Ian McShane's father Harry McShane was a Scottish footballer, whose career included a spell at Manchester United.
McShane"s character appears to be loosely based on Manchester United striker George Best, considered by many to have been one of the best players of all time but whose career collapsed prematurely due to his chronic alcoholism. McShane does physically resemble Best.
