Based on prominent Assamese novelist Dr Bhabendranath Saikia's novel named Antareep, Agnisnan is quite a progressive themed movie for the times it was released in. Set in the backdrop of 1980's rural Assam, the story gives an overview of the cultural and socio-economic scenario of that time. However, the master thread of the story weaves around a female character who challenges the decision of remarriage by her husband and takes a firm and bold stride to avenge her husband's infidelity. Through its female protagonist the movie portrays the gender disparity in social and economic aspects of those times and how she stands up for her rights.
