Jury Duty is returning for a second season on Amazon Prime Video and the upcoming installment was secretly filmed without anyone knowing!
The first season of the show ran on Amazon’s Freevee streaming service, but the company closed up that offering and put all of the content on Prime Video instead.
Season one of Jury Duty featured an unsuspecting person participating as a juror at a trial, but everyone else there was an actor who was in on the joke. James Marsden played an exaggerated version of himself and earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his performance.
The theme of the new season has been revealed and it won’t take place at a trial.

One of the comedy breakouts of 2023 was Jury Duty, a documentary-style comedy for Amazon Freevee that featured James Marsden and other actors surrounding an unsuspecting juror at a trial. The Emmy-nominated comedy is back and — surprise — its second season is already in the can, sources tell Deadline. It will run on Prime Video where Freevee’s content migrated after Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming platform was shut down last November.
Details are being kept under wraps but we hear that the theme of the new installment is David vs. Goliath. Taking inspiration from classic 1980s movies such as Animal House and Caddyshack, it is about a small business going on a company retreat, with the real, unsuspecting person tested when a Goliath suddenly shows up, sources said.

Rodney Dangerfield’s whole act is predicated on the idea that he gets no respect, which obviously wasn’t true. Dangerfield was a beloved comedian, a successful film actor and a one-time board game star.
But Dangerfield’s comedy catchphrase became depressingly accurate during his dealings with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 1994, the Back to School star applied to become a member of the Academy, after his name was submitted by actor and friend Leonard Gaines. When others expressed surprise at the idea of making Dangerfield a member of the Academy, Gaines believed that he was “doing the Academy a favor” by inviting a huge star like Dangerfield.
As the L.A. Times pointed out at the time, Dangerfield met the criteria to join, with “major parts in at least three theatrical releases to his credit.” He also presented an award at the 1987 Oscars and killed.

The Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown was recently nominated for eight Academy Awards. But just think of how many more nominations it would have gotten had the filmmakers included a scene in which Dylan shares a bed with the future star of Caddyshack.
As odd as it may sound, this scene wasn’t totally off the table, seeing as how Chase once claimed to have spent the night with the legendary musician.
During an episode of the short-lived Netflix talk show Norm Macdonald Has a Show, the late comedian, and Bob Dylan superfan, asked Chase if he had any good Dylan stories. His response was more than a little surprising: “I slept with him.”
Chase went on to explain that he was attending Bard College at the time, just across the river from his hometown of Woodstock, New York. “He comes over, and he’s trying to teach himself the piano,...

While it may not be a laugh riot in the vein of “Caddyshack” the recently released “One of Them Days,” Brady Corbet’s awards-buzzy “The Brutalist” does indirectly offer its own kind of twisted humor. Following a Hungarian architect and Holocaust survivor as he rebuilds his life in post-wwii America, the film carries dark overtones throughout as his efforts to pursue his craft are often thwarted by his cruel, bigoted benefactor, played by Guy Pearce. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Pearce acknowledged the serious of the subject matter, while at the same time pointing out how certain scenes can’t help but elicit laughs from the audience.
“It’s funny how powerful money is and how much people will acquiesce because they think maybe a couple of bones might be thrown their way,” Pearce said. “But I feel like the interesting thing about Van Buren is...

While Chevy Chase definitely won’t be in the upcoming Community movie — unless one of the characters happens to pull out a photo of their dead friend who masturbated himself into an early grave several years ago — its cast members are still fielding questions about the Caddyshack star.
Joel McHale recently appeared on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, and while McHale never appeared on Saturday Night Live, his relationship with Chevy was obviously an area of interest for the two former SNLers.
Spade asked if Chase’s bad behavior on the set of Community was “more of a rumor, or was he a bit of a pickle?” — possibly because Spade hasn’t used the internet in the past 11 years. “I’ve never answered any questions about him,” McHale joked before going on to describe just how frustrating Chase was to work with.

Chevy Chase's 35-year-old Christmas comedy cements its status as an iconic holiday movie with its latest streaming success. After becoming the breakout star of the first season of Saturday Night Live during the 1970s, Chase left the sketch show in its second season and went on to become a comedic lead, starring in some of the most successful comedies of the 1980s. These include Caddyshack, Caddyshack II, Fletch, Fletch Lives, Oh! Heavenly Dog, Modern Problems, Spies Like Us, and Three Amigos.
One of Chase's most successful comedy ventures of the 1980s was the National Lampoon's Vacation movies, starting with the 1983 film. Inspired by John Hughes' short story Vacation '58 originally published in National Lampoon magazine, the films follow the chaotic misadventures of the Griswold family and their well-meaning yet hapless patriarch, Clark Griswold, whose attempts to create the perfect vacations for his family spiral into disastrous and hilariously awkward situations.

As Saturday Night Live marks its 50th season, Bill Murray hopes to have a homecoming soon.
The Oscar nominee said he’d “certainly” like to return as a host for its current milestone season, defending the NBC sketch comedy show’s current creative team against criticism.

National Lampoon's Vacation is a vintage comedy franchise beginning in the 1980s, though the lack of numerals makes it tricky to know which order to view them in. Chevy Chase is a comedy icon, which was clear from his appearances on the first season of Saturday Night Live. Chase went on to a string of movie hits, including Foul Play, Caddyshack, and Fletch. Unfortunately, Chase also has a reputation for being difficult to work with, so after a string of duds in the '90s, he was largely relegated to supporting roles or cameos.
Still, his movie star heyday yielded some classics, including National Lampoon's Vacation. Directed by Harold Ramis (Groundhog Day) and written by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club), the film detailed a disastrous family vacation, led by Chase's optimistic patriarch, Clark Griswold. With its ’70s-era production details and sprawling age-spanning ensemble, Saturday Night has high hopes for the Oscars this year. But if the Jason Reitman period piece manages to win one, it will achieve something that the cast it depicts never could.
Though Saturday Night Live has racked up a record-breaking 103 Emmys and churned out generational talent with regularity over its 50 seasons, only six among its more than 150 castmembers have ever been nominated for an Oscar (five if you don’t include one-episode-and-done player Laurie Metcalf).
Its only winner? Robert Downey Jr., just this past March for Oppenheimer. And his 1985-86 SNL stint is a career footnote.
“I don’t think it’s conscious,” says Turner Classic Movies host Dave Karger, an Oscar prognosticator and author of 50 Oscar Nights, “but there might be something going on. There’s obviously a disconnect between SNL and [film] awards.”

Robert Downey Jr. earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Academy Awards for playing Kirk Lazarus/"Sergeant Lincoln Osiris" in "Tropic Thunder." (Though it took 15 years and "Oppenheimer" for him to cinch the Oscar.)
Rdj's performance as the self-involved Lazarus — an actor who takes his craft so seriously he'll get surgical blackface — is indeed a highlight. It's the most transgressive part of "Tropic Thunder," but no matter how offensive it can look out of context, it's executed with purpose in the film, not hate (except towards method actors).
Only one other part in "Tropic Thunder" rivals Rdj as Lazarus; Tom Cruise as short-tempered studio executive Les Grossman. Even more so than "Collateral" (which makes Cruise's steely screen presence sinister), Cruise's Grossman performance attests to his surprising range. In "Tropic Thunder," Cruise's movie star good looks are concealed beneath balding, burly makeup and he acts nothing like he usually does.

Redditor Pale_Willingness_415 has been wondering about a certain comedian for years. Sure, Chevy Chase has a terrible reputation for being difficult. “But is the common perception that he was just always a jerk or did he change because of fame”?
The folks in the r/LiveFromNewYork subreddit were happy to weigh in.
Spoiler alert: The first option was the runaway winner. “Based on everything we know about SNL Season One, he was always a jerk,” posted user JacedFaced, “and then he got worse once he started to think he was solely responsible for inventing modern comedy.”

Quentin Tarantino loves bastards, inglorious or otherwise. And the worst thing a movie can do, in his opinion, is redeem those a-holes.
“If you make a movie about a fucking bastard, you could bet that fucking bastard would see the error of their ways and be redeemed in the last 20 minutes,” Tarantino writes in his book of essays, Cinema Speculation. “Like, for example, all of Bill Murray’s characters.”
Whoa — what did Murray’s cinematic smart-asses do to catch the back of Tarantino’s hand?
The same thing countless other comedy characters have done throughout movie history: Start out irresponsible and reckless, then learn a few lessons over the course of the story to become a better person.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
James Cameron is the unquestioned king of the box office. "Avatar" is, by a considerable margin, the highest-grossing movie of all time and, before all's said and done, it could be the only movie in history to touch $3 billion worldwide. Cameron also owns two of the other spots in the top four globally with "Avatar: The Way of Water" and "Titanic." He's been doing it on the biggest scale for a long, long time. But it certainly didn't start out that way. Early on, the blockbuster maestro was simply looking for a way to meaningfully break into Hollywood.

In the movie Saturday Night, audiences get a sneak peek into the chaotic process of putting the first episode of Saturday Night Live on the air, but there's curiousity about what happened to the original cast afterward. Saturday Night is a historical comedy directed by Jason Reitman and led by a massively star-studded cast, including Gabriel Labelle, Dylan O'Brien, Rachel Sennott, Willem Dafoe, J.K. Simmons, and more. The movie revolves around the real life sketch comedy show, Saturday Night Live, which has been airing consistently since 1975. The film shows Lorne Michaels' struggle to make the show happen.
A major aspect of Saturday Night is the cast. Nowadays, audiences recognize members of Saturday Night Live's cast to be some of the best comedians of their generation. However, this was not the case during the show's first season. Michaels hired relatively unknown performers who NBC had very little faith in. They...

2024 has been a really huge year for "Saturday Night Live," the sketch comedy institution that operates out of Studio 8 in New York City's famous 30 Rockefeller Center. With the show entering its 50th season during its September premiere -- which brought Emmy-winning "Hacks" star Jean Smart on board as a host -- and a major election this year providing plenty of material week after week, more eyes are on Lorne Michaels' 90-minute late-night show than ever. Not only that, but Jason Reitman's film "Saturday Night," which focuses on the show's humble beginnings and its messy, chaotic 1975 premiere, releases on October 11 (the anniversary of the "Saturday Night Live" series premiere).

The upcoming Saturday Night movie has one of the most stacked ensemble casts of 2024. The first-look images of Saturday Night reveal the behind-the-scenes chaos of the legendary sketch comedy series which will be premiering its 50th season on September 28, 2024. Directed by Jason Reitman, Saturday Night will be released in theaters on October 11, 2024. Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), 4-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (Poor Things), and Emmy winner Matthew Rhys (The Americans) are among the talented ensemble in Saturday Night.

Known for his smug, bemused sense of humor, Chevy Chase became famous for a series of highly profitable comedies. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in New York in 1943, Chase turned to comedy after a series of odd jobs. After a short stint with the “National Lampoon,” he shot to stardom in 1975 as one of the original Not Ready for Primetime Players on “Saturday Night Live.” In its first season, Chase became famous both for his pratfalls and his Gerald Ford impersonation. He was also the initial host of “Weekend Update,” starting each week with the catchphrase, “I’m Chevy Chase, and you’re not.”
After winning Emmys for writing and performing in 1976, Chase left “SNL” after one year to pursue a movie career (he was replaced by Bill Murray). He earned Golden Globe nominations as Best Comedy/Musical Actor...

Bill Murray first came to national attention when he joined “Saturday Night Live” in its second season to replace the departed Chevy Chase. Like many of his SNL colleagues of the era Murray was able to parlay his television success into a film career. He first made his film mark in comedies but in later years would take on increasingly dramatic films as well, earning an Oscar nomination as Best Actor for “Lost in Translation” (2003). Murray would return to TV in 2015 for the HBO limited series “Olive Kitteridge,” for which he won an Emmy as Best Supporting Actor playing a suicidal man who becomes involved with the title character (Frances McDormand).

Cult classics come in many forms, and many great movies of the 1980s went overlooked, only to be hailed as influential and important today. There are plenty of 1980s comedy movies that no one remembers, and the same can be said for most genres, no matter the decade. However, several films have gained cult status but have been reevaluated through a contemporary lens because of their dated elements. Most movies have problems, no matter when they were filmed, and this doesn't mean they're not worth watching, but context might change the meaning of some scenes.
Controversial and intense subjects have a place in cinema, but characterizing them well and not perpetuating stereotypes is an important aspect of filmmaking.

Caddyshack is among the most beloved of comedies. It’s endlessly quoted, referenced and parodied, its array of colorful goofballs embedded in our collective consciousness. But who’s the film’s main character? It’s not Bill Murray’s Carl Spackler, Ted Knight’s Elihu Smails, Rodney Dangerfield’s Al Czervik or Chevy Chase’s Ty Webb. No, the man who drives the action is actually Danny.
You remember Danny Noonan, the young caddie trying to make some money and maybe get laid. Amidst Caddyshack’s crazy, vain or smug weirdos, Danny comes closest to resembling ordinary human behavior. He’s not trying to murder gophers. He’s not making inappropriate comments loudly in public. Danny is just a poor local kid navigating a comic minefield of rich idiots. The actor who played Danny did such a good job that you tend to forget him. But as the film celebrates its 44th anniversary,...

Robert Zemeckis couldn't have asked for a more propitious start to his filmmaking career. Soon after graduating from University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts in 1973, Zemeckis, on the strength of his award-winning student film, found a powerful young mentor in Steven Spielberg. The "Jaws" maestro was Universal Pictures' in-house wunderkind, so when he flipped out over "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," a raucous comedy, written by Zemeckis and his creative partner Bob Gale, about a trio of young girls desperate to attend the live taping of The Beatles' first performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," the studio greenlit it -- even though Zemeckis was completely untested as a feature director.
Five years later, Zemeckis' was very close to finished in Hollywood.
With a budget of $2.8 million, "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" wasn't considered a gamble. And when it lost money for Universal, the studio didn't sweat it. But...

Golf films explore comedic and real-life golfers, adding humor and depth to the sport's portrayal. The popularity of golf movies lies in their mix of comedy and real stories, making for an enjoyable viewing experience. Some golf films, while entertaining, lack a lasting impact in the realm of sports movies, despite their popularity among the golf community.
Golf isn't the most action-packed sport, but it has proven to be an underrated subject in many famous sports films. From classics such as Happy Gilmore to newer releases like The Phantom of the Open, the subtlety of golf pairs nicely with films that explore various characters. Some comical characters, including those in Caddyshack, have a humorous and contrasting approach to the often quiet sport.

What kind of music goes best with comedy? Even if you’ve never seen The Benny Hill Show, you know its silly, sped-up theme song. For years, funny movies would incorporate swinging jazz or playful orchestral tunes. Then, in the late 1970s, John Landis had the idea to tap acclaimed Oscar-winning composer (and friend) Elmer Bernstein to write a no-winking serious score for Landis’ outrageous Animal House. The juxtaposition worked perfectly, the onscreen hijinks accentuated by Bernstein’s soaring strings — almost as if the movie was pretending to be classy while the characters were thumbing their nose at the pomposity. Soon, other movies, like Airplane! (also scored by Bernstein), were doing the same thing, proving that what initially seemed like a bizarre notion for music in a comedy could actually be brilliant.
But times change, and one trend gets replaced by a new one. By the mid-1980s, several hit comedies contained a hit single.

Columbia Pictures never wanted to make Ghostbusters. Well, to put a finer point on it, those who technically ran the studio out of New York City (then as a Coca-Cola subsidiary) wanted no part in the catching ghost business—so much so that lawyers got involved. But by the time the Manhattan executives heard about the project, the Columbia Pictures chairman out in actual Hollywood, Frank Price, had already greenlit the movie and put a seeming target on his back.
Such was the opinion of “high-concept” and special effects-driven comedies in the early 1980s.
Released 40 years ago this month, Ghostbusters has obviously outlived those early doubts. It’s a pop culture touchstone with the same kind of tenacity Slimer displays at a wedding reception buffet. There’s always room for more bustin’, whether it be by way of loving tributes to this classic of 1980s comedy, or through new attempts to expand the brand.

One of the classic movie tropes of studio comedies, and especially in the 70s and 80s- is the ever-clever “slobs vs snobs” tale. You know, the blue-collar underdog against a preppy, often annoyingly sophisticated social elite. Movies like Revenge of the Nerds, Animal House, Wayne’s World, or Caddyshack make this the crux of their stories and often use multiple characters in each category to drive the shenanigans all the way up. But in some cases, a movie will tell the story with just one slob and one snob- and crank them both to their absolute extremes- and then throw in a heist because… we love that stuff.
In today’s episode of Revisited, we’re going to be talking about 1988’s buddy comedy classic- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This movie stars Steve Martin and (the now retired) Michael Caine as two con artists who make an old western-style bet to run each other out of town.

When we talk about lost films, most people immediately think of silent movies, cinema on nitrate that either went up in flames or was in the hands of studios who didn't see the value in preserving it. Although we've come a long way in terms of film preservation since then, there are still plenty of films from the second half of the 20th century that may not be technically "lost," but are nearly impossible to track down and actually watch. They may have been put out on comparatively low-quality VHS back in the day, but not a peep since then -- these films never got a DVD or Blu-ray release, and aren't available on any of the streaming services.

"This will be a weekend of light, love, and oneness." Get ready for a bonkers horror comedy arriving on 4/20 weekend. We missed this trailer when it first dropped a few weeks ago, but there's still time to catch up with it. Hanky Panky is a zany no-budget indie comedy made by filmmakers Lindsey Haun & Nick Roth, who were inspired by Wet Hot American Summer and Caddyshack. This is to be filed under the "Puppets & Blood" horror subgenre. A man and his sentient napkin friend save the world from a dark evil top-hat in a cabin deep in the Utah mountains, and also learn to love. Seth Green plays (or just voices?) the top-hat, and the cast includes Jacob DeMonte-Finn, Ashley Holliday Tavares, Christina Laskay, Anthony Rutowicz, Clare Grant, Azure Parsons, and Toby Bryan. The filmmakers explain they had "literally no budget, nobody got paid, everyone chipped in for food and drugs,...

When Adam Sandler made his television debut as Stud Boy and the Trivia Delinquent on MTV's influential game show "Remote Control," he did not exude an all-ages appeal. He was an unassuming goofball: funny, yes, but in a dorky way that augured a career as, at best, a supporting comedic performer. If he played his cards right, he could have Gilbert Gottfried's movie and television career.
Like Gottfried, Sandler became a Not Ready for Prime Time Player on "Saturday Night Live." Unlike Gottfried, he didn't get canned after his first season. By the early 1990s, he was one of the show's breakout stars. He built on his success via a pair of platinum comedy albums ("They're All Gonna Laugh at You" and "What the Hell Happened to Me?"), and proved he could carry a movie with 1995's "Billy Madison." The critics loathed him, but teens and twentysomethings dug his unrepentantly juvenile humor.

The filmmakers preview, “Hanky Panky was inspired by the way certain zany comedies like Wet Hot American Summer and Caddyshack seemed to capture the energy of locking their whole cast and crew together in, say, a summer camp, or a coke-orgy fueled hotel in the middle of a Florida hurricane with Chevy Chase — and then somehow get that energy on screen.

Recently, I had the chance to sit down with Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, who are out promoting Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Both Rudd and Coon have been outspoken in their love of the original Ghostbusters, as well as the original cast, and I couldn’t help but put them both on the spot a little bit. Given that young audiences are discovering the original Ghostbusters thanks to these new movies, I wondered which classic comedy featuring some of the cast Rudd and Coon might suggest younger audiences check out next.

Chicago – Bill Murray is a son of Chicagoland, born and raised in the area and beginning his career at The Second City. To honor his friend and collaborator Harold Ramis, Murray made an appearance on February 2nd, 2024, on Chicago’s Navy Pier on behalf of Harold Ramis Day and of course his classic film “Groundhog Day.”
