It’s trendy these days to take a character from popular children’s stories and given them a horror twist. Lately we’ve been hearing about horror movies based on the likes of Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Bambi, Pinocchio, Three Blind Mice, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears… and like I said the last time I wrote about this, when one set of filmmakers decides to make a horror film featuring a beloved kids’ story character, there are sometimes multiple other sets of filmmakers working on horror films that center on the same character. We’ve seen this happen with Mickey Mouse, and now the character who’ll soon be seen in more than one horror movie is Popeye the Sailor Man. Last November, it was announced that Alpeke Entertainment is working on a slasher horror comedy called Shiver Me Timbers, which puts a horror twist on Popeye.

The stream of public domain horror continues, this time it’s E.C. Segar’s iconic sailor Popeye who gets turned into a killer. The script by Harry Boxley, who has already scripted a trio of similar films, Piglet, Mouse of Horrors and Cinderella’s Curse re-imagines him as a boy born with huge forearms and freakish strength who accidentally kills one of his tormentors leading to the death of his parents and the young lad seemingly drowning.
Years later we find out he’s still alive as he kills off a trio of obnoxious YouTubers. From there we join Tara (Emily Rose Mogilner; 500) who is about to inherit the land where the house stood so she along with her boyfriend Dylan, Nick (Bruno Cryan; Treeline Essex Girls), Kathy,...

Doug: It all started with me falling down the ever-so-dangerous research rabbit hole. One day, I got intrigued about how few female serial killers there have been… well, how many we know about.

It seems like a new public domain horror movie pops up every time we shut our eyes for a couple minutes, with two horror movies featuring the Popeye character already announced in recent months. Christopher Nolan’s next big epic at Universal, The Odyssey, has added Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin and Samantha Morton.
For Patel, Page and Irwin, it’s a reteam with the 2x Oscar-winning filmmaker. Patel starred in Nolan’s 2020 Tenet, Page in 2010’s Inception, and Irwin in 2014’s Interstellar. For 2x Oscar nominee Morton, it’s her first time working with Nolan.
The foursome join a booming ensemble that counts Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Benny Safdie and Charlize Theron.
Nolan’s mythic action epic, shot with new Imax cameras, is based on the ancient Greek poem by Homer which follows Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. The classic explores themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning and the struggle against divine will. The tale includes iconic stories like Odysseus’ encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens and the witch-goddess Circe,...

In the "The Simpsons" episode "Alone Again, Natura-Diddly", the Simpsons discover a new outdoor auto racing track inside their favorite nature preserve and decide to stay and watch a race or two. Indeed, many recognizable characters are there, including Ned Flanders (Harry Shearer) and his wife Maude (Marcia Mitzman Gaven), who sit in the back row. In between races, cheerleaders take to the track and use a t-shirt cannon to fire free clothing into the stands. Tragically, one of the errant t-shirts strikes Maude in the chest, throwing her over the back railing of the stadium. She plunges to her death, landing in the parking lot below.
The rest of the episode follows Ned's grieving process as he mourns the loss of his wife. Ned, perhaps shockingly, even finds his faith in God shaken over the tragedy; ordinarily, Ned is ultra-Christian.

Jules Feiffer, the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist who also wrote occasionally for the stage and screen, including Mike Nichols’ film “Carnal Knowledge” and Robert Altman’s “Popeye,” died on Jan. 17 at his home in upstate New York. He was 95. Feiffer’s wife confirmed to the Washington Post that he died of congestive heart failure.
Feiffer was a cartoonist with the Village Voice for more than 40 years until 1997.
His first connection with the film business came with the Oscar-winning 1961 animated short “Munro,” based on Feiffer’s story — a parable about the mindless military mentality in which the title character, a 4-year-old, is drafted.
Feiffer adapted his own play “Little Murders,” a dark satire about life in New York that had been briefly staged on Broadway in 1967, for the 1971 film of that name directed by Alan Arkin and starring Elliott Gould. Roger Ebert gave the movie four out of four stars and said,...

We're used to seeing Popeye let his fists do the talking, but the iconic Sailor Man will be doling out more than a few spinach-fuelled ass-kickings in a new slasher movie from ITN Studios.
Following a recent first look via some promo stills, the first trailer for Popeye horror parody - which is officially titled Popeye's Revenge - has been released online (via Bloody Disgusting).
The success of the recent low-budget Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey has led to a number of classic animated tales being given a horror makeover, and the spinach-chomping comic strip hero is the latest beloved character to be turned into a bloodthirsty killer for an upcoming indie project.
This will be the first of two (so far) Popeye horror flicks to be released this year, the other being Popeye The Slayer Man.

Two separate horror films based on the iconic character Popeye are being released next year. Shiver me timbers!
Mention the words ‘Popeye film’ and the chances are you’ll cast your mind back to Robert Altman’s 1980 live action take on the character which, while flawed, was tremendous fun. It also featured arguably one of the greatest, most accurate pieces of casting ever in the form of Shelly Duvall as Olive Oyl, who appeared alongside Robin Williams in his film debut as the title character. Fervent fans can even visit the set, which is still standing today as a theme park attraction in Malta.
The notion of taking established, family friendly characters and dropping them into their own horror films began with Winnie the Pooh: Bloody And Honey, Rhys Frake Waterfield’s low-budget slasher that became a profitable hit on home video and streaming, which led to this year’s...

Pic stars Sean Michael Conway, Elena Juliano, Mabel Thomas, Marie-Louise Boisnier, Jeff Thomas, and Steven McCormack, along with Angela Relucio (Code Black) and Sarah Nicklin (Black Mass). Jason Stephens plays the title role.

Update: So, we appear to have mixed up two Popeye horror flicks! We assumed Shiver Me Timbers was the ITN Studios project we told you about last week, but apparently it's a completely separate movie.
Following a recent first look via some promo stills, the first trailer for ITN Studios' Popeye horror parody - which is officially titled Shiver Me Timbers - has been released online, and it looks... about how you'd expect!
The success of the recent low-budget Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey has led to a number of classic animated tales being given a horror makeover, and the spinach-chomping sailor is the latest beloved character to be turned into a bloodthirsty killer for an upcoming indie project.
Described as a "raunchy and gory slasher," it's worth clarifying that ITN’s movie is not connected to the Twisted Childhood Universe, aka the "Poohniverse."
Stephen Murphy is set to play the title character.

The latest iconic public domain character to get a twisted horror movie is Popeye, Bloody Disgusting has learned, with ITN Studios currently hard at work on their horror movie Popeye.
Expected to chew spinach and tear apart bodies in January 2025, ITN’s Popeye is *not* connected to the “twisted childhood universe” known as the Poohniverse, we have to note.
Rene August is producing the Popeye horror movie, with William Stead directing. Described as a “raunchy and gory slasher,” here’s the first official plot synopsis for the film:
The legend of Popeye haunts a group of councilors as they intend to open a summer camp.
Steven Murphy plays Popeye in the upcoming horror movie, and Bloody Disgusting has been exclusively provided with a gallery of first look images of the beefed up slasher maniac.

The trailer for The Forest Hills reveals a glimpse at the final performance of late actress Shelley Duvall. Duvall is best known for her performances in Robert Altman movies including Popeye, Nashville, and 3 Women as well as her role as Wendy Torrance in 1980's The Shining. Although she left Hollywood after her role in the 2002 movie Manna From Heaven, she returned for the independent horror movie after writer-director Scott Goldberg reached out to see if she would be interested in participating in the project, which became her final role before her death from complications from diabetes in 2024.

Poland’s American Film Festival is continuing to bet on U.S. independent films, ignoring the Hollywood blockbusters and bigger budget auteur films from the mini-majors.
“The fest selects a very precise type of project – they are real independent films, not in that Independent Spirit Award, less-than-$40 million sense,” says director and producer Rob Rice.
“The people that come with them have a kind of shorthand with each other. We are all up against the same things and we are all trying to trick the industry into mistaking our films for ‘real movies.’”
“There are always lots of interesting things happening in American independent cinema. It’s enough to mention three alumni of [fest’s industry sidebar] U.S. in Progress: Anu Valia (“We Strangers”), India Donaldson (“Good One”) and Sarah Friedland. These are great examples of new female voices speaking about female experiences, and keeping things intimate and personal,” says artistic director Ula Śniegowska.

Linda Hunt's role as Hetty in NCIS: LA has significantly contributed to her $12 million net worth. Hunt's Aries leadership traits shine through in her iconic character, who is a pilot, author, and Olympian. Despite her short stature, Hunt's talents are huge and she even won an Oscar early in her career.
Linda Hunt is an actor who's been in the business for over 40 years, but it's likely her late-career role as Operations Manager Henrietta "Hetty" Lange in NCIS: Los Angeles that is most responsible for her sizable net worth. Hunt made her film debut in 1980's Popeye opposite Robin Williams, where she played Mrs. Oxheart. Just two years later, Hunt was taking home the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role as Billy Kwan in The Year of Living Dangerously. Hunt continued acting steadily over the decades, and in 2009 was cast in her most famous role, Hetty Lange.

Shine On: The Forgotten Shining Location explores an area of The Shining that hasn’t been covered before, here’s the trailer.
This month, we lost Shelly Duvall. Among her myriad acting roles, not least one of the most perfect pieces of accurate comic book casting ever as Olive Oyl in Robert Altman’s Popeye, she is perhaps best remembered for her incredible performance opposite Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. The tales of tyranny from the set are legendary, with stories of endless takes and Duvall suffering from nervous exhaustion.

Robert Altman was in Houston filming “Brewster McCloud” when he met Shelley Duvall at a party. After the filmmaker and his crew became close to Duvall, Altman was convinced that she would be perfect as the off-beat young woman who falls for Brewster. Duvall, who had sold cosmetics and studied nutrition in college, was stunned. “I’m not an actress,” she insisted. To which Altman replied, “Oh yes, you are.”
At least that’s the way that Keith Carradine, a frequent collaborator of both Altman and Duvall, heard it. “I love that story,” Carradine says. “It’s so Bob, it’s so Shelley.”
Duvall died on July 11 at the age of 75, having long ago left Hollywood, but she left behind a treasure trove of indelible onscreen performances, playing Jack Nicholson’s terrified wife in “The Shining,” as well as a series of quirky roles in Altman films like “Nashville,” “3 Women” and “Popeye,...

The ’70s were an important period for Hollywood, which saw the rise of many auteurs, who redefined the medium, and Hollywood giants like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, etc. Shelley Duvall was one of the prominent names that garnered traction during this period following the actor’s appearance in her frequent collaborator Robert Altman’s Nashville.
However, her biggest challenge arrived when she joined forces with auteur Stanley Kubrick, most notable for his knack for perfection, which ended up being extremely excruciating for Duvall.

When Shelley Duvall was cast to play Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” (1980), the film she would become most famous for, it was overwhelmingly the most mainstream movie she’d ever done — but more to the point, it was the most mainstream character. Duvall, who died July 11 at 75, had spent the better part of a decade playing vibrant kooks and eccentrics in Robert Altman movies. She had also rocked that cameo in “Annie Hall” as a Rolling Stone reporter who dates Alvy Singer and says, “Sex with you is really a Kafkaesque experience.”
But in “The Shining,” Duvall, with her feather voice and beaming doll-like features, was suddenly called on to incarnate the essence of normality. And she did it as if born to it. She played Wendy in long black lank hair, toning down her natural Texas drawl to something that sounded more neutral and Midwestern. The...

In 2002, Duvall decided to retire from acting. Following the attention from The Hollywood Reporter‘s 2021 cover story on her reclusive life in Texas Hill Country post-Hollywood, the actress returned to the screen in the 2023 independent horror film The Forest Hills.

Shelley Duvall and I crossed paths at the moment I needed her most.
It was late 2020. Covid lockdowns, George Floyd, media layoffs — everything sucked, and it wasn’t getting better. I adopted a French bulldog puppy to help me cope and named him Otto. Otto would scream every night until I brought him into bed with me, then poop in my duvet.
I tried to maintain a sense of normalcy at work. I wrote a piece for The Hollywood Reporter commemorating the 40th anniversary of Robert Altman’s Popeye. I had not seen the film since 1980. Seeing it again, I was utterly bewitched by Duvall. Her Olive Oyl, twirling around a wooden post singing “He Needs Me,” struck me as being one of the great movie musical moments.
That got me thinking about her. Where was Shelley? What was she up to? I recalled the Dr. Phil appearance — who could forget it?...

Legendary actress Shelley Duvall has sadly passed away at the age of 75. Movie fans know her best for her stellar work as Wendy Torrance in The Shining, and for playing Olive Oyl in the big-screen version of Popeye — although her work in the Harland Williams vehicle RocketMan has yet to be fully-appreciated.
Anyone who grew up in the ‘80s or ‘90s likely also remembers Duvall as the host and creator of Faerie Tale Theatre, one of the most bizarre, charming and idiosyncratic children’s shows in the history of TV. Each episode presented an hour-long, live-action adaptation of a familiar (or occasionally not-so-familiar) fairy tale, featuring a double-take-inducing cast of Hollywood legends and upstart comic stars.
Where else could you find Elliott Gould playing a giant in Jack and the Beanstalk, or Joan Collins as a witch trying to capture Hansel and Gretel? Or Howie Mandel as a character named...
