Five years after Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) murdered six people at Camp Crystal Lake and was herself killed by Alice Hardy (Adrienne King) in self-defense, the camp has been condemned and closed to trespassers. Disregarding the rumors that Jason Voorhees is still alive and living on the land, Paul Holt (John Furey) opens Packanack Lodge, a counselor training camp next to 'Camp Blood'. The trainees begin arriving en masse, and the killings start all over again.

Friday the 13th, Part 2 is the second movie in the Friday the 13th series, preceded by Friday the 13th (1980) (1980) and followed by Friday the 13th: Part 3 (1982) (1982), Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) (1984), Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985) (1985), Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) (1986), Friday the 13th: The New Blood (1988) (1988), Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) (1989), Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) (1993), Jason X (2001) (2001), and Freddy vs. Jason (2003) (2003). The screenplay for Part 2 was written by Ron Kurz based on characters created by American screenwriter Victor Miller for the first movie. A novelization, titled Friday the 13th Part II: A Novel (1988) was written by American science fiction writer Simon Hawke.

There is no definitive answer (even from the writers -- besides that the filmmakers originally didn't have plans for sequels) but these are some theories: 1. He didn't drown at all but just pretended to and ran away to live in the woods due to being picked on by the other children at summer camp. This would mean that his appearance as a child at the end of the original film is just a hallucination by the traumatized survivor as he's a grown adult by the next chapter which is set a short time later. 2. Jason Goes to Hell (1993), the ninth installment, establishes a supernatural (demonic) explanation to explain the inconsistencies in the series.
