With Christmas just one week (and one day) away, we wanted to ask you, the people, what your favorite Christmas Movie is? It doesn’t have to be the movie you think is the best, just the one that you eagerly anticipate watching every year. Is it the timeless tale of an angel getting its wings in It’s A Wonderful Life? or perhaps the under-appreciated (and genuinely hilarious) R rated The Night Before is how you kick off your holiday season?
Do you look forward to seeing Jack Skellington discover the true meaning of Christmas in the Christmas Movie Classic The Nightmare Before Christmas or watching Kevin McCallister take down the Wet/ Sticky Bandits in Home Alone 1&2 or perhaps seeing Clark W. Griswold struggle to have the perfect family Christmas in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is more your speed? Whatever film fills you with yuletide glee, we would love...

The creation of Ernest P. Worrell, played by actor/comedian Jim Varney, was novel for an advertising-saturated age. The idea was that the character's creators -- John R. Cherry III, his business partner Jerry Carden, and Varney -- would farm out their pre-made mascot to whatever product or service that might want him, and Ernest would hawk their wares. He wasn't invented for any one particular business. He was invented to be a pitchman-for-hire, and the Ernest ads all followed a similar format, making the commercial spots low-budget and instantly universal. Ernest was hired by the Coca-Cola Company to sell Sprite, but would also appear in ads for local businesses like the Cerrito Auto Square. Ernest was very, very popular.
Eventually, the Ernest ads became so huge and ubiquitous that the character began to bleed over into feature films and TV shows. Ernest was a media personality writ large, living...

After hurrying his grandkids off to bed, an elderly man puts the finishing touches on his Christmas Eve presentation. He bounces around the tree, bubbling over with the Christmas spirit until a rustling outside his door causes him to pause. Could that noise be Santa Claus himself? Just as the grandfather allows himself to believe the impossible, a grotesque creature bursts through the door, leading with his extended claws. The grandfather wastes no time, training a pistol on the invader and sneering, “Die, you son of a…”
Unable to say the curse word, the actor playing the grandfather calls cut and the actors reset. Roku reached 51.2 million active accounts by the end of a streaming-besotted 2020, rising from 36.9 million by the end of 2019 and 13.4 million in 2016.
Describing the global numbers as “preliminary estimated data,” the tech firm said it facilitated 17 billion streaming hours in the fourth quarter and 58.7 billion hours in 2020. Those levels represent a 55% year-over-year surge for both the quarter and the full year.
Last November, Roku reported having 46 million active accounts at the end of the third quarter. The company has risen to become, along with Amazon, the major gatekeeper of streaming in the U.S. Amazon said last month it had reached 50 million active users on its Fire TV streaming platform.
The coronavirus pandemic has accelerated an already pronounced consumer shift toward streaming. Several major new services also hit the market in 2020, including HBO Max and Peacock, with Disney+ and Apple TV+ also expanding after launching late in 2019. As the embodiment of kindness, generosity, and Yuletide beneficence, Santa Claus presents some mighty big black boots, much less a red suit, for any actor to fill. But jolly old Saint Nicholas has appeared in the movies for as long as the movies have existed, and here are some of our favorite actors who’ve steered the sleigh (not counting Billy Bob Thornton and anyone else who has played a guy who is pretending to be Santa):
Kurt Russell in “The Christmas Chronicles” (2018) and “The Christmas Chronicles 2” (2020): There’s more than a little bit of Russell’s trucker character from “Big Trouble in Little China” in his take on Father Christmas, but that blue-collar bravado and dad-bod energy make this character, in the words of critic Nathan Rabin, “a Santa who f–ks.”
Jim Broadbent, “Arthur Christmas” (2011): In this delightful animated adventure from Aardman, Broadbent plays...

Who rocks the best bowl-full-of-jelly belly in movie history? Father Christmas has shown up in enough movies that he has his own subgenre: the Santa Claus movie, a whole category of family friendly fantasy films dedicated to exploring the magic of St. Nick.
Here are some of the most memorable movie portrayals of Santa Claus.
1. Edmund Gwenn in Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
The gold standard for cinematic Santa Clauses, Gwenn plays Kris Kringle, a department store Santa who insists he’s the real thing. Gwenn’s performance as Kringle was so convincing that he won the Oscar for Best Supporting...

Six new releases are now vying for attention in the marketplace for Christmas. It was down to five, but now that Sony has authorized a last-minute limited release for The Interview, area theaters are absolutely packed with options. In terms of holiday titles, quite a few specialty screenings that were scheduled for Alamo Drafthouse Ritz have been scrapped because they added The Interview to Theater 1, but you can catch free daily Kid's Club screenings of Muppet Christmas Carol at the Alamo Slaughter Lane, Ernest Saves Christmas at South Lamar and Arthur Christmas (2D) at Alamo Lakeline each morning through New Year's Eve.
Aside from that, there aren't many rep screenings happening until the new year. The Ritz will still be offering Monday night's "Homo Arigato!" screening of Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell, an award-winning 2008 documentary about the queer musician and are hosting their annual New Year's Eve feast...

Madea Simmons and Ernest P. Worrell have a lot in common. They both come from the South. They both have goofy catchphrases (Hellur and Knowwhatimean?), and they both have a string of films all bearing their name. With this holiday's release of A Madea Christmas, they now both have Christmas movies in common, too. Tyler Perry's probably not the kind of guy who accepts tips from 25-year-old comedies about goofy rednecks, but hopefully he makes an exception in this particular case because Ernest Saves Christmas is awesome (well, it's pretty good, anyway).

After blogging about my favourite Halloween movies this past October, I thought I’d impart my nerdy wisdom upon you for the holiday season and give you a rundown of just what movies I’ll be watching this Christmas. After all it wouldn’t be Christmas without the family sat round the TV watching a movie whilst the festive feast cooks in the oven (of course not everyone gets to watch the movie – someone has to cook)
For me Christmas movies are split into two categories: Christmas Mainstays and Christmas Madness. Mainstays are those films that you always watch during the festive season, those movies that are constantly shown on TV during the holiday. And then there’s what I call Christmas Madness – these are the movies that only the seasoned holiday movie veterans choose to watch at this time of year. Beware you have to be strong-willed (and strong-stomached...

It’s not even Thanksgiving yet and we’re already devoting a second Scenes We Love list to a Christmas movie. Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of Scrooged, so how could we not? Did you know this modernization of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol had the fourth best opening of 1988? And of those four, it debuted in a significantly fewer amount of theaters, giving it the second-best per-screen average among them. It also opened on a Wednesday, like three of those films, and of those three it had the second-best five-day opening. People clearly loved this movie, right? Not quite, but they really wanted to see it. Unfortunately, it didn’t stay at or near the top for very long. By the big holiday weekend, it was in 9th place, behind stuff like Tequila Sunrise, The Naked Gun and Oliver and Company. But at least it was doing better than Ernest Saves Christmas. Scrooged...

Wait, Crop Tops on dudes were cool?
Apparently some people thought so. It really wasn’t out of the ordinary to catch a guy sporting a belly shirt in an ’80s movie, especially if said movie had a workout scene or some type of nod to sports. Shawn ‘Liberal Dead’ Savage pitched this idea to me a few weeks back, and we started tossing names back and forth to each other. Some of the memories were clouded, though. We’d throw a couple of titles into the field, only to search it out and discover that we were wrong as shit. But we got some heavy hitters, for sure. I always found half shirts to be pretty damn sexy on a lady. On a dude, it just looks kinda weird. However, 9 times out of 10, the man with enough nerve to wear one was either a hottie or at least popular.

“Why do I always think gettin’ you home for Life Day is gonna be easy?”
So says a languid Han Solo to an excitable Chewbacca in the legendarily awful 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special. Perhaps the most infamous Television Christmas Special ever made, The Star Wars Holiday Special is a mythic assault on fanboy watchability. There are shows that are so good they’re bad, the kind of outing where laughable moments and poor production add an air of ironic, even classic credibility. Then there’s The Star Wars Holiday Special. So bad its good just doesn’t apply here. This two-hour spinoff is utterly unwatchable save for a brief section of animation wedged between the overcooked buns of this whopper of a fail.
While the idea of a Star Wars Christmas special may have sounded good on paper, this Lucasfilm misstep left a blemish on Star Wars even greater than Jar Jar.

Just when you thought that everything from the '80s and '90s had already been rebooted and rehashed a few hundred times over by now, along comes someone to remind us that there's still at least one more property that has yet to be tapped. Believe it or not, former TV commercial personality turned movie star Ernest P. Worrell is headed back to the big screen... knowhutImean, Vern? Original creator John Cherry is bringing back the classic character that he created in the mid-'80s and then essentially ran into the ground until the death of star Jim Varney in 2000. The new movie is called Son of Ernest and will obviously star a different actor donning the denim vest. Hey, what could possibly go wrong? According to Variety, production company Ruckusfilm is bringing back Ernest with the help of screenwriter Dan Ewen, who recently wrote a potential upcoming Farrelly Brothers movie called Dear Satan.

Do you remember the Ernest movies? If not, you likely weren't a child of the Eighties. I have vivid memories of watching Ernest Goes To Camp, Ernest Saves Christmas, Ernest Goes To Jail, and even Ernest Scared Stupid. These are not Oscar movies in any way, but they are stupid fun, especially for the kid in you. Ernest P. So, it looks like there's going to be another Ernest movie. Yes, that Ernest. The one from Ernest Goes to Camp, Ernest Saves Christmas, Ernest Goes to Jail, Ernest Scared Stupid, Ernest Rides Again, and a handful of direct-to-video releases. "Didn't Jim Varney, the man who played Ernest, die?" you are perhaps wondering. Yes, he did die, in 2000. That's why this new movie is Son of Ernest, which, according to Variety, will focus on the character's long-lost offspring. Just to be really clear, people are making a new Ernest movie.

Every year around this time, we start to settle into some of our well-established family and/or personal traditions and if you're a film fan, odds are your holiday traditions involve watching a favourite flick or two. Inevitably, the discussion around the blogosphere gravitates toward singling out some of the best Christmas movies of all time, but a topic that isn't often addressed is the exact opposite: the worst Christmas movies of all time. And let's face it, there have been plenty of stinkers over the years trying desperately to carve out a piece of that holiday pie. This year Fandango decided to hold a poll on that very subject, and the results were interesting, although probably not that surprising. The 1964 cult classic Santa Claus Conquers the Martians ended up on top with 23% of the votes, while the Hulk Hogan turd Santa with Muscles also figured highly in the voting.

There's no shortage of Christmas movies to choose from this time of year. In this case, quantity doesn't necessarily equal quality. While classically bad Christmas movies like Santa Buddies, Santa's Slay and the 2006 remake of Black Christmas didn't make the cut, we present the top ten worst Christmas movies that did, courtesy of a poll co-sponsored by WENN. Take a look and let us know if you agree. Which Christmas movies would you add to the list? 1. Santa Claus Conquers The Martians 23% 2. Silent Night, Deadly Night 16% 3. Jingle All The Way 10% 4. Jack Frost 9% 5. Santa With Muscles 5% 6. Ernest Saves Christmas 5% 7. Home Alone 3 4% 8. Deck The Halls 4% 9. Surviving Christmas 3% 10. Christmas With The Kranks...

Santa Claus Conquers The Martians Tops Worst Christmas Movie Poll
Festive flop Santa Claus Conquers The Martians has topped a new poll to find the worst Christmas movie ever made.
Movie website Fandango.com teamed up with WENN to find the ultimate holiday turkey and the 1964 Nicholas Webster film was the clear 'winner'.
In fact the film, which picked up 23 per cent of the total vote, was always out in front - ahead of Christmas non-crackers like Silent Night, Deadly Night and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Jingle All The Way.
The poll launched on 1 December and more than 3,000 film fans voted. Here are the results:
1. Santa Claus Conquers The Martians
2. Silent Night, Deadly Night
3. Jingle All The Way
4. Jack Frost
5. Santa With Muscles
6. Ernest Saves Christmas
7. Home Alone 3
8. Deck The Halls
9. Surviving Christmas
10. Christmas With The Kranks.

One thing I learned while writing my holiday film guide “Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas” is that there are two kinds of plots in this sub-genre with a tendency to stink on ice: movies about Santa, and anything where somebody has to save Christmas. (“Miracle on 34th Street,” "Elf" and “Ernest Saves Christmas” among the exceptions, obviously.) The fact that “Arthur Christmas” delights, despite being both a Santa story and a somebody-saves-Christmas adventure, would be reason enough for celebration, but that’s putting too fine a point on it. The funny, exciting,...

Subject: Saint Nicholas, 1700-year old Greek Christian bishop turned secular symbol of capitalistic holiday cheer
Date of Assessment: December 24, 2010
Positive Buzzwords: Gifts, cookies, mythos
Negative Buzzwords: Typecasting, played-out
The Case: While I initially intended upon gearing this assessment as a superfluous examination of Santa Claus as a free-standing, make-believe (sorry, Rowles) entity, the final result would have merely contained a dull declaration of my own childhood experience. Perhaps your story is an interesting one; if so, please feel free to comment to that effect. However, let's just temporarily switch focus and discuss the jolly red man as a movie character, who (more often than not) is one hell of an existential bastard. In addition, Santa's also quite the people pleaser, despite enduring a few decades' worth of humiliation at being played by the likes of Hulk Hogan (Santa With Muscles) and Tim Allen (The Santa Clause; The Santa Clause 2...

The Fine Brothers, an internet comedy duo that speaks fast and spoils movies, is back to spit in your eggnog this holiday season with “50 Christmas Spoilers in 3 Minutes.”
Faster than you can go a-wasailling, Benny and Rafi Fine spoil every Christmas movie you’ve ever heard of — and some that you haven’t. As with all Fine Brothers YouTube videos, there are two types of viewers.
The first love the spitfire, spoiler-soaked, saccharin snark and wish the yucksters plenty of presents under the Christmas tree. Or menorah. The other, perhaps the Grinches of the group, want to stuff the boys’ faces with figgy pudding to dam the endless patter of plot-ruining banter.
Where do you fall on the Fines? While you chew that over, here’s a list of all 50 Christmas films:
A Christmas Carol, Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (1951), A Christmas Carol (2009), The Muppet Christmas Carol, Mickey’s Christmas Carol,...

Last year we looked at 10 Christmas movie greats (It’s A Wonderful Life, White Christmas, Die Hard), now let’s explore the flip-side.
The formula for a joyful Christmas movie is pretty simple – sentiment, comedy, Christmas cheer. So why are there so many Christmas turkeys? It’s our own fault, at this time of year we become less discerning about what we’ll pay to see, out of a desire to watch something Christmassy. So studios just pump out any old crap with ‘Christmas’ or ‘Santa’ in the title, knowing they’re guaranteed to make a quick buck. Last year’s Four Christmases, say, made a nice cash sum at the box office despite being universally panned.
So while there is an abundance of choice, here are the Top 10 Worst Christmas Movies.

Who put Danny De Vito in a Christmas movie and didn’t cast him as an elf?...
