After watching Danish director Miki Mistrati’s “The Chocolate War,” which is having its world premiere at Cph:dox this week, chances are you will think twice before buying your next chocolate bar.
That’s what happened to Mistrati back in the early 2000s when he went shopping in his local supermarket. Spoilt for choice, he looked at all the different bars of chocolate and only found one out of seven that bore the Fair Trade mark. “So I began to wonder: if one is Fair Trade, what about the other six chocolate bars?,” he says.
That marked the start of his journey to investigate child slavery in the cocoa plantations of Ivory Coast and Ghana, the two biggest cocoa producers in the world. It started with “The Dark Side of Chocolate” released in 2009 and was followed by “Shady Chocolate” in 2012. “The Chocolate War” is the third installment.

One Thing I Love Today is a daily column dedicated to putting a spotlight on some pop culture item worth your attention. After all, there's enough snark out there. Why not start every day with one quick shotgun blast of positivity? Noah Hawley is a True Believer. There is no reason whatsoever that a television show based on Fargo should work, but after finishing season two of the FX series, I am blown away by what he's accomplished and by the sheer force of his love for Joel and Ethan Coen. Homage and inspiration are similar, but not the exact same things. Homage is fine, but I think you can only go so far with it. Inspiration, though, is something else. Real inspiration is a springboard to something new, something that is genuinely yours. One person looks at something and sees and processes it a certain way, and someone else...

Scream Factory brings late 80’s horror thriller I, Madman to Blu-ray, one of two notable cult classics from Hungarian/Canadian director Tibor Tabaks. Beginning in Canadian television, Tabaks reached notoriety with his 1987 sophomore feature, The Gate, a bizarre creature feature which terrorized children with its forced perspective monsters and introduced the world to child actor Stephen Dorff. He’d follow that up with this pulpy adaptation of a screenplay by David Chaskin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge). A gothic murder mystery plays out in the eternally uneasy streets of a hazy, 1989 Hollywood in this simple yet strange forgotten oddity.

A few weeks ago, my 9-year-old son asked if he could start watching the news in the morning.
Partly, this was a scam. He’s not typically allowed to watch TV during the school week, except for the evening news and sports, and so this was his way of getting some more screen time. When the TV is off he’s more likely to read, so I’d rather keep the tube off.

Los Angeles, California (X17online) - The American Library Association has added the Twilight series to the annual report of "challenged books." The vampire novels created by Stephanie Meyer rank #5 on this list that already includes J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books. The "challenged books" list is compilation of books that are the most complained about by parents and educators. The Ala defines a challenge as a "formal, written complaint filed with a library or school requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness." Twilight books have been criticized for their sexual content, as well as teen romance and violence. Barbara Jones, director of the association's Office for Intellectual Freedom, had this to say: "Vampire novels have been a target for years and the ‘Twilight’ books are so immensely popular that a lot of the concerns people have had about vampires are focused on her books." Other books...
