When Andrew Davis directed Chuck Norris in “Code of Silence” nearly 40 years ago, he established the template for the rest of his career: using the action genre to explore ideas he cared about.
In the case of “Code of Silence,” that meant a deep dive into Chicago racial tensions and the ethical complexities of police work. Davis’ skill at staging and shooting kinetic suspense grabbed audiences in that film and the terrific thrillers that followed, but what really separated him from his peers was the elegant integration of his own social conscience into the material. Whether the subject matter was the threat of nuclear proliferation in “The Package,” the CIA’s complicity in the international drug trade in “Above the Law” (Steven Seagal‘s first and easily best movie), or the moral and psychological cost of vengeance in “Collateral Damage,” Davis’ work has always been as thoughtful as it is dynamic.

This July, beat the heat with the latest additions at Prime Video and Freevee!
It’s a light month for original series, films, and specials as we head into the summer lull, but there is still plenty to watch throughout the month: over 140 classic films between the two Amazon streamers will be added this month, from horrors such as the genre-changing “The Silence Of The Lambs” and last year’s newest “Evil Dead” franchise installment “Evil Dead Rise,” the first five films of the “Rocky” franchise, and comedies like “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Animal House,” “13 Going On 30,” and much, much more.
But after the majority of the film load drops on July 1, don’t forget to head back to the services’ additions throughout the month, including Season 2 of the critically acclaimed “Troppo,” the new “Legally Blonde“-like comedy “Space Cadet,” and a new documentary from award-winning documentary filmmaker Dawn Porter,...

Chicago – It was another city in another time when Andrew Davis directed his first film “Stony Island” in 1970s Chicago. The film was released in 1978 to acclaim, but faded into the mist of cinema. Andrew Davis is back in his hometown to introduce “Stony Island” at the Gene Siskel Film Center on Friday, November 17th, 2023. For tickets and info, click Stony Island.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Lovingly filmed on the gritty 1970s streets in the Chicago of Andy Davis, the film features his brother Richard Davis as Ritchie, a white boy guitarist trying to break into a Southside rhythm and blues band that cooks with its own brand of Windy City soul. Based a bit on his brother’s actual circumstances, the film features actual singers and players of the era, including a magnificent performance by Gene Barge as Percy Price, the centerpiece cat in the story who ends up in a fate of celebration.

Warner Bros – circa 1986. A bunch of powerful, suit-wearing studio execs are summoned to a studio lunch like no other. They’re set to observe an Aikido demonstration by a superstar trainer named Steven Seagal, previously known as the fight choreographer who broke Sean Connery’s wrist while training him for Never Say Never Again. By the end of the demonstration, mangled stunt men lie on the floor while a blood-stained Steven Seagal walks away with a movie deal that – unbeknownst to all – will establish him as perhaps the hottest action star of the early nineties, only for his career to collapse under the weight of his own ego eventually. But, in the early days, the sky was the limit for Seagal, and his first movie, Above the Law, is an impressive big-screen introduction to one of the most enigmatic movie stars of his time.

Movie lovers know Steven Seagal for his rise to fame through the ’80s and ’90s as a B-movie action star. With hits like Under Siege, Above the Law, and Marked for Death, fans know him well. Unfortunately, Seagal has a history of behavior issues on set. Here’s what one director said about Seagal being a “pain in the neck” to work with.
Director Andrew Davis said Steven Seagal was a ‘pain in the neck’
Director Andrew Davis worked with Steven Seagal for Seagal’s 1988 debut, Above the Law. The director and actor worked together four years later in 1992’s Under Siege. Before Seagal was cast in Above the Law, he worked as a martial arts instructor in Hollywood. Michael Ovitz, an agent who was also Seagal’s student then, thought Seagal would be ideally suited for the leading role.

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

I have Quentin Tarantino to thank for my love of Henry Silva. Many, many moons ago, Tarantino would come to Austin and screen his personal collection of 16mm and 35mm prints of his favorite films, all to support the Austin Film Society. If it wasn't for seeing those obscure movies from the '50s, '60s, and '70s with Tarantino introducing them all, like the most excitable film professor ever, I probably wouldn't have discovered just how much of a badass Henry Silva was, most likely only recognizing him from the original "The Manchurian Candidate" or maybe as one of the villains in "Dick Tracy."
As we recognize his contribution to the cinematic arts in the wake of his passing at the nice old age of 94, it's probably best to state up front that Silva was a ruthless presence on-screen. He just looked like a killer and that inherent...

Henry Silva, an actor with a striking look who often played villains and had credits in hundreds of films including “Ocean’s Eleven” and “The Manchurian Candidate,” died of natural causes Wednesday at the Motion Picture Picture and Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, Calif., his son Scott confirmed. He was 95.
One of Silva’s most memorable roles came in John Frankenheimer’s classic thriller “The Manchurian Candidate” (1962), in which he played Chunjin, the Korean houseboy for Laurence Harvey’s Raymond Shaw — and an agent for the Communists — who engages in a thrilling, well-choreographed martial arts battle with Frank Sinatra’s Major Bennett Marco in Shaw’s New York apartment.
Silva appeared in a number of other movies with Sinatra, including the original, Rat Pack-populated “Ocean’s Eleven” (1960) with Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., where he was one of the 11 thieves, and 1962 Western “Sergeants 3.”

WWE Superstar Carmella is a former Laker Girl and New England Patriots cheerleader, so she’s pretty good on her feet. With her legs, she’s deadly.
Ahead of Fox’s “SmackDown” on Friday and Sunday’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view on the WWE Network, TheWrap asked Mella (whose real name is Leah Van Dale) to (moon)walk us through the development of her “Code of Silence” submission maneuver.
“Well, I’m one of the smaller girls in all of the divisions — even when I was in Nxt, which is when I came up with that — so it’s something like, what could I do?” she told TheWrap. “I can’t do a power move. I’m not able to pick every woman on the roster up and be able to do something with them.”
“So what could we do that is believable?” continued Carmella, who is billed at 5’5”. “And really,...

Match #1: Heavy Machinery def. The Revival – Miracle On 34th Street Fight Match The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Heavy Machinery came to the ring in Santa Claus attire ready to battle Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson in a Miracle on 34th Street Fight. Or as ready as Otis could be after receiving the gift of a ham and a kiss from Mandy Rose. Following a hard-fought loss to The New Day in a Ladder Match at WWE TLC, The Revival were determined to bounce back against Heavy Machinery, but in the unorthodox contest that implemented cookies, fire extinguishers, gifts, tables, bowling bowls, Christmas trees and giant candy canes as weapons,...

Welcome to this week’s Smackdown Live review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have the revival of The Miz/Shane McMahon feud. Yeah, because we all wanted it so much. Yeah, that’s supposed to be a joke. Oh God, here we go.
Match #1: The Miz def. Elias (w/Shane McMahon) The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
With the odds stacked against him, The Miz got the chance to get a piece of Shane McMahon tonight by way of defeating Elias and Drew McIntyre in singles bouts. The A-Lister was undeterred by the mountain he was facing, and with Shane and McIntyre lurking at ringside, he took down The Living Truth down with a Skull-Crushing Finale to get one step closer to colliding with Shane-o-Mac.

The SmackDown women's title took it to the extreme. Who won? We have the results.
Now that Survivor Series gave us a decisive winner in the Raw vs. SmackDown war, we move on to WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders, & Chairs 2018. This will be the tenth installment of the annual PPV, as long as you count the head-scratching TLC: Tables, Ladders, Chairs...and Stairs from 2014. Otherwise, the PPV revolves around a match that features tables, ladders, and chairs. Sometimes this is really just a dressed-up hardcore match. Sometimes it’s just a ladder match with extra weapons. A lot of the time, the show also features ladder matches, chair matches, and so on.
Last year’s show was weird as hell due to Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt being forced off the show to illness, giving us Kurt Angle as a member of the Shield and mercy killing...

Match #1: R-Truth & Carmella defeated Andrade “Cien” Almas & Zelina Vega The following is courtesy of WWE.com:
Carmella was quick to respond when Andrade “Cien” Almas & Zelina Vega trashed the debut of “Truth TV” on social media over the weekend, prompting The Princess of Staten Island to challenge them to a mixed tag matchup on the blue brand. Despite Almas & Vega having plenty of experience teaming together, Fabulous Truth came out firing on all cylinders. After Almas pulled Carmella off of Vega when she was going for a pinfall and blocked a kick from The Princess of Staten Island, R-Truth clobbered “Cien,” and Princess Mella trapped Zelina in the Code of Silence after several lightning-quick reversals to earn the tapout victory.

Everyone knows Atlanta boasts one of the American South's biggest music scenes, full of exciting new acts looking to make names for themselves at clubs and festivals. But, did you know that a similar scene also exists for hair?
On Star Season 1 Episode 4, the girls performed at a huge hair show in Atlanta, where Miss Bruce was competing on behalf of Carlotta's salon.
Miss Bruce and the other stylists took turns creating looks onstage in front of a panel of judges to see who would be crowned the winner. I was not aware that live hair-styling with musical accompaniment was a competitive event!
This episode featured a very special guest in the form of Gladys Knight. Gladys appears to be following in the footsteps of Naomi Campbell's Louboutins, at least in regards to Lee Daniels television dramas; both previously guest-starred on Empire before popping up on Star.

Wondering how all the DC universe TV spin-offs, crossovers and webseries fit together? We have the answer...
In October 2012, Us network The CW launched the first season of Arrow, after wrapping up no fewer than ten seasons of Superman origin show Smallville a year before. Arrow was a completely new take on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, in a new universe that had nothing to do with Smallville or its version of Oliver Queen/Green Arrow. The series proved quite the hit for The CW, and a second season renewal inevitably followed. In season two, we were introduced to forensic scientist Barry Allen, better known to DC Comics readers as The Flash. Arrow got a third season, The Flash got his own TV show with great success, and the live action shared DC Comics universe on TV was born. And with it the question: how does it all fit together?...

4.19 Canary Cry
I hate to say it, but the Arrow writers appear to have a fundamental misunderstanding of who Laurel Lance was. Not only have they written her off the show in the middle of her arc but, when crafting an episode pitched as being about the aftermath of her death, they've handed us Canary Cry.
We start with the first of many flashbacks taking place directly after Tommy's death in the season one finale, but before Oliver flew to Lian Yu to hide from his feelings. That he didn't go directly there feels out of character, but then it's not the only thing about these scenes that's going to bother me.
We're tricked into thinking it's Laurel's funeral we're watching, but instead Laurel...

Major spoilers as Arrow season 4 finally reveals which character winds up in that grave...
This review contains spoilers.
4.18 11:59
I'm going to talk about Laurel Lance for a bit, because apparently it'll be my last chance to.
A lot of people dislike Laurel, which is an improvement on near-blanket hatred during the first couple of seasons of the show. But for three years the writers stuck with her, they developed her and they pushed her towards becoming the Black Canary 2.0 with admirable patience.
But there was always a sense that she was one of the audience's least favourite members of Team Arrow and, once Sara had been resurrected and Laurel had become comfortable with her new crime-fighting identity, the producers lost interest. She's been through a lot in four and a half years, but a lot of that tension had admittedly been resolved a while ago.
My personal feelings aside,...

Arrow season 4 delivers a genuinely entertaining episode full of what fans want to see more of from the show...
This review contains spoilers.
4.17 Beacon Of Hope
Fan sentiment towards Arrow isn't at its best right now, with many feeling that last week's Olicity-heavy outing was a demonstration of how skewed the storylines have been this year. Apparently the show has taken the complaint that it's so much darker than The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow and Supergirl as an excuse to up the romance quota and, when your only big relationship involves two of the team's core members, that's an issue.
So here we are with Felicity no longer part of Team Arrow, a move that pretty much nobody wanted and one that poses the question – what are the writers going to do with her now? This is a series about the Green Arrow, hence the name, so...

Vixen makes her live-action debut in the latest Arrow season 4 episode, which shows Oliver making the same mistakes time and again...
This review contains spoilers.
4.15 Taken
Heroes can't be happy, especially if they're the 'dark', 'avengey' type of hero. Television just can't cope with happy couples and, in addition, audiences for superhero shows expect a certain amount of drama. Forbidden love, girls in refrigerators or other insurmountable obstacles, whatever the writers come up with we can be sure that, if the main character is happy for even five minutes, it all has to come crashing down.
The difference on Arrow is that the hero's unhappiness is almost totally his doing. For the most part, the show's writers have done a great job writing Oliver in that his negative actions (excluding season three's Ra's storyline) always feel in character. He's guarded and damaged and imbued with a sense...

The question of who's in that flash-forward grave rears its head again in the latest episode of Arrow season 4...
This review contains spoilers.
4.14 Code Of Silence
Secrets. Everyone on this show is keeping secrets from people they love and everyone is doing it for the other person's own good. If Greg Berlanti shows have one trademark, it's that. On this week's Arrow it was Quentin's turn to hide his connection with Hive from Donna, a move that at least sparked the correct reaction from her.
The mystery of who's in that grave is getting more and more pressing as we move through the season, and Quentin has long been one of the prime suspects. He's already in Damien Darhk's crosshairs and his death would have a pretty significant impact on a lot of the cast, but besides that he's also been more disposable than a Diggle or a Felicity.

With Code of Silence, Arrow again turned its attention to the day-to-day Oliver Queen whilst the Green Arrow side of the character took a bit of a backseat. This latest episode instead largely centred on Ollie’s mayoral campaign as he looks to go up against Ruve Adams, the wife of uber-rogue Damien Darhk.
New to the scene in order to help out Ruve are The Demolition Team, joining the show in order to help cause chaos and destruction in Star City. Whilst Team Arrow and Captain Lance do their best to take down this new threat, we also get brought up to speed with Damien as he now knows Oliver Queen’s biggest secret: that he has a young son called William.
Elsewhere, the Oliver and Felicity wedding looms large, whilst Quentin Lance and Donna Smoak’s relationship hits some problems in a Wtf-filled episode of Arrow.

Which is worse a lie or a secret? Or are they the same thing? On Arrow Season 4 Episode 14, "Code of Silence," Lance lied to protect Donna and it nearly destroyed any chance they had for happiness, meanwhile Oliver's secret son weighed heavy on him.

After a string of what could be described as “filler” episodes of Arrow, it’s nice to see that next week’s instalment is going to be shifting the spotlight back to Team Arrow’s battle against Hive as Damien Darhk and that villainous organization look to put Star City’s heroes down for good.
For more details on what’s to come in “Code Of Silence,” here’s the official synopsis:
Oliver (Stephen Amell) and team uncover Hive’s plan to take out Team Arrow once and for all. With Hive’s next attack imminent, Lance (Paul Blackthorne) wonders if Donna (guest star Charlotte Ross) is safer without him in her life. Meanwhile, with the wedding fast approaching, Oliver begins to feel guilty that he hasn’t told Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) about his son. James Bamford directed the episode written by Wendy Mericle & Oscar Balderrama.

Code of Silence
Written by Michael Butler, Dennis Shryack and Mike Gray
Directed by Andrew Davis
U.S.A., 1985
Eddie Cusack (Chuck Norris) and his crew (among them Dennis Farina, Ralph Foody and Joe Guzaldo) are undercover cops stationed just outside a rundown apartment complex in a Chicago slum, waiting for the right to storm the building for a drug bust. Unbeknownst to the detectives, a rival gang is also prepping to raid the building, and when both forces collide, the entire operation explodes into a mess for all three factions. At present, two Chicago gangs are on the cusp of war and Eddie Cusack must contend not only with that terrible situation but a cover up within the force following the unwarranted demise of a teenage boy during the muffed raid. As the film’s tagline states, Eddie Cusack is a good cop having a very bad day!
