The film's story-line necessitated the creation of a Dinner Key Ferry, which the three heroes hijack. The art department complied, renting an old ferry, rigging it up, and building an entrance in the Dinner Key Marina, through which cars could pass. The entire operation was realistic-looking enough that a local newspaper sent a photographer down to shoot a story on the new ferry slated for service in Miami.

Gabe Kaplan was at the time known mostly from his role starring as schoolteacher Gabe Kotter in the hit television series Welcome Back, Kotter (1975), which also featured John Travolta.
