When Sam Malone showed up to visit on the original Frasier, fans got a thrill seeing old-favorite characters reunite for a one-off episode. But several sitcoms have done those types of cameos one better, casting familiar costars as entirely new characters to add a dose of barely earned nostalgia. Sometimes the ploy works and sometimes it doesn’t, as you’ll see in these five examples of classic sitcom costars who reunited on new shows.
1 Kevin James and Leah Remini
When James tried to reboot his sitcom career with Kevin Can Wait, he soon discovered he didn’t have much chemistry with his new TV wife Erinn Hayes. With little thought to public reaction, James and his producers decided “Why not have Hayes’ character die — off camera — before we start a Season Two?” That’s just what they did, enlisting James’ former TV wife, King of Queens’ Remini, to rekindle some comedy sparks.

The hit NBC sitcom, Lopez Vs Lopez, combines family comedy vibes with a touch of dramatic gravitas thanks to themes of addiction and recovery that permeate every episode. George Lopez stars as an alcoholic who is forced to move in with his estranged daughter and her fiancee, Quinten (Matt Shively), with the ensuing hijinks making for quality sitcom entertainment with an extra dose of pathos and serious moments for a somewhat more mature viewing experience.
Season 1 saw the introduction of Quinten's father, Sam, played by Stephen Tobolowsky, but for Season 3's "Lopez Vs In-Laws," Sam has backup in the form of his wife, Ruthie, played by comedy legend Vicki Lawrence. Best known for her role as Thelma Harper in the 1980s sitcom, Mama's Family, Lawrence originated that role as part of her tenure on the classic sketch comedy variety program, The Carol Burnett Show.

Apple's comedy series Palm Royale will reunite Carol Burnett with legendary comedian and her former The Carol Burnett Show and Mama's Family co-star, Vicki Lawrence, who has been cast in an undisclosed role. The two met on The Carol Burnette Show more than half a century ago and have since enjoyed a long friendship. Burnett, who plays Norma, one of the main characters in the period drama, recently spoke up about wanting Lawrence to be on the show, and asked the showrunner if they could find a role that the actor could sink her teeth into.
While promoting Lopez v Lopez, Lawrence told Screen Rant's Zak Wojnar that Burnett lived up to her words and managed to bring her over to Palm Royale. The star teased that she "will be on season two," and she has "shot a few scenes." Though none of them was with Burnett so far,...

The classic sitcom featured an all-star line-up, and some of the Golden Girls cast had major careers before and after the show was on the air. Debuting in the fall of 1985, the series follows a group of older women who live in Miami and bond over their shared life experiences and complicated love lives. Over its seven-season run on the air, The Golden Girls not only boosted its roster of established stars like Betty White and Bea Arthur, but it also went on to be one of the most progressive TV shows of its time.
The Golden Girls broke new ground because of its portrayal of independent mature women, and the series was frequently a platform for other issues including race, class, and sexual identity. The series was a critical success, earned 68 Emmy nominations, and it found new life on streaming. The Golden Girls' short-lived sequel, The Golden Palace, kicked off a number of spinoffs,...

Vicki Lawrence was the standout star, holding Mama's Family together for all six seasons with her iconic role as "Mama" Harper. Despite initial cancellation after two seasons, Mama's Family found renewed success in syndication and continued for four more seasons. The misadventures of the Harper family kept viewers coming back for more, with the entire series available for purchase on various platforms.
It was one of the defining series of the 1980s, but some fans wonder who died from Mama's Family. Devised as a spinoff of the recurring sketch "The Family" on The Carol Burnett Show, Mama's Family further explored the world of "Mama" Harper (Vicki Lawrence) and her wacky kinfolk. Picking up right where the characters left off from their sketch origins, Mama's Family introduced more of the Harper clan and even saw the return of cast members from The Carol Burnett Show. His publicist said today that Schultz died June 19 at his home in Long Beach, CA, but did not give details.
Born Alvin Schultz in 1942 in Wisconsin, he moved to Los Angeles and found work in Hollywood as a camera dolly operator and grip before pivoting to become a makeup artist. Sketch comedies can give birth to iconic characters, leading to successful TV series like Ted Lasso and The Simpsons. Some characters, like those in Mama's Family and The Honeymooners, transition from sketches to full-fledged TV shows. Web series like Letterkenny and Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared can evolve into popular TV series with lasting impact.
A great TV show can be created in many different ways, but some only came about because of a successful comedy sketch that resulted in its characters getting their own shows. Sketch comedies have the power to introduce characters that can quickly be understood by audiences, ideally within mere moments of their arrival. Especially when a character only has a few minutes to engage people, it's impressive when a sketch manages to be so popular that it births an entire show dedicated to it.

Since its debut on CBS on September 11, 1967, there was something distinctively special about "The Carol Burnett Show." This sketch comedy series spanned 279 episodes during its initial run, featuring acclaimed performances and comedic skits that were witty, sharp, and heavy on detail. Every actor who was a part of the show slipped into the shoes of a variety of characters that still remain memorable, including Carol Burnett's Charwoman (her signature role), and her parody of silent-film actress Nora Desmond. Some sketches were parodies of classic films such as "Gone With The Wind" or "Sunset Boulevard," while others mimicked soap opera structures or commercial spoofs.
By 1977, the popularity of the show had spiked, leading to some of the outstanding sketches being re-edited into standalone programs compiled in "Carol Burnett and Friends," which mashed the best skits into half-hour episodes. While the show relied on guest stars such as Jim Nabors and...

The most common criticism levied against NBC’s Community during its chaotic and generally acclaimed six-season run was that it was all snark and no heart. It’s a complaint that’s been levied at many self-aware, pop culture-literate works by Gen Xers. But in this case, it was flat-out wrong. Threaded alongside creator Dan Harmon’s meta-sitcom-as-sitcom commentary was a poignant and gut-twisting look at loneliness and purpose that suggested that even being part of a co-dependent hot mess of a friend group was better than navigating life solo.
By the final episode, the writers had turned their half-hour sitcom about seven maladjusted people in a study group at Greendale Community College into a sandbox in which they could do everything from riff on conspiracy theories, fanboy over Ken Burns and The Wire, and eventually question the nature of reality. The series was arch and arty but goofy as well.

In June of 2022, AMC announced that the final episodes of Better Call Saul would be featuring a special guest appearance from Carol Burnett. For longtime TV fans, the announcement of such a prestigious actor in the role of new character Marion is nothing short of electrifying. Yet, despite Burnett spending decades in the film and TV industry as one of its most beloved and influential stars, chances are that this is going to be a lot of younger viewers’ first exposure to the TV legend. That’s great, because there’s no time like the present to celebrate one of the first ladies of comedy.

Betty White’s career ran through practically the entire history of television. And before White died on Dec. 31 at the age of 99, her longevity was a tribute not merely to persistence but to the willingness of a classic Hollywood talent to be versatile and to adapt.
In moving from television in the 1940s and ’50s to late-in-life media stardom on contemporary sitcoms and on “Saturday Night Live” (with some plum movie roles in between), White was perennially able to shift gears. She brought the best of an irreducible public persona — sparkling and witty, even or especially as dim or deluded characters — to a breadth of projects that offered her chances to show different sides of her talent. Her gifts recalled the best of an era of Hollywood in which charm reigned supreme; placing those gifts in a modern context provided a counterpoint that keeps fans fascinated by White practically to the century mark.

Betty White has a legacy that will live on not just through the films and television shows she starred in, but through the memories of those who knew her best. One such figure includes Vicki Lawrence, White's longtime friend and co-star on The Carol Burnett Show, Mama's Family and Eunice. "I do have some lovely stories of Betty," Lawrence said during an exclusive chat on E! News' Daily Pop, going on to reminisce about everything from the late actress' love of animals—"Betty would pick up a snake and hand it to you, 'Isn't this beautiful?'"—to the dinner parties she threw in the pair's "early Mama's Family days,"...

Betty had big plans for her big day, but now her living celebration will be a tribute instead.

At the time she got her role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1973, she had been in the business for just under 30 years with just 11 projects under her belt.
As Sue Ann Nivens, Betty showcased her impeccable comedic timing and proved that a gorgeous woman with a little nasty in her could steal the show.
