Anthony Montelli (Burt Young) moves his family—wife Dolores (Rutanya Alda), two sons Mark (Brent Katz) and Sonny (Jack Magner), and two daughters Patricia (Diane Franklin) and Jan (Erika Katz)—into the house of their dreams...a large lakefront home in Amityville on Long Island, New York. Not long after moving in, they are beset by strange events such as objects moving by themselves, faucets that run blood instead of water, banging on the front door, violent conflicts between family members, unseen voices, and a mysterious room/tunnel filled with flies, mud, and dripping water. When Sonny becomes demonically possessed, the voices tell him that he must kill his entire family.
Amityville II is based on the novel Murder in Amityville (1982) [ re-released under the title The Amityville Curse: Fact & Fiction (2007)] by Austrian-born parapsychologist Hans Holzer. It is a prequel to The Amityville Horror (1979) (1979) . The movie was followed by numerous sequels, including
Amityville 3-D (1983) (1983), Amityville Horror: The Evil Escapes (1989) (1989), The Amityville Curse (1990) (1990), Amityville 1992: It's About Time (1992) (1992), Amityville: A New Generation (1993) (1993), and Amityville Dollhouse (1996) (1996). Amityville: The Awakening (2017) is set for release in January 2014. The screenplay for Amityville II was written by American screenwriter Tommy Lee Wallace.
Yes. Although the names have been changed, the story is based on the 1974 murders of the DeFeo family in Amityville, Long Island, New York. The eldest son, 23-year-old Ronald "Butch" DeFeo, methodically shot his entire family, one by one, with a .35 caliber rifle. At his trial, Ronald pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and said he heard them plotting to kill him. He was found guilty on six counts of second-degree murder and is currently serving his sentence at the Green Haven Correctional Facility in Beekman, New York.
Yes. Sonny Montelli, using a rifle, shoots his entire family -- Anthony (inside his bedroom), Dolores (out in the hallway), Jan (in her bedroom), Mark (downstairs in the living room), and Patricia (downstairs on the stairway).
Denied permission from the church to perform an exorcism on Sonny, Father Adamsky (James Olson) decides to take matters into his own hands. He sneaks Sonny out of the prison and tries to take him into his church. When Sonny sees the crosses on the church doors, however, he panics and runs away. Adamsky follows him back to his house and begins to perform an exorcism. The demon refuses to reveal its name and, instead, takes on the form of Patricia, who taunts Adamsky sexually. It then turns back into Sonny and begins ripping apart Sonny's face. Horrified at what is happening to Sonny, Adamsky cries out, "Let it be me, my God...not him!" Suddenly, there is a clap of thunder, and the entire house is enclosed in a wall of flame. When it passes, Sonny is returned to his own self, the demon having left his body. Father Tom (Andrew Prine) arrives, and Adamsky orders him to take Sonny away. They go outside to the waiting police, and Sonny is taken away in a squad car. The camera pans back into the house and makes its way up the stairs to the bedroom where Adamsky lies slumped in a corner. His hand begins to throb, making it obvious that the demon is now inside of him. Adamsky calls out, "Lord of my life, do not forsake me!" The final scene is a shot of the house with a For Sale sign hanging outside.
The UK theatrical version was cut by one scene, in which Anthony gets shot by his possessed son Sonny. The following VHS releases by Thorn Emi, Warner and Castle contained the same cut. The DVD by Sanctuary Visual Ent. is completely uncut.
