The real-life Albert Wimschneider appears in this movie, portraying his uncle, who happens to have the same name. The role is credited as "Uncle Albert".
The title refers to a special soup made of fermented milk, the recipe of which is told at the end of the movie. In the German version this is an outtake of a conversation with writer Anna Wimschneider herself.
Director Joseph Vilsmaier called this movie "a new kind of Heimatfilm (homeland movie)" since he tried not to show the peaceful and cliche world of the farmers but more concentrate on the realistic tragedy, showing the hard work and the unpleasant problems the people had.

Werner Stocker and Dana Vávrová were called the dream couple of the end-1980s until the early 1990s. They later also starred in Rama Dama (1991), another movie by Joseph Vilsmaier, which also deals with lonely women during WW2.
