Rajkumar Santoshi On Movie Failure (Photo Credit – Wikipedia/Prime Video)
Salman Khan and Aamir Khan’s comedy-drama Andaz Apna Apna (1994), directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, was unfortunately a box-office setback. The film didn’t have a good theatrical run and was shunned by the audience.
However, it turned out to be a massive success when it came out on cassettes and television. Over the years, the film has attained a cult status. While some say that the movie was ahead of its time, some call it the right movie at the wrong time.
According to Rajkumar Santoshi, Andaz Apna Apna failed not because of the story or the star cast but because the makers could not advertise it properly. In a recent interview with Doordarshan, Santoshi said that the publicity for the movie wasn’t done well, and people didn’t know it was a comedy.

‘Bhed Chaal’ is a Hindi proverb very much used in relation to the Hindi film industry. It means that one huge success is followed by numerous other attempts. Original ideas are at a premium in the Hindi film industry. The makers either depend on a foreign film, or a novel, or a South Indian film for a subject.
Filmmakers always want to play safe because the risk factor is always high. The distributor, while being wined and dined, gets a sales pitch, like “Zanjeer se kam nahi hamari picture…” and such. Many smaller-budget imitations of ‘Sholay’, ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Deewaar’ and other such films flooded the market. That is to say, if one action film worked, many more were certain to follow.
With the introduction of the video format followed by CDs, the trend changed to copying Hollywood films. A star was sent two videos or discs to watch, and they were...

Love Aaj Kal
Starring Kartik Aryan, Sara Ali Khan, Arushi Sharma
Written & Directed by Imtiaz Ali
The post-intermission section of Imtiaz Ali’s confounding “love” story opens with what looks a video of a cheesy rapper exhorting the persuasions of that bewildering emotion called love, the same one that Kartik Aaryan in a semi-sepia flashback is heard telling his friends feels like someone strangling him in his sleep.
That’s how we often feel while watching Imtiaz Ali’s antidotal love story. Consciously or otherwise Ali denudes the feeling of love of all romance, makes it look like a train hurtling torrentially into the land of trauma . So fasten you seatbelts, for a ride into the choppy waters of a love relationship, with Kartik Aryan playing the cross-generation double loverboy with all the earnestness of Charlie Brown sneaking midnight treats for Snoopy.
Honestly, there is no way of telling the two Kartiks apart.

The world of Bollywood and the works of Shakespeare have an igniting connection. Oozing with Othello’s jealousy and a love affair gone sourly pear-shaped, we have Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara (2006).
Then there’s the obvious Romeo and Juliet. The star-crossed lovers are a favourite pair amongst Bollywood. The tragedy has churned out flicks such as Bobby (1973), Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) and the more recent Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela (2013).
The surefire combination of Bollywood and Shakespeare now comes through The Merchant of Vembley, a stage play set in London’s North Wembley and perfomed at The Cockpit, London.
If you have never been to Wembley (or even if you have), close your eyes and picture delicious samosa’s selling in the high street. Then visualise every Asian aunty and uncle on the street and of course, that Indian shop that sells 50 different types of achaar (pickle).
Yes, we are in Wembley!

2013, the extra special year marking the centenary of Hindi Cinema is almost coming at an end.
To celebrate, BollySpice briefly explores the theatrical roots of Bollywood, expanding on the contribution of William Shakespeare, the famous playwright who has continuously intrigued the Indian film industry since the beginning of the Hindi film industry.
We explore selected Bollywood “Romeo and Juliet” interpretations and how they disturbingly reflect South Asian cultural issues related to “love”.
Theatrical Beginnings
When “sound” arrived into the world of Hindi cinema in 1931, it threatened the existence of the Parsi Theatre – a popular culture of performing arts that formed the foundation for what we now call “Bollywood”.
Not only had theatre formed an important foundation, but continues to be reflected through Bollywood – through more ways than one.
Popular Parsi theatrical productions were made into Hindi films. Famous theatre playwrights, as well as singing-dancing theatre performers joined the film industry; dramatical,...

One of William Shakespeare’s most inspired works, Romeo and Juliet is possibly Cinema’s most intrigued subject. Bollywood soon followed with multiple versions from time to time. From Qayamat se Qayamat Tak to Ishqzaade lately and the very forgetful Issaq, the versions have maintained the common thread, each further altered per director’s vision. It’s interesting what someone once said – that Indian audiences like their movies to end with the happily ever after. That possibly explains why films on lovers’ sacrifices haven’t really worked magic at the box office. That did not deter filmmakers to pursue their continued obsession of the theme, the latest being Sanjay Leela Bhansali, whose film Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela releases in theatres this week. Can Slb take this simple charm of the film, maintain the core soul, yet reinvent it to a distinguished feel and appealing watch?
