Whilst shooting for the scene where Amitabh Bachchan is buried in the sand. the shooting broke of for rest. Amitabh refused to come out of the sand said and said he would continue lying in the sand because if he came out and went back again, the shot wouldn't look natural, despite the flies around him and heat.
Puneet Issar was thrown out of the film by Manmohan Desai. This was due to the Coolie accident.
Gavin Packard was promised a decent role in the film. As the movie progressed, he realized all he was doing was standing behind the main villain and saluting him. After a argument with Manmohan Desai, he walked out of the film.
Mard was, according to Box Office India, the third highest-grossing film of the year 1985.
The original script had two heroines. By 1985 all of Amitabh's earlier heroines had left the scene. He had stopped acting with Rekha after Silsila. Parveen had left the country. Zeenat was getting married. Raakhee had graduated to mother roles. Hema was being chosen for strong content based roles. Manmohan Desai approached Reena Roy who had never been an Amitabh heroine until then except for a non romantic role in Naseeb. However Reena was getting married to Mohsin and had announced her retirement. At that point Desai scrapped the role and increased Amrita Singh's role. Amrita who was not very feminine by traditional standards got nick-named Mard Singh after the movie.
