughter Hope Willard tweeted on Saturday. “He kept moving, working and making us happy until the very end. We loved him so very much! We will miss him forever.”

Willard first came into national consciousness as the sidekick to Martin Mull’s host on the nightly Fernwood 2 Night. He is well known as part of the revolving troupe of actors – including Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy – assembled by director Christopher Guest.

Roger Beatty, the five-time Emmy-winning writer of “The Carol Burnett Show,” died April 6 in his Palm Desert, California, home after losing his battle with prostate cancer. He was 87.

The Southern California native and former Coast Guard began his television career at CBS in 1956 on “The Bing Crosby Show,” which led to work on the network’s other variety shows, including “The Red Skelton Show” and “The Danny Kaye Show,” and eventually landing as an associate producer on “The Carol Burnett Show” in 1968.

There he wrote comedy sketches for Burnett and her team which included Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence and Lyle Waggoner, through the show’s last season in 1978. During his stay, he won five Emmy Awards for his comedic writing.

Bill Siegel, producer of the Emmy-winning documentary “The Trials of Muhammad Ali,” has died at the age of 55.

“Bill was an erudite, passionate and intelligent activist and independent thinker as well as being a gifted filmmaker and cherished friend,” read a statement from Kartemquin Films, which announced his death on Tuesday.
