Joseph Bottoms was asked to audition for Mack, but once he read the script, he decided he wanted to read for T.J. Luther. He wore a black suit, carried a bible and gave a zealous audition, but ultimately he ended up with the role of Mack.
Thomas Thompson signed the deal to adapt his novel and produce the mini-series, but he passed away a few months later, so William Hanley was brought in to pen the script.
