Superman Movies At The Worldwide Box Office: From Christopher Reeve To Henry Cavill ( Photo Credit – Facebook )
Superman is one of the most popular superheroes ever, and over the years, several actors have appeared in that role. He is from DC Comics. James Gunn’s Superman will feature David Corenswet as Kal El. Before him, Henry Cavill appeared in the role, and people went crazy for him. Christopher Reeves, too, appeared as Clark Kent in multiple movies, but which of the films did the best commercially? Scroll below to find out.
For the uninitiated, the character was created by Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster and debuted in the comic book Action Comics #1 in 1938. According to media reports, an independent studio, Lippert Pictures, released the first feature film, Superman and the Mole Men, starring George Reeves in 1951. Superman might be invincible, but Henry Cavill’s paycheck? Not so much. Fans of the Dcu’s Man of Steel have long debated if Cavill was seriously underpaid for donning that iconic cape. And yes, he probably was.
So, when you think Superman, you imagine sky-high paychecks, right? But Cavill’s earnings weren’t quite on the same planet as other big-name superheroes.

Sure, he pulled in millions by the end, but when you stack his numbers against his peers (or even other Supermen) it’s hard not to go, ‘that’s it?’ Let’s dive into the receipts and break down just how much Cavill made flying around in tights and why it pales in comparison to others.

Although superhero serials and TV shows had been around for decades prior, Richard Donner’s 1978 version of Superman marked the first major, studio-funded DC feature film in Hollywood. The film’s commercial and critical success led to Richard Lester’s acclaimed follow-up, Superman II, solidifying the late great Christopher Reeve as a cinematic symbol of truth, justice, and hope. Over 25 years later, the events of the ridiculous follow-ups, Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, were bypassed by Bryan Singer to accommodate Superman Returns, arguably ranking among the finest cinematic showcases for Clark Kent to prove his protective might. Sure, the movie isn’t as fun-filled or enjoyable as a children’s superhero outing should be, but, as far as restoring the luster into Superman’s cape and proving the comic book hero’s box office viability, Superman Returns did its job. At least, that’s how most critics and general moviegoers felt.

Annette O'Toole did a fantastic job playing Martha Kent in Smallville, but she raises an excellent point about one of the biggest missed opportunities of the show's run. Smallville first began airing on TV back in 2001, and from the first episode, it was clear that the show was onto something special. Instead of exploring the story of the Man of Steel, all grown up and saving the world from Metropolis, the series took a closer look at the early years for Clark Kent.
Long before donning his suit, Clark grows up in the not-so quiet town of Smallville, along with his adoring adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent. The series is a wonderful exploration of Clark Kent's life and his long journey to becoming the world's Superman, as he tries to juggle the stresses of being a teenager and a high schooler, while also developing superhuman powers. It's difficult to overstate the impact of Richard Donner's 1978 blockbuster "Superman." Much has been written about how, without Donner's film and Christopher Reeve's Superman, we wouldn't have the modern blockbuster — all of which is true. But beyond the film's effect on Hollywood and the rise of blockbuster filmmaking, "Superman" was a truly special movie for so many other reasons.
Its innovative special effects actually fulfilled the movie's promise to make audiences "believe a man can fly," while Donner's respectful treatment of the source material seemed to transcend the comic book foundations of the film itself, resulting in a work that embodied the very values that Supes himself stood for: hope, justice, truth. "Superman" also proved every naysayer wrong, demonstrating that comic book material could make for successful Hollywood fare.
In the years since that original movie and its three sequels, we've had numerous cinematic iterations of the Man of Steel.

Colin Chilvers, a pioneering, Oscar-winning Hollywood visual effects artist who created movie magic for Superman, apocalyptic scenarios and even The Who’s Tommy, died November 19 in Fort Erie, Ontario, where he lived. He was 79.
His death was first reported Wednesday by the news station 101.1 FM in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Among Chilvers’ more memorable feats were the effects that gave Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder the illusion of flying in Richard Donner’s 1978 classic Superman, work that had him share in a team Oscar for Visual Effects.
In 1986, Chilvers created the dazzling trickery that allowed Michael Jackson to defy gravity by leaning forward 45 degrees with no visible means of support in the music video for “Smooth Criminal.” Chilvers directed the video, along with various other Jackson video collections.
Chilvers’ post-Superman credits from the ’80s through the 2000s also included Superman 2 and Superman 3, Bride of Chucky, X-Men and K-19: The Widowmaker.

Hollywood visual effects pioneer Colin Chilvers, who earned a Special Achievement Academy Award in 1979 for making Christopher Reeves as Superman fly, has died. He was 79.
Chilvers died Tuesday in Fort Erie, Ontario, according to his nephew, Chris Corbould, whose own VFX credits include Inception, The Dark Knight Rises and James Bond franchise movies like No Time to Die and Spectre.
“I am forever indebted to Colin as he instigated the start of my own career in special effects when he invited me onto the set of Tommy in 1974 when I was 16 years old and inspired me to make a career in the film industry,” Corbould told The Hollywood Reporter.

Though the series aimed to modernize Superman, Smallville wasn't afraid to honor what DC media came before. The series, which followed a young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) and Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum), often brought back stars from previous Superman media for roles ranging from small to huge. These characters sometimes had significant ties to their previous parts in the Superman universe, while others are just fun to see again after years, sometimes decades.
Ironically, Smallville later became the launchpad for other DC shows and movies to follow suit. Actors Joe Morton, Alessandro Juiliani, and most notably, Amy Adams went on to star in the Dceu, while others, such as Erica Durance and Alan Ritchson, joined other DC television projects. However, Smallville was the trendsetter in this regard. Here are the biggest Superman actor cameos on Smallville:

Scott Glenn was so charmed by his “Eugene the Marine” co-star Jim Gaffigan that while filming a particularly wild fight scene, the 85-year-old modified a stunt so he didn’t accidentally kill the comedian.
“All that I was concerned with when we got to the end of this scene was making it physically as real as possible, but also as safe as possible,” Glenn says, during a Zoom conversation with Gaffigan for Variety. “For instance, I don’t know if Jim knows this, but at one point I put something called a ‘naked choke’ on him. I always made sure that my bicep was not really next to his carotid artery, because if you squeeze that thing wrong, you can very quickly halt blood going to the brain and hurt somebody permanently.”

Unlike Superman and Superman II, Superman III didn’t even bother teasing the next installment in the franchise. Really, by the time that movie’s end credits hit, did anyone even want another entry? Hadn’t the Salkinds done enough damage to the Man of Steel? And yet, as we all know, a fourth installment in the Superman series did indeed hit theaters…with a nearly unmatched thud.
If you remember from our previous instalment of What Happened to This Movie?!, Superman III was plagued with all sorts of problems both on and off the screen. So what happened this time around? Turns out, the series would be facing its greatest battles yet, with the rights being passed to another studio, its star only signing on so he could finance another movie altogether and the budget getting chopped in more than half!

Considering the first two Superman movies made over $500 million at the worldwide box office, it was absolutely no surprise that a Superman III would take flight. Besides, it was promised in the closing credits of Superman II!
With the success of Superman and its sequel, superhero movies were in the earliest iteration of franchise mode. In short: strong box office numbers guaranteed another movie, no matter how bad it could possibly turn out. And Superman III is just about as bad as it could possibly turn out, generally ranking among the worst superhero sequels ever and a prime example of what happens to a series’ reputation when things go wrong with the script, cast and, hell, even the opening credits sequence!
So, let’s go from Superman to Super-Mean to Super-Machine as we find out: What Happened to This Movie?!

Less than a year out from Superman's release, I can't stop thinking about James Gunn's title for the Big Blue Boy Scout's hypothetical crossover with Batman. This Labor Day, Gunn posted a photo of Superman, Batman, and Robin on Instagram wishing followers a "World's Finest Labor Day." Naturally, the comments turned toward the DC Studios co-ceo's work. One commenter asked an important question: "Hi Mr Gunn, in the hypothetical case that a movie starring only Superman and Batman (teaming) came out, what would you call it? Superman and Batman or Batman and Superman?"
Rather than "ranking" Superman and Batman, Gunn revealed the perfect answer: "World's Finest." Back in 1941, Batman, Robin, and Superman met for the very first time in comic form. The title of that crossover is, you guessed it, World's Finest. Since Gunn's post, I can't help but eagerly await a Superman and Batman movie that hasn't even been announced yet.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace has a rather negative reputation. It was released in 1987 and has gone down in history as one of the worst superhero movies of all time, bringing about a quiet, controversial end to the game-changing Superman movie franchise led by Christopher Reeve.
However, the infamous movie has aged rather well. Superman IV is a diamond, although it has a reputation for being rough. There are some high points that deserve to be appreciated.
Superman vs Lex Luthor
Superman and Lex Luthor are one of the most iconic hero/villain duos of all time. Lex famously faced off against Superman in Christopher Reeve's first movie, and played a much different but important role in Superman II. The character was absent from Superman III, leaving the fourth and final installment in the film series to finish their story.

Superman, Superman II, Superman III and Superman IV are becoming slightly more affordable on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray: more here.
Last year, Warner Bros released a boxset of all four Christopher Reeve-headlined Superman movies, and not for the first time. What was new though was that this set brought three of the movies to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time, and thus those who’d craved a high-def overhaul of Superman IV: The Quest For Peace could finally stop refreshing Amazon.
The set though – which included Superman, Superman II (both cuts), the wonderful Superman III (huge fan of that film) and the aforementioned Superman IV: The Quest For Peace – was only available in a posh Steelbook collection. As such, the price was north of £100 when it was released in the spring of 2023, and that’s proven to be a bit rich for many of us.

The last decade was quite bleak for Superman, as his rendition on the big screen was a major departure from the inspiring friendly figure that fans have come to love over the years. Fortunately, James Gunn is set to take the character back to its roots with the new chapter of DC. But before we head towards a more cheerful future, Gunn and DC Studios are embracing the past with Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.

Superman's movie history has a selection of quotes that have aged poorly. Some quotes have aged poorly because of the movie they take place in and their continued perception. Other quotes have aged poorly because of evolving attitudes towards Superman, and societal expectations.
Though Superman is undeniably one of the most iconic figures in pop culture, some of his movie quotes haven't aged particularly well. As the Man of Tomorrow has always proved to be the quintessential superhero, its no surprise that hes been the figure at the center of the superhero genre since its cinematic inception. From the serials of Old Hollywood to the movies of the Dceu and beyond, Superman has become a major mainstay of cinema.

Annette O'Toole's portrayal of Martha Kent in Smallville was iconic and complex, influencing Superman's journey significantly. O'Toole left the series after her 6-season contract ended. Changes in Smallville's setting and focus on Clark Kent's independence made O'Toole's departure from the series sensible.
Annette O'Toole appeared in the DC Universe more than once, but her most memorable role was as Martha Kent on Smallville where she was featured for six seasons. The character appeared in many of Smallvile's most rewatchable episodes, and certainly became one of the most iconic depictions of Superman's terrestrial mother. Starring alongside John Schnieder's Jonathan Kent, the Smallville version of Superman's adoptive mother was complicated and took its time to unveil and establish the intricacies of Martha Kent's character.

We all know who Superman is.
Superman, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster in 1938, wasn't the first superhero character in modern media, but he tends to be held up as one of the genre's central archetypes. His red wrestler's cape and red strong man's trunks, paired with his super strength and ability to defy gravity, have all become central symbols of what a superhero is, how a superhero should behave, and what a superhero looks like. Hundreds of thousands of superheroes have been invented since 1938, but many of those produced by mainstream comics outlets like Marvel or DC owe Superman a direct debt. In the same way that every on-screen Dracula is a riff on Bela Lugosi's performance in Tod Browning's 1931 movie, Superman is either being enhanced or subverted by every comic book superhero character. But he is the mainstay.

This comedy is set in a world where Lottery winners have to survive until sundown in order to claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot – anyone who kills them before that gets to claim their prize.
The Hobbit trilogy also joins the Prime Video library this month, as do 21 and 22 Jump Street, Superman I-iv, Superman Returns, Night Swim, Drive Away Dolls, and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Despite its critical and commercial success, 1983's Trading Places has not received a sequel. Star Dan Aykroyd says he has written a treatment for the project and mused that he should resubmit it. Trading Places 2 could be a stronger possibility now that the Eddie Murphy legacy sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is a hit.
The possibility of a Trading Places sequel has gotten an encouraging update from Dan Aykroyd. The original 1983 movie, which was directed by John Landis, starred Aykroyd as hustler Billy Ray Valentine opposite Eddie Murphy as executive Louis Winthorpe III, who essentially swap lives when Winthorpe is framed for a crime. The comedy's ensemble cast also included Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, Denholm Elliott, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Although the movie was both a critical and commercial success, the possible Trading Places 2 has failed to materialize in the four decades since its release.

Action Comics #1066 recreates a disturbing scene from Superman III, featuring Brainiac assimilating Lena Luthor. The creative team delivers an even more nightmarish version of the scene, emphasizing Brainiac's sinister nature. The artwork by Sandoval, Mendonca, and Sanchez brings the horrifying scene to life, evoking nostalgia and terror.
Warning: contains spoilers for Action Comics #1066!I cannot believe that DC put a new spin on a scene from Superman III that gave me nightmares as a kid. The Christopher Reeve Superman films were staples of my childhood, and my introduction to the Man of Steel. These movies were chock-full of spectacular visuals, but one from Superman III is pure nightmare fuel, and DC recreates it in horrific detail in Action Comics #1066.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is the lowest-grossing Superman movie even when adjusted for inflation, thanks to its poor critical reception. Superman III, Superman Returns, and Superman II all performed better at the box office than Superman IV: The Quest for Peace when adjusted for inflation. Man of Steel, the Dceu's reboot of Superman, holds the highest box office total for a Superman movie but comes second to 1978's Superman when adjusted for inflation.
The many Superman movies have had varying degrees of success at the box office, but how do they rank among one another when adjusted for inflation? My Adventures With Superman provides a balanced and engaging Superman vs Brainiac battle, helping addressing the villain's lack of screen time in the world of films. Brainiac's unique psychological battle with Superman in My Adventures With Superman season 2, episode 8 creates a compelling conflict, highlighting the character's potential in the DC Universe. The show's tweaks to Brainiac - seemingly making him a Kryptonian AI - offer a fresh perspective on the character.
My Adventures With Superman has brought a truly engrossing on-screen Superman vs Brainiac battle into its story, helping balance out the DC villain's lack of screentime compared to many of the Man of Steel's other major antagonists. As a hyper-intelligent alien capable of capturing entire cities and shrinking them down into part of his unethical collection, Brainiac seems like a figure who'd be a first pick when it comes to Superman shows or movies. While the late Christopher Reeve gave one too many star-studded performances throughout his lifetime, perhaps his most well-known one to date is the Superman film series. Originally helmed by Richard Donner, the first two movies in the film series were true pieces of masterworks. However, the third one wasn’t quite up to the mark and even fared the least among fans and critics.

The reasons behind this failure were many. While Donner getting replaced midway with Richard Lester was one thing that led to the script facing a tumultuous fate, what further led to the film’s downfall were certain elements of this third installment. One of these troublesome elements was Richard Pryor’s casting in it as Gus Gorman, as Reeve himself admitted in his autobiography.

James Gunn’s Superman has added Will Reeve, son of the late Superman star Christopher Reeve, in a cameo role, according to local reporting out of Cleveland, where production is currently in motion.
While reps for Warner Bros and DC could not be reached for comment, the younger Reeve will reportedly be playing a TV reporter, which is fitting given his real-world work as a correspondent for ABC News.
Reeve’s father Christopher is indelibly linked to the Superman franchise, having become the definitive portrayal of the iconic superhero for an entire generation. His relationship with the franchise began in 1978, when he was cast as the titular character in Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie, and he went on to don the cape in three sequels between 1980 and 1987: Superman II, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

DC has an uneven history when it comes to casting its superheroes and villains in movies But even in otherwise forgettable DC movies, some actors shine The likes of Jim Carrey, Margot Robbie, and Halle Berry have put in performances better than the films they starred in
Throughout the DC Universes history of film adaptations, there have been several instances of excellent casting choices that were perhaps the only good decisions in otherwise poor films. Given the cultural impact and visually spectacular nature of the genre, it is no surprise that DCs various properties lend themselves well to film, with theatrical movies and film serials bringing the comic source material to the realm of live-action for decades. While many of DCs films have had a winning combination of compelling storytelling and actors, others may only be remembered for the latter.

A new documentary exploring the life of Superman actor Christopher Reeve is due to be released in cinemas this November. More on the film below.
Warner Bros is bringing Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve story to UK cinemas from 1st November. Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, the film looks at Reeve’s career and life, especially after the severe accident that left the actor a quadriplegic.
The documentary will include not just never-before-seen material and Reeve’s home movies, but interviews with his colleagues and friends.
Reeve starred in four Superman films and many still consider him the definitive Man of Steel. He first appeared in 1978’s Superman, which was followed by three sequels. This was decades before Marvel Studios, so while Superman wasn’t the first comic book movie, there wasn’t really a blueprint for how to make one.

Brainiac is a thrilling supervillain in My Adventures with Superman, where he's an unstoppable force that cannot be bargained or reasoned with. Despite his long comic book history and previous attempts to bring him to the big screen, Brainiac hasn't appeared in a live-action Superman movie yet. James Gunn's Superman could link its antagonists to Brainiac, who could arrive to conquer Earth in a future Dcu sequel.
My Adventures with Superman proves how much every live-action Superman movie has wasted an iconic DC supervillain, and it shows how the Dcu's Superman sequels can use him. The animated series My Adventures with Superman presents a fresh take on Superman's DC lore with a focus on Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen's early stories together. Since the dawn of Superman’s cinematic journey, starting with Christopher Reeve, the iconic DC Comics character, has seen a revolving door of actors donning the superhero suit. Steel is the lowest-earning DC movie ever, making only $1.8 million worldwide on a $16 million budget. As Superman's most virtuous successor, DC Comics' John Henry Irons has plenty of potential for a modern reboot. Nowadays, lesser-known comic book characters have more opportunities to shine than ever before, and Steel could be a star in James Gunn's Dcu.
Enough time has passed since Steel's abysmal release to warrant another DC movie attempt. From 1951's Superman and the Mole Men to Tim Burton's Batman, Richard Donner's Superman, and Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, DC movies released before the Dceu and the Dcu mostly focused on the company's two most famous superheroes, Batman and Superman. Some exceptions to this rule were 1982's Swamp Thing and its 1989 sequel The Return of Swamp Thing, as well as 2005's Constantine, 2010's Jonah Hex, and 2011's Green Lantern.

There is yet another Superman reboot on the horizon, this time courtesy of James Gunn and Peter Safran, and much of it is being kept under wraps. This is, dare I say, a good thing, because the last thing we need is yet another troubled Superman production. Despite the character's enduring cinematic legacy, almost none of his cinematic solo outings can be discussed without their lingering baggage: creative infighting, script leaks, casting rumor mills, and even the occasional director's cut long after release. For a hero that is seemingly impenetrable, the Man of Steel sure has taken a beating in development hell.

"The Godfather Part III," "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," "Jaws 3-D," "Superman III" ... there are tons of examples of film trilogies that feature a dramatic drop in quality in their third entries. "Beverly Hills Cop III" definitely belongs on that list; the 1994 stinker, directed by John Landis, plopped Eddie Murphy's beloved fish-out-of-water Detroit cop character Axel Foley back in Beverly Hills, but this time, it takes place largely in a ... theme park. Thanks to scripting issues and scheduling problems, the film also broke up the beloved trio of Murphy, John Ashton, and Judge Reinhold, the latter of whom play Taggart and Rosewood, the Beverly Hills police officers who go from being Axel's pesky babysitters in the first movie to lifelong pals and de facto partners in the second. Ashton dodged a bullet by not appearing in the third film at all, and that movie's lousy script didn't do...

Wes Craven almost directed Superman IV, but left due to creative differences with Christopher Reeve. Craven's dark sensibilities could have revitalized the Superman character and offered a unique take. If Craven had directed Superman IV, the film might have been darker or satirical in tone.
Wes Craven is widely revered as a horror auteur, but the Nightmare on Elm Street director could have once helmed a DC project like Superman in the 1980s. Even if he actually took on the project, this wouldnt have been Cravens first comic book film. Before being considered for a live-action Superman movie, Craven had already directed the 1982 cult classic Swamp Thing. Based on the DC comic series of the same name, Cravens superhero movie initially polarized critics but became a major success on home video and cable, and even spawned the 1989 sequel The Return of Swamp Thing.

Brainiac debuts with an army of drones in Action Comics #1064, increasing his threat level for a potential movie adaptation. The "House of Brainiac" storyline kicks off, featuring a chaotic and unpredictable attack from Brainiac's drones alongside deadly Czarnians. The new attack style catches Superman and his allies off guard, making Brainiac more dangerous and unpredictable than ever.
Warning: Spoilers for Action Comics #1064!More than 60 years after he debuted in the comics, Hollywood may finally be ready to bring Brainiac, one of Superman's biggest enemies, to the big screen. There have been numerous instances where Warner Bros. nearly adapted Brainiac for the movies, most notably Richard Donner's original vision for Superman III (which itself was adapted to the comics). Alas, to this day, nothing has come to fruition.
As difficult as Brainiac has been to adapt for movies, DC Comics may have given the Superman villain exactly what he needs...

Man of Steel was the movie that propelled Henry Cavill to global popularity, but even though he nailed the role of Superman/Clark Kent, he could not have done some of the emotional scenes without the help of his costars. The actor credits veteran stars Diane Lane and Kevin Costner for helping him out.

The pair portrayed Jonathan and Martha Kent, the adoptive parents of Superman. As someone who has been in the industry longer than Cavill, they understand the difficulty of delivering tricky scenes, so they were both ready to assist the younger star.

Superman’s future looks considerably brighter as James Gunn prepares the new version of the DC Universe. Further, even Jack Quaid’s 2023 animated TV series My Adventures With Superman, featured the superhero as a heartfelt and charming one. To be specific, ever since the end of Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel era, the fan-favorite character has witnessed bright and positive days.
Jack Quaid as Hughie Campbell in The Boys
The grim and gritty Superman is now considered a thing of the past. With James Gunn promising to bring a more hopeful Kryptonian, Henry Cavill’s gritty version is now history. However, despite starring as the Last Son of Krypton in the PG-rated 2023 animated TV series, Jack Quaid offered his rare support to Cavill’s grim version of Kal-El. Although he preferred starring as the positive and proactive version, he has nothing against the darker versions of Superman.
