Because formulaic sitcoms are typically meant to be consumed as quickly digested standalone episodes, they do not often deal with the heaviness of death. When they do acknowledge the ultimate bummer, it's usually because their hand has been forced by powers beyond the writers' control, like a combative John Amos getting fired by the producers of "Good Times" or Nicholas Colasanto dying after Season 3 of "Cheers."
This makes the conundrum facing writers who work within the "Big Bang Theory" universe particularly interesting. During the sitcom's initial 12-season run, its creatives had ample time to fill in bits and pieces of every character's backstory. This gave the likes of Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Penny (Kaley Cuoco), and Howard (Simon Helberg) a little more depth while also opening up narrative avenues for the writers to explore as the immensely popular series kept getting renewed.

On "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) served as the first officer on board the U.S.S. Enterprise-d. Unlike the taciturn and serious Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), Commander Riker was gregarious and approachable. He won over his crew's loyalty by being friendly, open and, in the words of a visiting tactician, jocular. He was also sold as the show's central heartthrob, as he was tall, trim, and handsome.
When "Next Generation" began in 1987, Frakes was already a supporting TV staple, having appeared on shows like "The Doctors," "Charlie's Angels," "Fantasy Island," "Hill Street Blues," "Highway to Heaven," and a dozen others. His highest-profile TV gig was playing a character named Damon Ross in ten episodes of "Falcon Crest." He was never a leading man, but he knew the business well.

Even if you've never seen "All in the Family," there's a high probability that you're at least somewhat familiar with the character of Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor), his well-meaning albeit shrill wife Edith (Jean Stapleton), and his constant conflict as a conservative patriarch against a progressively evolving world. If that sounds like the set-up for every family sitcom ever made, it's because, well, it is. "All in the Family" is one of the most influential TV shows in history, and that's not even factoring in the web of spin-offs it inspired like "The Jeffersons," "Maude," "Gloria, "704 Hauser,' "Good Times," and "Archie Bunker's Place."
The latter was a direct continuation of "All in the Family," set primarily in the neighborhood tavern purchased by Archie in the eighth season of the flagship sitcom. "Archie Bunker's Place" starts when he takes in a Jewish business partner named Murray Klein after co-owner...

2004 was a notable year for television viewers. “Friends” wrapped up its 10-year run; Ken Jennings had his first winning streak on “Jeopardy!”; Illinois senator Barack Obama made a splash with a keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention; new series “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives” became obsessions. And the news was constantly filled with stories from the Iraq war.

Heartbreak comes frequently for Friday the 13th fans. The franchise has had a rough ride over the last couple decades, getting bogged down in legal issues and creative false stars. We get a video game, then the rug is pulled out from under it when it’s just getting started. A movie almost happens, then gets scrapped just weeks before filming was scheduled to begin. The Crystal Lake TV show was just a couple months from filming, then the showrunner gets fired. But worse than all of that is the fact that we’re in a time when actors from our beloved films are passing away very often. Just last month, we lost Erich Anderson, who was in the cast of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. Now Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI director Tom McLoughlin has broken the news that Whitney Rydbeck, who played the ill-fated paintball player Roy in his film,...

Shannen Doherty, who starred on Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed before exiting both Aaron Spelling-produced shows amid conflicts with co-workers, has lost her long battle with cancer. She was 53.
Doherty died Saturday. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015; after treatment and several surgeries, she announced in April 2017 that she was in remission. In February 2020, she tearfully revealed on Good Morning America, “I’m stage 4 — my cancer came back,” then said in June 2023 that cancer had spread to her brain.
“I definitely have days where I say, ‘Why me?’ And then I go, ‘Well, why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this?’ None of us do,” she said.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” publicist Leslie Sloane said in a statement to People.

The Good Doctor is finally back, but spoilers suggest a silly story as the series enters the final season's home stretch.
Shaun and Jordan treat a woman with renal failure... and a potential donor who may have a serious mental condition.
The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 7 spoilers point to an episode that could be great but is more likely to be ridiculous. Considering how close we are to the end of the series' run, this is not great news!
ABC hasn't released much info yet, but the spoiler video and description suggest that the episode will center around a man who thinks he is Jesus.
This is one tired TV trope I could do without. Television is full of pseudo-Jesuses who may or may not be the real thing and skeptical people who realize that they've come in contact with the Messiah Himself by the end of the hour.

Wil Wheaton landed his first professional acting gig in 1981, appearing in the TV movie "A Long Way Home." He was nine years old. Wheaton was impressive enough to become one of Hollywood's more in-demand child actors, and the next five years of his life were immensely busy. He appeared in films like "The Defiant Ones" and "The Last Starfighter," and TV shows like "Highway to Heaven," "Family Ties," and "St. Elsewhere." It was nothing but an upward arc for the young performer.
Wheaton's first leading role came in 1986 with the release of Rob Reiner's 1950s nostalgia piece "Stand By Me," an adaptation of the Stephen King novella "The Body." In "Stand By Me," Wheaton played 12-year-old Gordie Lachance, a kid smarting from the recent death of his older brother and the familial resentment it caused. Two of today's hottest shows -- Tracker and Reacher -- are keeping the tradition of the "traveling stranger" alive and well by providing comfort viewing with a kick.

Miracles are rare in the 21st century, but watch pretty much any episode of The Chosen and they are bountiful. But the biggest miracle of all is perhaps the fact that a historical drama centered around Jesus of Nazareth (a warm and welcoming Jonathan Roumie), set in 1st century Galilee as He preaches, gains followers (and enemies) and, on occasion, raises the dead and walks on water, has built a passionate legion of faithful viewers. How did a crowdfunded production become a heavenly international sensation? The holy cards were stacked against The Chosen from the start. Faith-based television is historically hit-or-miss. The Academy Award-winning 1956 classic The Ten Commandments, which has aired on ABC nearly every Easter season since 1973, regularly reaps solid viewership. But in terms of scripted TV, for every spiritual success (think Highway to Heaven and Touched by an Angel), there are just as many failures (anyone remember ABC...

Landing your dream job doesn’t always turn out to be good, as director Christopher Landon suggested on X today, announcing that he’s quit Scream 7. Indeed, the director didn’t mince words, writing that “it was a dream job that turned into a nightmare.” The director is likely referring to the myriad behind-the-scenes issues that seem to be prematurely killing what initially came off as a promising relaunch for the venerable franchise. Back in November, it was announced that breakout star Melissa Barrera, who was leading the franchise, had been fired due to social media posts in the wake of the Israeli-Hamas war that were deemed anti-semitic by some.
Landon, in a staggering honest post to X, initially made his displeasure known right then and there, writing, “This is my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.“ Only days later, it was announced...

This month has been full of sad reports of celebrity passings… and unfortunately, today is no different. It has been brought to our attention that Lara Parker, best known for starring in the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows and the 1975 horror classic Race with the Devil, has passed away at the age of 84. Her daughter confirmed to Variety that she died in her sleep at her home in the Topanga Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles on October 12th.
If you’re not familiar with Parker’s work on Dark Shadows, Variety has the information: “From 1967 to 1971, the Memphis native starred in Dark Shadows as the central antagonist Angelique Bouchard. Set in the fictional setting of Collinsport, Maine, the series follows the town’s founding family, the Collins family. In the show, Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) spurns the besotted Angelique after a brief dalliance with her, unaware that she is a witch.

One of SXSW 2023's most interesting midnight films was an indie movie called "Late Night with the Devil," which is set in the 1970s and takes place almost entirely during the live taping of a late night talk show's big Halloween special. This special brings in hypnotists, fortune tellers, and a young girl who is believed to be (and most definitely is) possessed. The host of this talk show is Mr. Jack Delroy, an ambitious and complicated man who is really good at his job, but will never be as popular as the Johnny Carsons of his time.
Beloved character actor David Dastmalchian plays Jack Delroy. You know him as Polka Dot Man in James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad," and from his work in everything from "Dune" to "The Dark Knight," but now he gets the chance to take center stage, playing this late night talk show host who...

Bonanza and its cast members quickly became a fan favorites when the show aired on September 12, 1959. One of NBC‘s longest-running western TV series went on for 14 seasons and over 430 episodes. Although the stars of the series became popular, the music, specifically the Bonanza theme song, stole the show.
Its twangy rhythm distinctly marked the opening credits. While the tune changed throughout the 14 seasons the show aired, it was always recognizable.

Christopher Landon has quietly established himself as one of the most original voices in the horror genre. Adopting a slightly campy, fun-loving approach, Landon wrote and directed a series of movies for Blumhouse that are beloved by fans: Happy Death Day and its sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, and the underrated Freaky. Now, working with a much bigger budget, Landon’s been able to stretch out with his latest film for Netflix, We Have a Ghost, which stars David Harbour as a ghost haunting a house owned by Anthony Mackie and his family.
Unlike most other haunted house movies, Harbour’s silent ghost, Ernest, has a heart of gold and becomes BFFs with Jahi Winston’s Kevin, the family’s long-ignored son who comes into his own, protecting Ernest from his somewhat opportunistic father. Eventually, Kevin and Ernest try to unravel the amnesia-stricken ghost’s past in a family adventure...

Paul Walker enjoyed a lengthy career in Hollywood that carried him through various roles in several unique movies before his unfortunate death in 2013 at just 40 years old. Fans likely remember him best as Brian O'Conner in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, but the talented and handsome actor also appeared in critical hits such as "Pleasantville," "Joy Ride," and Clint Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers," and served as executive producer on the films "Vehicle 19," "Hours," and "Pawn Shop Chronicles." He even enjoyed a guest spot on National Geographic's "Expedition Great White" in 2009.
In his youth, Walker popped up in a variety of high-profile TV shows, among them "Highway to Heaven," "Charles in Charge," "Who's the Boss," and "Touched by an Angel," before making the leap to schlocky B-movie horror films such as "Tammy and the Rex," opposite Denise Richards, in which his character's brain somehow lands inside a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
