One of the stranger subgenres of horror films to emerge recently is that involving sharks from outer space. Space Sharks is the latest addition, following Iron Sky and its sequel, Sky Sharks and Shark Side of the Moon, among others. Of none of them are nearly as good as the original The Outer Limits episode The Invisible Enemy, but that’s a whole different bucket of chum.
What concerns us now is the commercial spacecraft, The Clairvoyant, returning to Earth with a cargo of alien sea creatures and plant life. That includes what looks like a couple of small sharks with legs and feet. They have visions of generous research grants dancing in the heads of their scientific team. That consists of Dr. Johnson, Dr. Thompson and Dr. Hansen played by...

21 Savage’s third solo album, American Dream, begins with his mother, Heather Joseph, describing her family’s emigration from Britain to America during his childhood. “Every path that I walked was for my son,” she tells us. (Big Rube of Dungeon Family fame penned her introduction.) It’s a concept many others have used before, most famously by Jay-Z and his mother Gloria Carter on “December 4th” from 2003’s The Black Album.

The new Showtime limited series “Fellow Travelers” received rave reviews and is now being embraced by awards groups, with three bids at the Critics Choice Awards and a pair of nominations at the Golden Globes. This eight-part period piece is an adaptation of the 2007 book of the same name by Thomas Mallon. Centered on fictional characters Hawk Fuller (Matt Bomer) and Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), it tells an expansive love story inspired by the breakthroughs and setbacks American gay men experienced throughout the second half of the 20th century.
Stellar notices merited an impressive score of 95% at Rotten Tomatoes. Among the glowing reviews: Aramide Tinubu (Variety) calling it “complex, intimate, captivating and visually stunning” and Coleman Spilde (The Daily Beast) pointing out its capability to “revive the golden age of TV.”

Before the 2020s, film archivists' worst nightmares were digital degradation or the simple loss of film reels. Now, streaming services have created a new one for them: the purging of original movies and series without a physical release.
HBO Max has been a leading culprit, but Disney+ isn't blameless either. This is, after all, the same company that used to place its movies in the "Disney Vault" during the reign of physical media. It had previously been confirmed that the service would be removing 50 titles on May 26, 2023, including "Willow," "Big Shot," and "Y: The Last Man." However, it's been discovered that another title was unexpectedly included in the purge: "Marvel's Runaways," which is now no longer listed on Hulu or Disney+ (in the U.S. or internationally).
Nominally set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "Runaways" adapted the eponymous comic first created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Aphona. Both the...

Picture this: you're deep in the woods, alone save for your family, enjoying the silent majesty of a secluded night in nature while all manner of creatures great and small slumber peacefully around you. Most importantly, you're snug inside a yellow sleeping bag, looking for all the world like a giant banana.
Then, suddenly and without warning, a mutant killer bear emerges from the woods, its gaping maw looking like it's melting as it bellows an unholy roar and attacks. Trapped in your banana bag, you helplessly try to run away like you're in the world's worst potato sack race. It's all for nought, as the bear reaches out with one measly swipe of its paw, and you fly through the air only to hit a rock and shatter into a million feathery pieces.

The horror and sci-fi genres are home to some of the most memorable characters in cinematic history, and sometimes, they never have to show the actor's face. "The Last Starfighter" director Nick Castle became a horror legend when he first donned the white mask of Michael Myers in John Carpenter's "Halloween," and stuntman Kane Hodder became synonymous with Jason Voorhees after playing the hockey-mask wearing slasher in four "Friday the 13th" films. Chances are, if an actor is the first or most storied performer of an iconic monster, they are beloved by generations as new audiences are introduced to their work. This month saw the release of "Prey," with the prequel film becoming the seventh feature film in the "Predator" franchise. The film debuted 35 years after the debut installment, which took an action-packed approach to sci-fi horror and introduced one of the greatest creature characters in cinematic history.

Hello, dear readers! This week’s batch of horror and sci-fi home media releases has a lot of fun offerings, both new and old. Sarah has always been different. So as the newcomer at St. Benedict's Academy, she immediately falls in with high school outsiders. But there's something different about her new friends, and it's not just that they won't settle for being a group of powerless misfits.

Dig if you will, a picture: It’s the late ‘80s, and not everyone is fortunate to obtain cherished IPs, with the masks and the knifed gloves still keeping warm by the dying slasher embers. But not everyone needed it either; for instance, look at filmmaker Greydon Clark - the man was never averse to dipping into the zeitgeist and extracting whatever the hell he liked. In this case, he gave us Uninvited (1987), a fun and goopy *checks notes* killer cat on a yacht flick. I’m still unsure what glob of cultural goo Clark was grabbing for, but I’ve always appreciated his mud-pie approach, and this one ends up being a messy, grainy, blob of glorious nonsense.
Sort of like most of his oeuvre, come to think of it: A little seedy, but nothing too transgressive; perfect viewing for the whole demented family. Except like most of his films,...

If the truth is out there, you may be able to find it in the upcoming government report reveal on unexplained aerial phenomena. And you’ll definitely be able to find it on Discovery, Science Channel and Travel Channel.
The Discovery, Inc.-owned cable networks plan to simulcast a three-hour live event on Wednesday, June 30, exploring the report’s findings, TheWrap has learned. That is, if the highly anticipated report leaves anything unredacted.
Even if said report proves to be a dud, well, Josh Gates and the gang are going to have plenty to talk about anyway.
Gates, the face of Discovery’s “Expedition Unknown,” is set to host the live event. He’ll question top experts including NASA administrator Bill Nelson, former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, former counselor to President Obama John Podesta and retired senior intelligence officer Bob Wallace. There’s also astrophysicist Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi, physicist and astronomer Robert Weryk,...

In the 1810 Caspar David Friedrich painting “Abbey in the Oakwood,” a group of monks carries a coffin through the snow into the crumbling ruins of a gothic abbey. Beyond the abbey, a grove of bald, gnarled oak trees basks in the dim sunlight. Death lingers, but not its fresh stench, only the sense of its infinitude. I still think of this beautiful, desolate painting every time I listen to 21 Savage and Metro Boomin’s 2016 Savage Mode, arguably the greatest collaborative rapper-producer project of the last decade. 21 Savage and producer Metro Boomin will release Savage Mode 2, a sequel to their 2016 collaborative EP, on Friday, October 2nd via Epic Records.
The duo previewed the project at the album’s official site with a trailer featuring narration from Morgan Freeman.
Over macabre imagery and in-studio shots of the pair, the actor intones, “‘Savage’ is defined as ‘fierce, beastly and untamed.’ ‘Mode’ is defined as ‘a way of operating or using the system.’ So to be in ‘savage mode’ is to go hard, not allowing anything to stop or deter you from your mission.

Today’s noir forecast is vice, kidnapping, murder, suicide, narcotics and a sleazy stolen baby racket! Kino’s third volume of Universal-International pix contains two seldom-screened quality urban noirs. Expect genuine dark themes in these sizable-budget location noirs filmed before Universal pulled most production back onto its one-size-fits-all backlot sets. Barbara Stanwyck dominates one show, while noir stalwarts Richard Conte and Dennis O’Keefe anchor the other two dramas, with dynamic showings by Coleen Gray, Edith Barrett, Peggy Dow, Jeanette Nolan, Meg Randall and especially Gale Storm.

“Legacy” boasts a beat of gauzy synths that swirl around relentless trap drums, providing the perfect backdrop for Offset and Scott’s woozy, auto-tuned bars. In front of a wall of flashing lights, the pair delivered their verses – ad libs and all – with breathless ease, Offset spitting, “I’m from the bando, my daddy had abandoned me/Momma tried to cover up and bandage me/I’m the first one to lead the whole legacy.

More civilized monster movies just aren’t out there, although this one could have used a more creative title.

For me, the most interesting thing about horror maestro Tobe Hooper’s storied career is he takes chances. He always swings big; from his landmark second feature The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), to Lifeforce (1985), to even The Mangler (1995), he pushes the genre into the absurd through concept and execution, audiences be damned. It’s an admirable trait in a filmmaker, and one that’s on full display with Eaten Alive (1976), probably his most bizarre film to date. (Which is saying a lot.)
After a limited stateside release in October of ’76, EA was given a wide release in May of ’77 by Virgo International Pictures to theatres and drive-ins across the land. The start of the ever undulating arc of Hooper’s career, it was met with a resounding “Whaaaat?” by the public and critics alike. Sometimes in horror, a giant creature will do. It takes us back to a simpler time, I think. A time when an oversized spider, or a massive lizard sparked shuttered eyes at the Drive-In or local theatre. It feels almost like a cleansing; a reset of the scare-o-meter back to the innocent levels of the Saturday matinee. And if you were a kid in the ‘70s, Bert I. Gordon’s The Food of the Gods (1976) fit the bill nicely.
Released in June by Aip stateside, and then rolled out across the world in ’77, Food brought in $1 million at the gate (good revenue by Aip standards) and the reviews were, not surprisingly, as low grade as the budget. But hey, legendary schlockmeister Gordon did not survive the biz on good copy. And what kind of reviews would you expect from a movie that features giant chickens, gargantuan rats, and Marjoe Gortner?...

Director Greydon Clark is not a name thrown around a lot. Horror fans will know him (probably) for 1977’s Satan’s Cheerleaders. The rest of filmdom need not apply. However, his best film, Without Warning (1980), would end up resonating in such a way as to inspire Predator (1987), Schwarzenegger’s Alien in the Jungle box office smash. And when I say inspire, I mean they stole the concept. But what Without Warning lacks in testosterone and Hollywood bankrolls, it makes up in B movie charm and a winsome personality. You can’t help but fall in love with the damn thing.
Released by Filmways Pictures in New York, in September 1980, Without Warning (Aka It Came…Without Warning) had a scattered release – dribs and drabs in smaller markets, and don’t forget Finland (who could?). Made for a meager $150,000 Us the film was given a real dine and dash release, I’m...

It’s always bizarre when respectable actors pop up in less than respectable films. In the case of Without Warning, a gore-tastic alien invasion flick from 1980, those actors are Jack Palance and Martin Landau, both of whom eventually won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor for their roles in City Slicker and Ed Wood, respectively. Both men give totally committed and surprisingly good performances, elevating what is otherwise a solidly mediocre B-movie to something almost memorable.

Without Warning is another film being released to Blu-ray by Scream Factory that I’ve never seen, but it’s with good reason. The film has been largely unavailable on home video for the past 30 years. From what I understand, there was a VHS released in the UK, as well as a DVD that was mastered from the same source used to master the VHS, but never a legitimate DVD release, and no release at all in the states. The fact that this film is even being released at all is a miracle, much less that it is being given the Blu-ray treatment, with all-new extras. Without Warning has a lot going for it. It was shot by Dean Cundey, the monster/alien is played by Kevin Peter Hall, who was also Predator, as well as Harry in Harry and the Hendersons, and the film features Jack Palance and Martin Landau in superb character roles,...

Spotlight Titles:
Oculus (20th Century Fox, Blu-ray & DVD)
Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim’s innocence,...

Humankind’s collision with otherworldly life forms can make for unforgettable cinema.
This article will highlight the best of live-action human vs. alien films. The creatures may be from other planets or may be non-demonic entities from other dimensions.
Excluded from consideration were giant monster films as the diakaiju genre would make a great subject for separate articles.
Readers looking for “friendly alien” films such as The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), It Came from Outer Space (1953) and the comically overrated Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) are advised to keep watching the skies because they won’t find them here.
Film writing being the game of knowledge filtered through personal taste that it is, some readers’ subgenre favorites might not have made the list such as War of the Worlds (1953) and 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957).
Now let’s take a chronological look at the cinema’s best battles between Us and Them.

We are very thrilled to report that we are bringing Greydon Clark’s 1980 alien/slasher cult classic Without Warning to DVD & Blu-ray for the first time this August! This long-overdue release has been requested several times since we started the brand so we know many of you just jumped for joy. (We're jumping too!) What makes this even more exciting is that this title has never been released on Any home entertainment format in the U.S. or Canada (and is often bootlegged as some of you can attest to) so to be able to bring this out period is a feat in itself.

Black Sunday: Remastered Edition (1960) Lorber Films Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
One of director Mario Bava’s most acclaimed works, Black Sunday is a strikingly photographed “old dark castle” thriller revolving around witchcraft and possession. Barbara Steele (Piranha) gives a hypnotic performance as Katia, the unfortunate look-alike descendent of a witch who intends to possess her. This highly influential film, also shot by Bava, was the precursor to countless American and European gothic horrors. This is the uncut European print with a few extra minutes of footage, a different English track and Robert Nicolosi’s haunting original score. After years of ugly public domain releases, Black Sunday is finally being presented in its original aspect ratio with a high definition transfer struck from a pristine 35Mm archival print.
Special Features:
• Audio commentary by Tim Lucas (author of Mario Bava: All the Colors of the Dark).
• Original Bava theatrical trailers.

Grindhouse Trailer Classics Vol. 3
Introduced by Kim Newman | Produced by Marc Morris, Jake West
Nucleus Films follow up the critically acclaimed first two volumes in the Grindhouse Trailer Classics series with this all-new third volume, featuring even more outrageous and crazy trailers for movies from the heady days of cult and exploitation cinema, the likes of which have sadly been lost in this day and age of Hollywood blockbusters and high definition entertainment.
Throwing politically correctness out the window, the trailers in this third epic volume run the gamut from sexploitation movies (which seem to have an obsession with swinging Sweden and the activities which apparently go on there), biker movies, blackploitation classics – who doesn’t want to watch The Spook Who Sat By the Door?, martial arts masterpieces such as Deadly China Doll and Revenge of the Ninja, good old nazispolitation (Nazi Love Camp 27 I’m looking at you...
