Although there aren't a ton of new releases on DVD or Blu-ray this week, the good news is we're getting quality over quantity. The biggest release of the week has got to be X-Men: First Class (which isn't actually out until Friday), but Joe Wright's Hanna and the Will Ferrell dramedy Everything Must Go are currently on store shelves as we speak. There are also plenty of TV releases including new seasons of Fringe and a trio of NBC comedies (The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Community), plus some great Blu-ray catalogue titles including Scarface, United 93, Straw Dogs, and a Scream Five-Film Set that somehow does not yet include Scream 4. As if that wasn't enough, Airwolf: The Movie also hits stores today! So what are you buying or renting this week? Will you be springing for the $699 version of Scarface? In 1984 the Cold War continued to dominate the headlines. Soviet-American relations remained tense and films such as Wargames and Red Dawn reflected the mood of the time. On television another war was raging, a war between two heavily armed helicopters. One was a top secret military experiment, the other a state of the art crime fighting police chopper. Airwolf and Blue Thunder were so similar that only one could survive in the ratings war.

Blue Thunder had an advantage; the brand had already been established the year before in director John Badham’s feature film of the same name starring Roy Scheider and Malcolm McDowell. Scheider played police pilot Frank Murphy assigned to patrol the skies of La in experimental helicopter, Blue Thunder. The film was a solid action thriller and fared well enough at the box office to warrant a spin-off television series of its own on the ABC network.

Fabulous Films have announced the UK DVD and Blu Ray release of Airwolf: The Movie on February 21st 28th 2011 and, for the first time since the early days of VHS, this release features the 18 certificated unedited high action original pilot movie.

Character actor John Davis Chandler made his film debut as the sniveling psychotic gangster in the title role of 1961’s Mad Dog Coll. Over the next three decades he appeared in numerous films and television productions, often typecast as weasely villains in western and crime productions. He was the crazed Acid in the 1968 exploitation film The Hooked Generation, a shark poacher in Mako: The Jaws of Death (1976), and a vicious pot farmer in Whiskey Mountain(1977).

Chandler was born in Hinton, West Virginia, on January 28, 1937. He appeared frequently in films and television from the early 1960s. His film credits include Sam Peckinpah’s Ride the High Country (1962) as Jimmy Hammond, Major Dundee (1965), the werewolf tele-film Moon of the Wolf (1972) with Bradford Dillman and David Janssen, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Capone (1974) as gangster Hymie Weiss, The Outlaw Josie Wales (1976) with Clint Eastwood, Chesty Anderson, Usn (1976), the horror...
