"Fanny Osbourne" was the name of Robert Louis Stevenson's real life fiancée, who was so shocked by his original draft of "The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde" that Stevenson threw the manuscript into the fire and wrote a completely different story.
Inspired by Sir Henry at Rawlinson End (1980), director Borowczyk brought actor Patrick Magee and cinematographer Martin Bell onto this production. He found Bell's work too slow, however, and had him replaced after three days' shooting.
As an engagement gift, Dr Jekyll & Miss Osbourne are given a painting of "A Woman in Blue Reading a Letter" by Vermeer.
