The house that was used in this film was an actual house in the woods of Newton, New Jersey. No one had lived in it for 15 years before filming began. The previous owner of the house was actually found to have been murdered there.

This film shares a lot of the same filming locations as both Friday the 13th (1980) and Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981).
Charles Kaufman, in the film's 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release's director's commentary, said that a very ironic thing happened during filming: an actress who played one of the victims and one of the actors who played one of the two sons hit it off and starting dating when not filming - even though his character terrorizes and brutalizes her. Concerned that neither would be able to project the sense of terror that was needed, Kaufman asked them to postpone their relationship until after the film was finished. They complied.
In the film's 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release's director's commentary, Charles Kaufman said that while shooting a scene in the film, Billy Ray McQuade (Addley) was so hungover from drinking the night before that he threw up on Rose Ross (Mother). Naturally, the shooting of this scene had to be postponed.
