With the episode featuring two of the cast from the sketch show (Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones) there are references to the series, most explicitly a character called "Doctor Not The 9 O'Clock News". However, Neil's question about who invented crop rotation ("John Lloyd") is also a nod to the producer of the show, as referenced by Alexei Sayle in the BluRay commentary track.
