The Movie Orgy. The title is a kind of ontological dare: can an assemblage of movies all lay on top of each other, swap positions, feel each other? Surely humans love, as they say, “to watch,” to raise voyeurism up as art. But when left to its own devices, does cinema also experience such base urges? Asked another way: when we say “the movie orgy,” don’t we mean “editing”? Disparate parts colliding with and enveloping one another, penetrating and being penetrated, and finally mutating after coming together? Cinema is transformed by—and transforms (us) through—the spaces between the images. A classier writer might cite Robert Bresson, speaking to Cahiers du cinéma at Cannes in 1957: “The cinema must express itself not with images, but with relationships between images, which is not at all the same thing.” A happy vulgarian—I betray that I am one, as I suspect Joe Dante,...

Robert Klane, screenwriter of films including “Weekend at Bernie’s” and “Where’s Poppa?,” died from kidney failure on Aug. 29 at his home in Woodland Hills, Calif. He was 81.
Klane’s son Jon shared the news with Variety in a statement, which reads, “Klane’s satirical and daring writing pushed the boundaries of good taste, while depicting the unfairness of life through themes of sex, family, madness and death.”

Over a drumroll reminiscent of a march or religious procession, the massive blue velvet curtains came falling down like a waterfall, and the stage at Madrid’s WiZink Center arena on Saturday turned into a dim lit club, complete with small tables, a bartender, a full orchestra and the evening’s master of ceremonies: the Spanish singer, rapper and songwriter C. Where to Watch “Painting with John”: HBO Max
I don’t envy the person who has to write the episode descriptions for “Painting with John.” It is true that “John recounts how the obsession he and his brother had for John Coltrane’s ‘Live at Birdland’ resulted in an unfortunate Sunday breakfast” is an accurate statement about the contents of the third episode. But a few words summarizing a couple distinct anecdotes from the life of John Lurie is a drop in the lake of things that give this show its value.
Whether you know Lurie as an actor or a musician or a painter, “Painting with John” almost works best if you’re unaware of his other work or can pretend he’s some mystical forest-bound sage dispensing ideas about the nature of creativity to anyone who’ll listen.
There’s no set format for the show.

It’s truly a measure of the pandemic that the 19th annual Ves Awards (to be held virtually on April 6) was dominated by Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” with 13 nominations (topped by photoreal episode). Like the Oscar shortlist, there was an absence of big budget, VFX-intensive studio films. But, truth be told, Season 2 of Jon Favreau’s engaging “Star Wars” bounty hunter series offered the industry’s most innovative tech (wrapped around Industrial Light & Magic’s improved StageCraft virtual production system).
Pixar’s “Soul” was the top animation contender with five nominations, while the feature competition was split between “Project Power,” the Netflix superhero film, Robert Zemeckis’ “The Witches” (which streamed on HBO Max), and Disney’s live-action “Mulan” (which streamed on Disney+), each garnering three nominations.

Oscar winner and multiple Emmy winner Cloris Leachman, best remembered as the delightfully neurotic Phyllis Lindstrom on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and her own subsequent sitcom, died of natural causes on Tuesday in Encinitas, Calif. She was 94.
“It’s been my privilege to work with Cloris Leachman, one of the most fearless actresses of our time,” her longtime manager Juliet Green said. “There was no one like Cloris. With a single look she had the ability to break your heart or make you laugh ’till the tears ran down your face. You never knew what Cloris was going to say or do and that unpredictable quality was part of her unparalleled magic.”
The daffy, self-absorbed Phyllis, a character she claimed was close to her own persona, brought the actress two Emmys as a featured actress in a series during the mid-’70s and made Leachman a household name.

The following contains spoilers for Lovecraft Country episode 8.
Lovecraft Country puts racism at the forefront of its storytelling. Anti-Blackness is as much a character as Leti and Tic. It manifests in many ways on the show, through the protagonists’ engagement with white characters and the systems they control. And through characters like Ruby, whose internalized racism sometimes puts them odds with their own. Anti-Blackness takes on a specific visual language in episode 8, “Jig-a-Bobo”, when Diana is chased by malevolent “pickaninnies”.
Diana runs away from the line to view the body of her deceased best friend, Emmet “Bobo” Till, which no one notices. She is left alone and unprotected by all of the adults in her life and is cursed by Captain Lancaster as a result. She’s beset upon by specters only she can see, they pursue her incessantly, and she can’t tell anyone about them. The ghouls takes the form of Topsy,...

In Lovecraft Country episode eight, "Jig-a-Bobo," Diana Freeman's finest moment is backed by the empowering words of activist Naomi Wadler. Still trying to process the death of Emmett Till, who in the series is her best friend, Bobo, Diana has a run-in with Captain Lancaster, who places a curse on her. Because of the curse, she's stalked by demonic versions of Topsy from Uncle Tom's Cabin that only she can see.
Diana spends most of the episode worried that they're going to kill her, but rather than give into Lancaster's demands, she spits in his face and decides she can get rid of them herself. It's at this moment of bravery that Wadler's words, which were originally advocating against gun violence, are heard loud and clear. "For far too long, these Black girls and women have been just numbers. I am here to say never again for those girls too.

Lovecraft Country Episode 8
Lovecraft Country has never shied away from depicting the brutal reality of the violence committed against Black people, and this episode is no different. However, instead of forcing the audience to experience the trauma of Emmett Till’s death through a visual of his mangled body, “Jig-a-Bobo” focuses on the emotional trauma stirred by his death. Till, known fondly as Bobo, is one of Diana’s best friends, and his murder comes on the heel of her father’s death, and her mother’s prolonged absence—though she has not been told that Hippolyta has disappeared.
Diana has been shielded from the truth about both of her parents, but that has left her exposed. When she runs away from Bobo’s viewing, alone, she’s accosted by Captain Lancaster who questions her, then puts a curse on her. She’s...

Jersey Boys is the behind-the-music story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. They were just four guys from Jersey, until they sang their very first note. They had a sound nobody had ever heard and the radio just couldn't get enough of. But while their harmonies were perfect on stage, off stage it was a very different story -- a story that has made them an international sensation all over again. The show features all their hits including Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, Oh What A Night, Walk Like A Man, Can't Take My Eyes Off You and Working My Way Back To You.

Many broken men populate Clint Eastwood’s knotty cinematic sandbox. An inciting action forces them to brazenly jump from normal life in search of revenge or salvation, burying themselves in self-righteousness and self-pity along the way. Still, despite this stubborn resolve their endgame often hinges on a homecoming of sorts, whether it’s written in blood or tears. By the end of 2014, Eastwood will have released two new films in very different genres that complicate this motif. Both Jersey Boys and American Sniper examine elite professionals whose work takes them on the road, away from the domestic confines of family and femininity to an isolated place where chaotic situations are common. But instead of doing everything in their power to return home, these men manipulate the classic “hero’s journey” as a selfish way to avoid the complex perspectives of those they’ve left behind or forgotten. Being on tour...

You can figure out everything you need to know about the big-screen version of the dazzling, Tony Award-winning musical Jersey Boys from the opening studio logos alone. A familiar piano cue from The Four Seasons’ catchy classic “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” plays over greying silver studio logos. In other words, you are going to get the electrifying pop staples but over a drab, lifeless execution. Director Clint Eastwood is no stranger to music, as he worked as a composer on many of his most recent films, but Jersey Boys is one musical adaptation that he should have left alone.

Bob Crewe, the writer-producer behind Frankie Valli‘s biggest hits, has died. He was 82. The cause of his death was undisclosed, but Crewe has been in poor condition and was unable to attend the film premiere of “Jersey Boys” in June. The producer, who inspired the role played by Mike Doyle in the Clint Eastwood-direct film version of the Broadway musical, helped co-write hits such as “Rag Doll,” “Sherry Baby,” “Walk Like a Man,” and “Can't Take My Eyes Off of You.” His other hits include Patti Labelle's “Lady Marmalade” and Mitch Ryder's “Devil with Blue Dress On.

Before The Beatles came to our shores in the mid-1960s, I don’t think there was a bigger rock band in America than The Four Seasons. The Four Seasons are one of the best-selling musical groups of all time, having sold an estimated 100 million records worldwide. The story of the band’s formation, success, and their eventual break-up has already been dramatized in Jersey Boys: The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, a jukebox musical which debuted on Broadway in 2005. And now that musical has been brought from the stage to the screen. The new movie Jersey Boys is a lot of fun and quite entertaining, but unfortunately the film suffers from narrative and structural issues that prevent it from reaching its full potential.
Obviously, the focus of the cast is on the four members of The Four Seasons – John Lloyd Young as frontman/lead vocalist Frankie Valli,...

It’s easy to see how Warner Bros. turned to their A-list director-producer Clint Eastwood, known for his calm, economic, unpretentious, methodical filmmaking, for the 60s period musical “Jersey Boys.” After directing 37 movies, he can do period in his sleep, from “Invictus” to “Changeling,”–on a budget. He’s a composer and jazz pianist who knows music (Cannes prize-winner “Bird”). “It’s just a lot of good songs,” he told Vanity Fair. “You go home humming a different one every night.” And he’s great with actors. The Tony-winning musical also had a good chance of being Oscar bait–likely to play well to the seniors in the Academy who have voted Eastwood movies many Oscars over the years, from “Mystic River” to Best Picture-winners “Unforgiven” and “Million Dollar Baby.”
But the movie looks bland and brown: while it may be accurate for the period, it’s not visually compelling.

American music history has had its fair share of notable moments. The 1950s and 1960s in particular, were an era in which catchy songs and talented performers reigned supreme. One such group was Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. These gifted young men were responsible for hit after hit including but not limited to “Sherry”, “Walk Like a Man”, and “Big Girls Don’t Cry”. A highly entertaining Tony Award-winning Broadway musical was created to detail the rise of The Four Seasons and it ran and continues to run, selling tickets to this day about a decade after its debut. It was only a matter of time until a big Hollywood film adaption would follow and it did. Helmed by veteran filmmaker Clint Eastwood, Jersey Boys is now in theaters and ready to transport you back to...

Jersey Boys, a recreation of the smash hit Broadway musical of the same name, recounts the rise to fame of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons during the late 50s and early 60s.
John Lloyd Young, who originated the role of Frankie Valli on Broadway, reprises the part on the big screen in Jersey Boys, dominating the vocals on the group’s timeless hits including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You.” Vincent Piazza, Erich Bergen and Micael Lomenda round out the Italian-American quartet that achieved international fame despite some trials and tribulations on the way from their Belleville, N.J. roots.

If Hollywood blockbusters are currently crippled by fear of the unknown, Broadway musicals – an ever-increasing number of them based on Hollywood blockbusters – are hardly less guilty. The jukebox musical is, if you will, the Great White Way's superhero reboot: their safest gambit, removing the greatest variable in a genre that has, after all, always been reliant on existing story material. Who needs composers when perfectly good popular discographies are there for the taking? “Jersey Boys” was a swift hit when it opened on Broadway in 2005; credit zesty staging or a tidily structured book if you will, but it's a show that owes its pull to one of the most buoyant American songbooks in Top 40 history. Those creamy harmonies, those tightly syncopated choruses, that unearthly falsetto: Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons hadn't the artistic reach of contemporaries like The Beatles, nor the cool strut of the Detroit acts to which...

Director Clint Eastwood takes a rare step into musical territory with this snappy adaptation of the stage smash charting the rise and fall of 60s pop sensations The Four Seasons. Original Broadway star John Lloyd Young reprises his role as lead singer Frankie Valli, with able backing from Michael Lomenda, Erich Bergen as songwriter Bob Gaudio, and Vincent Piazza as the group's reckless founder, Tommy DeVito. The dramatic ups and downs are accompanied by their greatest hits, including Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry and Walk Like A Man, while Christopher Walken lends godfatherly support as benevolent mob boss Gyp DeCarlo.

Clint Eastwood, 84, wasn't necessarily anyone's first thought when it came to a director for the film version of the Tony-winning 2005 Broadway hit "Jersey Boys." But the director's still on the A-list at Warner Bros. for his calm, economic, unpretentious, methodical filmmaking, flair for local color and good ear for music. Don't forget Cannes prize-winner "Bird"--Eastwood's a jazz pianist and composer. And he, like everyone else, couldn't resist the siren call of such pop hits as “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” and “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)." "It's just a lot of good songs," he told Vanity Fair. "You go home humming a different one every night." But it was a sign that the studio knew the 60s musical about Frankie Valli (the Broadway hit's John Lloyd Young) wasn't an awards contender when it opted not to wait for Oscar perennial Eastwood's customary year-end slot,...

Rick Santorum joins March for Marriage, Ryan Murphy honored as genius, Mark Hamill imagine conversation between Luke Skywalker and The Joker
It turns out that President Obama is a fan of The Normal Heart, so much so that he called up Ryan Murphy to congratulate him on the film and ask about the journey of getting it made. Murphy confirmed the call, “The whole movie is about Larry trying to get the attention of Washington and 30 years later, to get a call from the President is a full-circle moment.”
The situation in Wisconsin is more complicated that originally reported. Washington (AP) — That trademark falsetto behind "Sherry," ''Big Girls Don't Cry" and other hits from 50 years ago will help celebrate July 4 on the National Mall this year as Frankie Valli headlines the "Capitol Fourth" show in Washington. Organizers on Monday were to announce their early plans for the show and fireworks, which draw hundreds of thousands of people to the National Mall each year. The event will be broadcast nationwide on PBS. Valli's voice propelled the success of The Four Seasons from their first national exposure in 1962 when they performed "Sherry" on TV's "American Bandstand." Some of their other hits include "Walk Like a Man," ''December 1963 (Oh What a Night)" and his solo hit "Grease." The group has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now that familiar voice just turned 80 years old this month, and Valli is still touring. Looking back on decades in music,...

The first trailer for Clint Eastwood's version of the hit Broadway show suggests a shimmying tale of loyalty, friendship and light-hearted gangster cliché, says Henry Barnes
Jersey Boys, Clint Eastwood's biopic of 60s pop sensations The Four Seasons, adjusts its quiff, clears its throat and gets set to wail. The film, an adaptation of the hit Broadway show of the same name, follows The Four Seasons (those under 50: think One Direction with a mob connection and fewer perfumes) from their New Jersey roots to pop super-stardom.
The Four Seasons were famed for their tightly-drilled performances of hits like Big Girls Don't Cry and Walk Like a Man. But their slick veneer hid a tough back story. In the early days the group rubbed shoulders with the mob, sometimes robbing grocery stores to fund their music and often playing venues run by the Mafia.
